  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of two lighting programs (continuous lighting (CL) 24L:0D and intermittent lighting (IL) 1L:3D) on the broiler performance, carcass traits, incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), relative asymmetry (RA), duration of induced tonic immobility (TI), heterophils-lymphocytes ratio (H/L), serum glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The chicks were randomly divided into 2 treatment groups consisting of 100 chicks per treatment, continuous lighting (CL) 24L:0D or intermittent lighting (IL) 1L:3D. Each treatment consists of 5 replicates of 20 chicks. The experimental period was 6 weeks. Use of IL decreased feed to gain ratio, improved immune response and reduced fearful. Body weight, carcass traits, TD and stress parameters (organ weights, RA, H/L, glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels) were not significant in different lighting groups. As a result IL was beneficial for producers and chickens than CL.

  • Objective: An experiment was conducted to investigate the continuous and intermittent lighting program effects on terms of the productive performance, carcass traits, blood biochemical parameters, innate immune and oxidative status in broiler chicks. Methods: A total of 600 Cobb-500 one day old chicks were randomly allocated into six equal groups (100 chicks per treated group with five replicates of 20 chicks each) based on lighting program; 22 continuous lighting (22 C), 11 h lighting+1 darkness twice daily (11 L/1 D), 20 h continuous lighting (20 C), 5 h lighting+1 darkness four times daily (5 L/1 D), 18 h continuous lighting (18 C) and the final group subjected for 3 h lighting+1 h darkness six times daily (3 L/1 D). The experimental period lasted 42 days. Results: Compared with those under the intermittent light program, broiler chicks exposed to continuous lighting for 22 h had significant improvement in live body weight and carcass (dressing and breast percentage) measured traits. Though reducing lighting hours significantly reduced feed intake and feed conversion ratio values. Different lighting programs revealed no significant effect on all blood biochemical parameters. Oxidative stress and innate immunity parameters significantly enhance by reducing lighting hours (3L/1D). Conclusion: The findings suggest that reducing lighting hours up to 3L/1D would be more useful in enhancing feed efficiency, innate immunity, and oxidative status compared with continuous lighting programs on broilers.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of light qualities and lighting types provided by LED Chamber System which designed by Rural Development Administration on growth and development of Chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum L., cv. 'Cheonsu') plantlet cultured in vitro. The explants of single-node cuttings were exposed to monochromic or mixture radiation of blue, red, or green under continuous and intermittent lighting for 42 days. The intermittent lighting of 20 sec. on and off per minute significantly stimulated shoot elongation with lower number of internodes compared with continuous lighting treatments. However, continuous blue, red, or green light gave greater dry weight comparing the intermittent lighting, and the lowest weight was recorded at the continuous fluorescent lamp. Otherwise, the plantlet growth in dry weight or leaf area was inhibited by the green light controlled at 50 times intermittence but internode elongation was significantly increased. These results showed that the plantlets were successfully grown under the LED Chamber System controlled with different light qualities and lighting types. Quantitative growth of the plantlets was improved under the shorter photoperiod with a intermittent lighting cycle compared with continuous lighting using fluorescent lamps. It is concluded that the growth and development of in vitro plantlets such as single-node cuttings can be achieved by the controlling of light quality or lighting type during the photoperiod per day with a lower electric cost compared with conventional continuous lighting system.

  • Four treatments were conducted to determine the effects of lighting regimes on the body weight gain and feed conversion of broiler chicks during 7 weeks: 1) 24 hours consistant lighting regime, 2) intermittent lighting regime of 1 hour lighting and 3 hours dark, 3) 20 hours lighting and 4 hours dark regime, 4) natural lighting regime. Each treatment was composed of three replications and 180 broiler male chicks were used in this experiment (45 chicks for each treatment,15 chicks for each replication). The results of this experiment were summarized as follows; 1. The body weight gains of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime were heavier than those of any other treatments during whole period, but no significant differences were found. In 1-4 weeks, the body weight gains of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark regime were much heavier than those of natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lighting regime, but in 5-7 weeks, no differences were found among the 4 treatments. 2. The feed conversions of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime were improved more than those of any other treatments during whole period, but no significant differences were found. In 1-4 weeks, the feed conversions of 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark regime and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark regime were much more improved than those of natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lightine regime, but in 5-7 weeks, no differences were found among the 4 treatments. 3. These results indicated that the intermittent lighting regimes such as 1 hour lighting+3 hours dark and 20 hours lighting+4 hours dark are more efficient on the body weight gain and feed conversion of broiler chicks than natural lighting regime and 24 hours consistant lighting regime.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lighting schedule and nutrient density on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of broiler chickens. A total of 576 day old Arbor Acre male chickens was used with a $4{\times}2$ factorial arrangement. The four lighting schedules were continuous (23 L:1 D, CL), 20 L:4 D (12 L:2 D:8 L:2 D), 16 L:8 D (12 L:3 D:2 L:3 D: 2 L:2 D) and 12 L:12 D (9 L:3 D:1 L:3 D:1 L:3 D:1 L:3 D) and provided by incandescent bulbs. The two nutrient densities were high (H, starter diet: 13.39 MJ/kg apparent metabolisable energy (AME), 23.00% crude protein (CP); finisher diet: 13.39 MJ AME/kg, 19.70% CP) and low energy and protein level (L, starter diet: 12.03 MJ AME/kg, 20.80% CP; finisher diet: 12.14 MJ AME/kg, 18.30% CP). Houses with dark curtains and solid sidewalls were used. Chickens were randomly allocated to the 8 treatments with each treatment comprising 6 replicates of 12 chickens. Feed and water were available ad libitum. Lighting schedules showed no difference (p>0.05) in growth performance at the end of the experiment. 12 L:12 D significantly reduced (p<0.05) the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to 23 L:1 D treatment. Intermittent lighting (IL) schedules produced higher protein content (p<0.001) in breast meat. Birds on high density diets had higher body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) (p<0.001), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p<0.001) throughout the experiment with the exception of 36 to 42 d. High nutrient density increased (p<0.05) abdominal fat, decreased (p<0.05) the moisture loss of meat, and reduced percentage of wings and legs. There was a significant lighting schedule${\times}$diet interaction (p<0.001) on FCR for days 8 to 14 and 15 to 21. Results indicated that IL can give similar growth performance in comparison with CL, meanwhile with positive effects on meat quality by increasing protein content and decreasing the concentration of MDA. High nutrient density resulted in greater growth performance.

  • We have studied the mycelia growth of four soil-borne fungal pathogens under light qualities and two lighting types (continuous and intermittent) provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). As a result, each mycelia growth on Phytophthora cactorum KACC40166, Athelia rolfsii KACC40170, and Helicobasidium mompa KACC40836 strain showed the similar growth rates within 10% or less difference among treatments compared to dark control, regardless of lighting types. However, the mycelia growth on Rosellinia necatrix KACC40168 strain was significantly suppressed by blue, blue+green and blue+red LED as well as fluorescent lamp compared to a dark control, in common with lighting types. The melanin pigment on R. necatrix KACC40168 strain showed relatively to induce more strongly under green LED and fluorescent lamp, whereas no induction under red LED and a control, regardless of lighting types. Thus, the hypha width on R. necatrix KACC40168 was significantly thinned by blue and blue+green LED compared to a control, in common with lighting types.

  • Effects of different photoperiod regimens on the cellular and humoral immunity in broiler chickens were studied(Exp 1). Total one hundred ninety two one-day-old commercial broiler chicks(Cobb$\times$Cobb) were raised between constant lighting(CL) and intermittent lighting (1h light: 3h darkness(IL; 1l; 3D) Body weight, feed intake and feed conversion were measured for seven week. Peripheral blood and splenic lymphocyte activities were tested at 3 and 5 wk of age by performing a mitogen cellproliferation assay with a polyclonal T-cell mitogen, concanavalin A (Con A), and B-cell mitogen, lipopolysaccharide (LPS). To investigate the effect of photoperiod on the humoral immunity, chicks were immunized with sheep red blood cell(SRBC) and iinactivated Newcastle disease virus(NDV) vaccine. Total immunoglobulin G(IgG) concentration was also determined. Diurnal change of melatonin was tested in sera. In experiment 2, 0.1ml melatonin were subcutaneously injected from three to five weeks old if immunomodulation effect of lighting regimen was due to the melatonin or not. Injections of melatonin were made at 0700h and the dosage was 10ng (M2), 100ng(M3), 1$\mu\textrm{g}$(M4) per bird daily, respectively. control were quivalent injections of vehicle(M1). Lymphocyte activities were tested and humoral immunities were examined at 5 weeks of age. Blood melatonin concentration was determined at 0h, 1, h, 2h, and 3h posterior to injection at five weeks old. It was higher in CL chicks than IL chickens during the subsequent period of 3 to 5 wk of age. However, weight gain of chicks raised IL were significantly higher at 6 wk of age than CL(P<0.05). Antibody response to NDV was not affected by both photoperiod regimens and melatonin injection, whereas anti-SRMB titer and IgG concentration were enhanced. Lymphocyte activity of chickens raised under IL was sighificantly higher than those of chickens raised under CL. Melatonin injection also increased lymphocyte activity. When peripheral blood lymphocytes were used, proliferation response to LPS and Con A were significantly increased in M2 and respectively. The results of this experiments suggest that IL improved host immune response and melatonin have immunomodulatory roles.

  • This paper presents the analyzed result of the series arc fault current by using the discrete wavelet transform. The series arcing is caused by a loose connection in series with the load circuit. The series arc current is limited to a moderate value by the resistance of the device connected to the circuit, such as an appliance or a lighting system. The amount of energy in the sparks from the series arcing is less than in the case of parallel arcing but only a few amps are enough to be a fire hazard. Therefore, it is hard to detect the distinctive difference between a normal current and a intermittent arc current. This paper, presents the variation of the ratio of peak values and RMS values of the series arc fault current, and proposes the novel series arc fault detecting method by using the discrete wavelet transform. Loads such as a CFL lamp, a vacuum cleaner, a personal computer, and a television, which has the very similar normal current with the arc current, were selected to confirm the novel method.

  • This paper presents a method for measuring tool wear parameters based on two dimensional image information. The tool wear images were obtained from an ITV camera with magnifying and lighting devices, and were analyzed using image processing techniques such as thresholding, noise filtering and boundary tracing. Thresholding was used to transform the captured gray scale image into a binary image for rapid sequential image processing. The threshold level was determined using a novel technique in which the brightness histograms of two concentric windows containing the tool wear image were compared. The use of noise filtering and boundary tracing to reduce the measuring errors was explored. Performance tests of the measurement precision and processing speed revealed that the direct method was highly effective in intermittent tool wear monitoring.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nocturnal light pulses (NLPs) on the feed intake and metabolic rate in geese. Fourteen adult Chinese geese were penned individually, and randomly assigned to either the C (control) or NLP group. The C group was exposed to a 12L:12D photoperiod (12 h light and 12 h darkness per day), whereas the NLP group was exposed to a 12L:12D photoperiod inserted by 15-min lighting at 2-h intervals in the scotophase. The weight of the feed was automatically recorded at 1-min intervals for 1 wk. The fasting carbon dioxide production rate ($CO_2$ PR) was recorded at 1-min intervals for 1 d. The results revealed that neither the daily feed intake nor the feed intakes during both the daytime and nighttime were affected by photoperiodic regimen, and the feed intake during the daytime did not differ from that during the nighttime. The photoperiodic treatment did not affect the time distribution of feed intake. However, NLPs lowered (p<0.05) the mean and minimal $CO_2$ PR during both the daytime and nighttime. Both the mean and minimal $CO_2$ PR during the daytime were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those during the nighttime. We concluded that NLPs lowered metabolic rate of the geese, but did not affect the feed intake; both the mean and minimal $CO_2$ PR were higher during the daytime than during the nighttime.
