Magnesium material could be widely used in the automotive industry because of its high strength to weight ratio, but the electric resistance spot welding process of magnesium sheets is difficult because of its low electric resistance and high thermal conduction and thermal expansion. For this reason, an electric resistance surface friction spot welding process using rotating dies is suggested for the spot welding of magnesium metal sheets. This welding method can be characterized by three heating methods: (1) electric resistance heating on contacted surface, (2) surface friction heating by rotating dies, and (3) thermal conduction heating from heated steel electrodes, for the fusion of metal at the interfacial zone between the two magnesium sheets. This welding process also has variables to explore, such as welding currents, diameters of the steel electrode, and rotating dies. It was found that the welding strength could reach industrial requirements by applying a welding current of 11.0kA, with steel electrodes of 12mm diameter, with rotating dies of 4.4 mm diameter, under the condition of a revolution speed of 1200rpm of rotating dies, for the surface friction spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets of 1.4mm thickness.
The importance of dual-fuel engines has increased for reducing CO2 emissions. However, the low operating temperature of this engine may induce low-temperature corrosion at combustion parts, which reduces the engine service life. To overcome this problem, NiCr38Al4 alloy was developed for valve spindle, but the cost of this alloy is expensive due to its high Cr content. For reducing the manufacturing cost of valve spindle, in the present work, NiCr38Al4 alloy was welded with Nimonic80A alloy by conducting friction welding. The tensile test results show that the strength of friction-welded specimens follows the properties of the lower-strength parent materials, without severe cracks at the interface. The large shear strain and frictional heat from friction welding not only reduce grain size but also induce solute element diffusion at the interfacial region. Because of the low Cr diffusivity compared with Ti, Cr carbides were not observed in the Nimonic80A matrix, while Ti carbides were distributed in both the Nimonic80A and SNCrW matrices.
In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the stress induced by the volume change of an electrode during charge-discharge processes may often cause the mechanical integrity of the electrode to degrade. Polymer binders with enhanced mechanical properties are preferred for improved mechanical integrity and cycling stability of the electrode. In addition, given that sliding and shearing between the polymer binder and components in the electrode may readily occur, frictional and adhesion characteristics of the polymer binder may play a critical role in the mechanical integrity of the electrode. In this study, frictional and adhesion characteristics of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were investigated using a colloidal probe atomic force microscope. Friction loops were obtained under various normal forces ranging from 0 to 159 nN in air and electrolyte and then the interfacial shear strengths of PAN and PVDF in air were calculated to be $1.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.3{\pm}0.3MPa$, respectively. The results show that in electrolyte, interfacial shear strength of PAN decreased slightly ($1.2{\pm}0.2MPa$), whereas that of PVDF decreased drastically ($0.06{\pm}0.01MPa$). Decreases in mechanical properties and adhesion in electrolyte may be responsible for the decrease in interfacial shear strength in electrolyte. The findings from this study may be helpful in developing polymer binders to improve the mechanical integrity of electrodes in LIBs.
Despite the significant features of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs), including better mechanical, fractural, and durability performance, their high content of cement has restricted their use in the construction industry. Although ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) is considered the main supplementary cementitious material, its slow pozzolanic reaction stands against its application. The addition of nano-sized mineral modifiers, including nano-silica (NS), is an alternative to address the drawbacks of using GGBFS. The main object of this empirical and numerical research is to examine the effect of NS on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites; ten mixes were designed, and five levels of NS were considered. This study proposes a new method, using a four-point bending test to assess the use of nano-silica (NS) on the flexural behavior, first cracking strength, fracture energy, and micromechanical parameters including interfacial friction bond strength and maximum bridging stress. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used for monitoring the initiation and propagation of the cracks. In addition, to attain a deep comprehension of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. It was discovered that using nano-silica (NS) in cementitious materials results in an enhancement in the matrix toughness, which prevents multiple cracking and, therefore, strain-hardening. In addition, adding NS enhanced the interfacial transition zone between matrix and fiber, leading to a higher interfacial friction bond strength, which helps multiple cracking in the composite due to the hydrophobic nature of polypropylene (PP) fibers. The findings of this research provide insight into finding the optimum percent of NS in which both ductility and high tensile strength of the composites would be satisfied. As a concluding remark, a new criterion is proposed, showing that the optimum value of nano-silica is 2%. The findings and proposed method of this study can facilitate the design and utilization of green cementitious composites in structures.
Recently, boss and rib test based on backward extrusion process was proposed to quantitatively evaluate the interfacial friction condition in bulk forming process. In this test, the tube-shaped punch with hole pressurizes the workpiece so that the boss and rib are formed along the hole and outer surface of the punch. It was experimentally and numerically revealed that the height of boss is higher than that of the rib under the severe friction condition. This work is focused on the effect of the punch design and flow stress on deformation pattern in boss and rib test. From the boss and rib test simulations, it was found that there is slight variation in both the heights of boss and rib according to the length of punch land, nose radius, and face angle. However the hole diameter of the punch and the clearance between the punch and die have a significant influence on the calibration curves showing the heights of the boss and rib. In addition, the effect of flow stress on the calibration curves was investigated through FE simulations. It was found that there is no effect of strength coefficient of the workpiece on the calibration curves for estimation of friction condition. On the other hand, the strain-hardening exponent of the workpiece has a significant influence on the calibration curve.
Copper chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) has become a key process in integrated circuit (IC) technology. The results of copper CMP depend not only on the mechanical abrasion, but also on the slurry chemistry. The slurry used for Cu CMP is known to have greater chemical reactivity than mechanical material removal. The Cu CMP slurry is composed of abrasive particles, an oxidizing agent, a complexing agent, and a corrosion inhibitor. Citric acid can be used as the complexing agent in Cu CMP slurries, and is widely used for post-CMP cleaning. Although many studies have investigated the effect of citric acid on Cu CMP, no studies have yet been conducted on the interfacial friction characteristics and step height reduction in CMP patterns. In this study, the effect of citric acid on the friction characteristics and step height reduction in a copper wafer with varying pattern densities during CMP are investigated. The prepared slurry consists of citric acid ($C_6H_8O_7$), hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), and colloidal silica. The friction force is found to depend on the concentration of citric acid in the copper CMP slurry. The step heights of the patterns decrease rapidly with decreasing citric acid concentration in the copper CMP slurry. The step height of the copper pattern decreases more slowly in high-density regions than in low-density regions.
The interfacial shear stress is experimentally investigated for co-current air-water stratified flow in inclined rectangular channels having a length of 1854mm, width of 120mm and height of 40mm at almost atmospheric pressure. Experiments are carried out in several inclinations from $0^{\circ}\;up\;to\;10^{\circ}$. The local film thickness and the wave height are measured at three locations, i.e., L/H = 8,23, and 40. According to the inclination angle, the experimental data are categorized into two groups; nearly horizontal data group ($0^{\circ}\;{\leq}\;{\theta}\;{\leq}\;0.7^{\circ}$), and inclined channel data group ($0.7^{\circ}\;{\leq}\;{\theta}\;{\leq}\;10^{\circ}$). Experimental observations for nearly horizontal data group show that the flow is not fully developed due to the water level gradient and the hydraulic jump within the channel. For the inclined channel data group, a dimensionless wave height, $\Delta$h/h, is empirically correlated in terms of $Re_{G}$ and h/H. A modified root-mean-square wave height is proposed to consider the effects of the interfacial and wave propagation velocities. It is found that an equivalent roughness has a linear relationship with the modified root-mean-square wave height and its relationship is independent of the inclination.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been widely utilized as a versatile tool not only for imaging surfaces but also for understanding nano-scale interfacial phenomena. By measuring the responses of the photo detector due to bending and torsion of the cantilever, which are caused by the interactions between the probe and the sample surface, various interfacial phenomena and properties can be explored. One of the challenges faced by AFM researchers originates in the physics of measuring the small forces that act between the probe of a force sensing cantilever and the sample. To understand the interactions between the probe and the sample quantitatively, the force calibration is essential. In this work, the procedures used to calibrate AFM instrumentation for nano-scale force measurement in normal and lateral directions are reviewed.
Graphite and $MoS_2$ were added respectively to the Cu/Sn bond materials of the same composition as a lubricant in order to find out the effect of lubricants on the mechanical properties and the increase in density of the sintered products for microblades. The addition of $MoS_2$ as a lubricant was more beneficial to strength, fracture toughness, and hardness as well as densification than graphite. $MoS_2$ seemed to be more effective in reducing the friction between the metallic powders and die wall during hot pressing process. Due to the better wettability of MoS2 with bond metal alloy, less amount of interfacial defects which is detrimental to mechanical properties use observed.
To experimentally investigate the several wave patterns for the horizontal countercurrent stratified air-water flow, a series of systematic experimental studies have been performed. The experiments are carried out in a horizontal pipe with 4m in length and 102mm in inner diameter. The oater and air superficial velocities vary from 0.0004 to 0.0204 and from 0 to 6m/s, respectively. The instantaneous water thickness is measured by parallel-wire conductance probes, and the wave field is recorded by high speed video camera. Also, to evaluate the wave effect on interfacial friction factor, the pressure drop is measured. Statistical data anal)sis is accomplished in order to obtain the fundamental wave parameters such as un amplitude, length and velocity, and spatial growth factor. By using these statistical parameters, the wave regime boundaries can be verified.
