Currently Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) has become an essential step in the overall semiconductor wafer fabrication technology. Especially the CMP pad conditioner, one of the diamond tools, is required to have strong diamond cohesion. Strong cohesion between diamond and metal matrix prevents macro scratch on the wafer during CMP Process. Typically the diamond tool has been manufactured by sintered, brazed and electro-plated methods. In this paper, some results will be reported of cohesion between diamond and metal matrix of the diamond tools prepared by three different manufacturing methods. The cohesion force of brazed diamond tool is found stronger than the others. This cohesion force is increased in reverse proportion to the contact area of diamond and metal matrix. The brazed diamond tool has a strong chemical combination of the interlayer composed of Cr in metal matrix and C in diamond, which enhance the interfacial cohesion strength between diamonds and metal matrix.
The performance of a hydrate anti-agglomerant (AA) on cyclopentane (CyC5) hydrate anti-agglomeration at various concentrations (0-1 wt%, based on the oil phase) using MMF apparatus has been investigated. At low AA concentrations up to 0.01 wt%, the AA reduces the cohesion force (capillary force) by reducing the CyC5-water interfacial tension. At concentrations higher than 0.1 wt%, hydrate hydrophobicity alternation and AA's thermodynamic inhibition effects are the main part of AA's mechanism. Additionally, a "temporary agglomeration" phenomenon caused by surface melting of the hydrate particles is also observed, which may indicate the AA's weak ability to produce stable water-CyC5 interface.

Chemical mechanical polishing refers to a process by which silicon and partially-processed integrated circuits (IC's) built on silicon substrates are polished to produce planar surfaces for the continued manufacturing of IC's. Chemical mechanical polishing is done by pressing the silicon wafer, face down, onto a rotating platen that is covered by a rough polyurethane pad. During rotation, the pad is flooded with a slurry that contains nanoscale particles. The pad deforms and the roughness of the surface entrains the slurry into the interface. The asperities contact the wafer and the surface is polished in a three-body abrasion process. The contact of the wafer with the 'soft' pad produces a unique elastohydrodynamic situation in which a suction force is imposed at the interface. This added force is non-uniform and can be on the order of the applied pressure on the wafer. We have measured the magnitude and spatial distribution of this suction force. This force will be described within the context of a model of the sliding of hard surfaces on soft substrates.
The dependence of the rheological properties of blood on shape, aggregation, and deformability of red blood cells (RBCs) has been investigated using hybrid systems by coupling fluid with solid models. We present a simple approach for simulating blood as a multi-component fluid, in which RBCs are modeled as droplets of acquired biconcave shape. We used lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) due to its excellent numerical stability as a simulation tool. The model enables us to control the droplet static shape by imposing non-isotropic surface tension force on the interface between the two components. The use of the proposed non-isotropic surface tension method is justified by the Norris hypothesis. This hypothesis states that the shape of the RBC is due to a non-uniform interfacial surface tension force acting on the RBC periphery. This force is caused by the unbalanced distribution of the lipid molecules on the surface of the RBC. We also used the same concept to investigate the dynamic shape change of the RBC while flowing through the microvasculature, and to explore the physics of the Fahraeus, and the Fahraeus-Lindqvist effects.

In this article, the characterization of the interface of hybrid composites was discussed. Interfacial interaction in organic/inorganic hybrid composites, especially silica-containing hybrids can be characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and $^{29}Si$ NMR spectroscopy measurements.
This paper presents a framework how to estimate crack driving forces in terms of crack-tip opening displacement and J-integral for mismatched dissimilar joints with interface cracks. The mismatch in elastic, thermal, and plastic hardening properties is not considered, but the mismatch in plastic yield strengths is emphasized here. The main outcome of the present work is that the existing methods to estimate crack driving forces for homogeneous materials can be used with slight modification. Such modification includes (i) mismatch- corrected limit load solutions, and (ii) evaluating the contribution of each material in dissimilar joints to the total crack driving force, which depends on the strength mismatch of the dissimilar joints.
The solid state reaction of Mo/Si multilayer thin films produced by RF magnetron sputtering technique was examine dusing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray diffraction, and explained in view of two concepts, effective drivig force and effective heat of formation. In constant scanning rate DSC, there were two exothermic peks which corresponded to the formation of h-MoSi2 and t-MoSi2 , respectively. The activation energyfor theformation of h-MoSi2 was 1.5eV , and that of t-MoSi2 was 7.8eV. Nucleation wa stherate controlling mechanism for each of the silicide formation. Amorphous phase was not formed , which was consistent withtheprediction by the concept of effective driving force. h-MoSi2 the first crystalline phase, was considered to have lower interfacial free energy than t-MoSi2 and by increasing temperature it was transformed into more stable t-MoSi2.
