Interfacial evaluation of glass fiber reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy nanocomposite was investigated by micromechanical technique in combination with wettability test. The contact resistance of the CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was measured using a gradient specimen, containing electrical contacts with gradually-increasing spacing. The contact resistance of CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was evaluated by using the two-point method rather than the four-point method. Due to the presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was about $120^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. For surface treated-glass fibers, the tensile strength decreased dramatically, whereas the tensile modulus exhibited little change despite the presence of flaws on the etched fiber surface. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the etched glass fiber and the CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the enhanced surface energy and roughness. As the thermodynamic work of adhesion, $W_a$ increased, both the mechanical IFSS and the apparent modulus increased, which indicated the consistency with each other.
Despite the significant features of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs), including better mechanical, fractural, and durability performance, their high content of cement has restricted their use in the construction industry. Although ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) is considered the main supplementary cementitious material, its slow pozzolanic reaction stands against its application. The addition of nano-sized mineral modifiers, including nano-silica (NS), is an alternative to address the drawbacks of using GGBFS. The main object of this empirical and numerical research is to examine the effect of NS on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites; ten mixes were designed, and five levels of NS were considered. This study proposes a new method, using a four-point bending test to assess the use of nano-silica (NS) on the flexural behavior, first cracking strength, fracture energy, and micromechanical parameters including interfacial friction bond strength and maximum bridging stress. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used for monitoring the initiation and propagation of the cracks. In addition, to attain a deep comprehension of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. It was discovered that using nano-silica (NS) in cementitious materials results in an enhancement in the matrix toughness, which prevents multiple cracking and, therefore, strain-hardening. In addition, adding NS enhanced the interfacial transition zone between matrix and fiber, leading to a higher interfacial friction bond strength, which helps multiple cracking in the composite due to the hydrophobic nature of polypropylene (PP) fibers. The findings of this research provide insight into finding the optimum percent of NS in which both ductility and high tensile strength of the composites would be satisfied. As a concluding remark, a new criterion is proposed, showing that the optimum value of nano-silica is 2%. The findings and proposed method of this study can facilitate the design and utilization of green cementitious composites in structures.

Multifunctional composite materials capable of both load-carrying and energy functions are promising innovative candidates for the advancement of contemporary technologies owing to their relative feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and optimized performance. Carbon fiber (CF)-based structural batteries utilize the graphitic inherent structure to enable the employment of carbon fibers as electrodes, current collectors, and reinforcement, while the matrix system is an ion-conduction and load transfer medium. Although it is possible to enhance performance through the modification of constituents, there remains a need for a systematic design methodology scheme to streamline the commercialization of structural batteries. In this work, a bi-phasic epoxy-based ionic liquid (IL) modified structural battery electrolyte (SBE) was developed via thermally initiated phase separation. The polymer's morphological, mechanical, and electrochemical characteristics were studied. In addition, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between CF/SBE was investigated via microdroplet tests. The results accentuated the significance of considering IFSS and matrix plasticity in designing composite structural batteries. This approach is expected to lay the foundation for realizing smart structures with optimized performance while minimizing the need for extensive trial and error, by paving the way for a streamlined computational design scheme in the future.

The adhesion reliability of the epoxy molding compound (EMC) and the printed circuit board (PCB) interface is critical to the quality and lifetime of the chip package since the EMC protects PCB from the external environment during the manufacturing, storage, and shipping processes. It is necessary to measure adhesion energy accurately to ensure product reliability by optimizing the manufacturing process during the development phase. This research deals with the measurement of EMC/PCB interfacial adhesion energy of chip package that has warpage induced by the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch. The double cantilever beam (DCB) test was conducted to measure adhesion energy, and the spring back force of specimens with warpage was compensated to calculate adhesion energy since the DCB test requires flat substrates. The result was verified by comparing the adhesion energy of flat chip packages come from the same manufacturing process.
The optimal fabrication conditions for $Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{2-{\delta}}$(GDC) buffer layer and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF) cathode on 1mol% $CeO_2-10mol%\;Sc_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ (CeScSZ) electrolyte were investigated for application of IT-SOFCs. GDC buffer layer was used in order to prevent undesired chemical reactions between LSCF and CeScSZ. These experiments were carried out with $5{\times}5cm^2$ anode supported unit cells to investigate the tendencies of electrochemical performance, Microstructure development and interface reaction between LSCF/GDC/CeScSZ along with the variations of GDC buffer layer thickness, sintering temperatures of GDC and LSCF were checked, respectively. Electrochemical performance was analyzed by DC current-voltage measurement and AC impedance spectroscopy. Microstructure and interface reaction were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Although the interfacial reaction between these materials could not be perfectly inhibited, We found that the cell, in which $6{\mu}m$ GDC interlayer sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ and LSCF sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ were applied, showed good interfacial adhesions and effective suppression of Sr, thereby resulting in fairly good performance with power density of $0.71W/cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ and 0.7V.
To simulate the characteristics of magnetic exchange coupling at the interface of MR/TbCo thin films, the directions of magnetizations were calculated by minimizing energy in the films. Newton method and Gauss-Seidel method were used. The width of M-H curve increased with TbCo anisotropy constant, and with the thickness of the transition region of TbCo layer. Hysteresis loop width became extremely narrow (less than 10 Oe of coercivity), when the TbCo transition region length was $400\;\AA$. Also the hysteresis loop of films with low interfacial exchange coupling constant was similiar to that of short transition region length. When interfacial exchange coupling constant was 1/100 of perfect coupling, hysteresis loop showed a coercivity of less than 10 Oe. Comparing the measured hysteresis loop of a fabricated sample with that of simulated one, exchange coupling con¬stant could be estimated.

In this paper, we investigated the effects of short-term oxygen plasma treatment of semiconducting silicone layer to improve interfacial performances in joints prepared with a insulating silicone materials. Surface characterizations were assessed using contact angle measurement and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and then adhesion level and electrical performance were evaluated through T-peel tests and electrical breakdown voltage tests of treated semi-conductive and insulating joints. Plasma exposure mainly increased the polar component of surface energy from $0.21\;dyne/cm^2$ to $47\;dyne/cm^2$ with increasing plasma treatment time and then leveled off. Based on XPS analysis, the surface modification can be mainly ascribed to the creation of chemically active functional groups such as C-O, C=O and COH on semi-conductive silicone surface. This oxidized rubber layer is inorganic silica-like structure of Si bound with three to four oxygen atoms ($SiO_x,\;x=3{\sim}4$). The oxygen plasma treatment produces an increase in joint strength that is maximum for 10 min treatment. However, due to brittle property of this oxidized layer, the highly oxidized layer from too much extended treatment could be act as a weak point, decreasing the adhesion strength. In addition, electrical breakdown level of joints with adequate plasma treatment was increased by about $10\;\%$ with model samples of joints prepared with a semi-conducting/ insulating silicone polymer after applied to interface.

Unidirectional commingled-yarn-based carbon fiber(CF)/polyamide(PA) 6 composite was fabricated under molding pressures of 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 MPa to study its flexural deformation and fracture behavior. Fiber/matrix interfacial bonding area became larger with an increase of molding pressure from 0.4 to 0.6 MPa. For molding pressures .geq. 0.6 MPa, good flexural performance of similar magnitudes was attained. For the fracture test, four kinds of notch direction were adopted : edgewise notches parallel (L) and transverse (T) to the major direction of fiber bundles, and flatwise notches parallel(ZL) and perpendicular(ZT) to this direction. Nominal bend strength for L and ZL specimens exhibited high sensitivity to notching. ZL specimens revealed the lowest values of the critical stress intensity factor $K_c$ which was slightly superior to those of unfilled PA6 matrix. Enlargement of the compression area for T specimens was analyzed by means of the rigidity reduction resulting from the fracture occurrence.

The purpose of present paper is to investigate a fracture characteristics of the finite-width single-edge-notch(SEN) carbon fiber/epoxy reinforced plastics(CFRP) plates by using an acoustic emission(AE). Uni-directionally oriented 10 plies CFRPs specimen which had different notch length were prepared for monotonic tensile test. Matrix cracking appeared over whole testing process and fiber breaking appeared later on mainly Load distribution factor of the matrix confirmed that increased according as increases of plate width ratio. The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix cracking, disbonding, interfacial delamination, fiber pull-out, fiber breaking, and etc. In the result of AE amplitude distribution analysis, matrix cracking, fiber disbonding or interfacial delamination, and fiber pull-out or fiber breaking signal correspond to <65dB, <75dB, and <90dB respectively, Also, changes of the slope of cumulative AE energy represented crazing phenomena or degradation of materials.
Stainless steel bipolar plates have many advantage such as high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength and low fabrication cost. However, they need a passivation layer due to low corrosion resistance under PEM fuel cell operation condition. In this study, polyphenyene sulfide(PPS)/carbon composite coated stainless steel bipolar plates were fabricated by compression molding method after PPS/carbon composite sprayed on the stainless steel plate. PPS and carbon were chosen as the binder and conductive filler of passivation layer, respectively. The interfacial contact resistance and corrosion resistance of PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel bipolar plates were investigated and compared to the stainless steel. The PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel compared to stainless steel was improved interfacial contact resistance. The results of the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic measurements also showed that the PPS/carbon composite coated stainless steel did not corroded under PEM fuel cell operating conditions.
