  • Compressible two-phase flow is analyzed based on the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation. For water, Tamman type stiffened equation of state is used. Numerical fluxes are calculated using the ALE two-phase Godunov scheme which assumes only that the speed of sound and pressure can be provided whenever density and internal energy are given. Effects of the approximations of a material interface speed are Investigated h method Is suggested to assign a rigid body boundary condition effectively To validate the developed code, several well-known problems are calculated and the results are compared with analytic or other numerical solutions including a single material Sod shock tube problem and a gas/water shock tube problem The code is applied to analyze the refraction and transmission of shock waves which are impacting on a water-gas interface from gas or water medium.

  • In masive concrete placement, cracking problem due to hydration heat is frequently encountered. One of measure to solve this problem is to make a construction joint. However, it is cumbersome to make it by chipping the surface of joint. In this study, push-out test for 18 specimens was conducted to compare the interface shear strength of consturction joints whose surfaces were prepared with three methods; chipping, rib-lath, folded rib-lath. Compared to the specimens made with conventional surface chipping, those with rib-lathe showd excellent preformance increasing shear resistance capacity and the role of shear key conceived by folding rib-lath played important role in enhancing shear resistance.

  • The present paper investigates the propagation of Love-type wave in a composite structure comprised of imperfectly bonded piezoelectric layer with lower fiber-reinforced half-space with rectangular shaped irregularity at the common interface. Closed-form expression of phase velocity of Love-type wave propagating in the composite structure has been deduced analytically for electrically open and short conditions. Some special cases of the problem have also been studied. It has been found that the obtained results are in well-agreement to the Classical Love wave equation. Significant effects of various parameters viz. irregularity parameter, flexibility imperfectness parameter and viscoelastic imperfectness parameter associated with complex common interface, dielectric constant and piezoelectric coefficient on phase velocity of Love-type wave has been reported. Numerical computations and graphical illustrations have been carried out to demonstrate the deduced results for various cases. Moreover, comparative study has been performed to unravel the effects of the presence of reinforcement and piezoelectricity in the composite structure and also to analyze the existence of irregularity and imperfectness at the common interface of composite structure in context of the present problem which serves as a salient feature of the present study.

  • This paper studies the energies and energy release rate (ERR) for the initially rotationally symmetric compressed (or stretched) in the inward (outward) radial direction of the PZT/Elastic/PZT sandwich circular plate with interface penny-shaped cracks. The investigations are made by utilizing the so-called three-dimensional linearized field equations and relations of electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials. The quantities related to the initial stress state are determined within the scope of the classical linear theory of piezoelectricity. Mathematical formulation of the corresponding problem and determination of the quantities related to the stress-strain state which appear as a result of the action of the uniformly normal additional opening forces acting on the penny-shaped crack's edges are made within the scope of the aforementioned three-dimensional linearized field equations solution which is obtained with the use of the FEM modelling. Numerical results of the energies and ERR and the influence of the problem parameters on these quantities are presented and discussed for the PZT- 5H/Al/PZT-5H, PZT-4/Al/PZT-4, $BaTiO_3/Al/BaTiO_3$ and PZT-5H/StPZT-5H sandwich plates. In particular, it is established that the magnitude of the influence of the piezoelectricity and initial loading on the ERR increases with crack radius length.

  • A code developed using the flux-difference splitting scheme on the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate three-dimensional internal waves. The material interface is regarded as a moving contact discontinuity and is captured on the basis of mass conservation without any additional treatment across the interface. Inviscid fluxes are estimated using the flux-difference splitting scheme for incompressible fluids of different density. The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is used to enforce the boundary condition for a moving three-dimensional body. Immersed boundary nodes are identified within an instantaneous fluid domain on the basis of edges crossing a boundary. The dependent variables are reconstructed at the immersed boundary nodes along local normal lines to provide the boundary condition for a discretized flow problem. The internal waves are simulated, which are generated by an pitching ellipsoid near an material interface. The effects of density ratio and location of the ellipsoid on internal waves are compared.

  • Actual engineering structure is frequently very complex, and parts of structure are designed independently by different engineers. Also each structure contains so many degree of freedom. For these reason, methods have been developed which permits the structure to be divided into components or substructures, with analysis being done on a small substructure in order to obtain a full structural system. In such case, because of different mesh size among finite element model (FEM) or different matching points among FEM models and experimentally obtained models, their interfacing points may be non-matching. Solving this non-matching problem is useful to other application such as structural dynamic modification or model updating. In this work, virtual node concept is introduced. Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the interface compatibility constraint, and interface displacement is approximated by polynomial presentation. The governing equation of whole structure is derived using hybrid variational principle. The eigenvalue of whole structure are calculated using the determinant search method. The number of degree of freedom in the eigenvalue problem can be drastically reduced to just the number of interface degree of freedom. Some numerical simulation is performed to show usefulness of synthesis method.

  • In order to improve calculational efficiency of the CAPP code in the analysis of the hexagonal reactor core, we have tried to implement a refined AFEN method with transverse gradient basis functions and interface flux moments in the hexagonal geometry. The numerical scheme for the refined AFEN method adopted here is the response matrix method that uses the interface partial currents as nodal unknowns instead of the interface fluxes used in the original AFEN method. Since the response matrix method is single-node based, it has good properties such as good calculational efficiency and parallel computing affinity. Because a refined AFEN method equivalent nonlinear FDM response matrix method tried first could not provide a numerically stable solution, a direct formulation of the refined AFEN response matrix were developed. To show the numerical performance of this response matrix method against the original AFEN method, the numerical error analyses were performed for several benchmark problems including the VVER-440 LWR benchmark problem and the MHTGR-350 HTGR benchmark problem. The results showed a more than three times speedup in computing time for the LWR and HTGR benchmark problems due to good convergence and excellent calculational efficiency of the refined AFEN response matrix method.

  • SDM (Structural Dynamics Modification) is a tool to improve dynamic characteristics of a structure, more specifically of a base structure, by adding or deleting auxiliary (modifying) structures. In this paper, the goal of the optimal SDM is set to maximize the natural frequency of a base plate structure by attaching serially-connected beam stiffeners. The design variables are chosen as positions of the attaching beam stiffeners, where the number of stiffeners is considered as a design space. The problem of non-matching interface nodes between the base plate and beam stiffeners is solved by using localized Lagrange multipliers, which act to glue the two structures with non-matching interface nodes. As fer the cases of non-matching interface nodes problem, the governing equation of motion of a structure can be considered from the viewpoint of a topological modification, which involves the change of the number of structural members and DOFs. Consequently, the eigenpairs of the beam-stiffened plate structure are obtained by using an eigen reanalysis technique of topological modifications. Evolution Strategies (ES), which is a probabilistic population-based optimization technique that mimics the principles from biological evolution in nature, is utilized as a mean for the optimization.

  • In the paper the dynamics of the oscillating moving load acting in the interior of the hollow cylinder surrounded with elastic medium is studied within the scope of the exact field equations of 3D elastodynamics. It is assumed that the oscillating load act on the certain arc of the internal circle of the cylinder's cross section and this load moves with constant velocity along the cylinder's axis. The corresponding 3D dynamic problem is solved by employing moving coordinate system, the exponential Fourier transform and the presentation these transforms with the Fourier series. The expressions of the transforms are determined analytically, however their originals are found numerically. Under the investigations carried out in the paper the main attention is focused on the so-called "gyroscopic effect", according to which, the influence of the vibration frequency on the values of the critical velocity and interface stresses are determined. Numerical results illustrated this effect are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established how the non-axisymmetricity of the problem acts on the influence of the load oscillation on its critical velocity and on the interface stresses.
