The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of application of microwave energy for the fabrication of polymer/clay nanocomposite. APES/Clay nanocomposites were prepared at 13$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min with various content of clay by melt-intercalation method under classical and microwave heating source. APES/Clay samples were characterized by the means of X-ray diffractometry(XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), and rheometric dynamic analysis(RDA). It was found that intercalated or exfoliated state was obtained in the samples according to the condition of organic modification, clay content, and heating source.
A stable intercalation complex was formed by adsorption of alcanol (ROH, R; $C_{10}H_2$, $C_{12}H_{25}$, $C_{14}H_{29}$) on the surfaces of Yongil bentonite in which the interlayer cation had been exchanged by n-decylammonium ion $(C_{10}H_{21}NH_3^+)$ The layer charge density calculated from the increaments of basal spacings was 0.34 per unit chemical formula. Thermochemical properties of synthesized $C_{10}H_{21}NH_3^+$ montmorillonite were studied by means of DSC, TGA, DTG, Thermal analysis showed two steps of desoption behavior of $C_{10}H_{21}NH_3^+$ ion namely nonyl $(CH_3(CH_2)_8$ decomposition reaction of 40$0^{\circ}C$ and methyleneammonium decomposition reaction of 78$0^{\circ}C$ The activation energy of nonyl decomposition reaction of $C_{10}H_{21}NH_3^+$ -montmorillonite respectively.
Na alloyed graphite intercalation compounds with stage 1 and 2 were synthesized using the high temperature and pressure technique. Thermal stability and staging transitions of the compounds were investigated depending on heating rates. The thermal stability and temperature dependence of the deintercalation compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analyzer. Enthalpy of formations were confirmed at temperatures between 25 and $500^{\circ}C$, depending on the various heating rates. The structure ions and interlayer spaces of the graphite were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Diffractograms of stages with non-integral (00l) values were obtained in the thermal decomposition process, and stacking disorder defects and random stage modes were observed. The average value of the interlayer C-C bond lengths were found approximately $2.12{\AA}$ and $1.23{\AA}$ from the diffractions. Based on the stage transition, the degree of the deintercalaton has a inverse-linear relationship against the heating rate.
The intercalation chemistry of graphite presents an attractive route to obtain few-layered graphene platelets based on the expanded interlayer spacing. We report that the lithium can be intercalated into the graphite in a controllable manner by adjusting the variables such as temperature, pressure, and reaction time. From the X-ray diffraction experiments, the lithium-graphite intercalaltion compounds (Li-GICs) can be produced as the first stage compounds ($LiC_6$), the second-stage compounds ($LiC_{12}$), and the mixtures, which is most likely to be dependent on the temperature and reaction time. Since these Li-GICs are expected to facilitate the exfoliation of graphite, we investigated the feasibility of Li-GICs as a effective precursors for the generation of single-or few-layered graphite nano-platelets.
Biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared by mixing a polymer resin and layered silicates by the melt intercalation method. Internal structure of the nanocomposite was characterized by using the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Nanocomposites having exfoliated and intercalated structures were obtained by employing two different organically modified nanoclays. Rheological properties in shear and extensional flows and biodegradability of nanocomposites were measured. In shear flow, shear thinning behavior and increased storage modulus were observed as the clay loading increased. In extensional flow, strain hardening behavior was observed in well dispersed system. Nanocomposites with the exfoliated structure had better biodegradability than nanocomposites with the intercalated structure or pure polymer.
Four different types of chitosan-based nanocomposite films were prepared using a solvent casting method by incorporating with four types of nanoparticles, i.e., an unmodified montmorillonite (Na-MMT), an organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B), a Nano-silver, and a Ag-zeolite (Ag-Ion). X-ray diffraction patterns of the nanocomposite films indicated that a certain degree of intercalation was formed in the nanocomposite films, with the highest intercalation in the Na-MMT-incorporated films followed by films with Cloisite 30B and Ag-Ion. SEM micrographs showed that in all the nanocomposite films, except the Nanosilver-incorporated one, nanoparticles were dispersed homogeneously throughout the chitosan polymer matrix. Consequently, mechanical and barrier properties of chitosan films were affected through intercalation of nanoparticles, i.e., tensile strength (TS) increased by 7-16%, while water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased by 25-30% depending on the nanoparticle material tested. In addition, chitosan-based nanocomposite films, especially silver-containing ones, showed a promising range of antimicrobial activity.
Biofunctional nanohybrids are synthesized from layered double hydroxide (LDH) and the vitamins such as ascorbic acid and topopherol acid succinate. Either ion exchange or copricipitaion leads to successful intercalation of the vitamins into gallery space of LDH that offers a new route to safe preservation of bioactivity as well as controlled release. Intercalations of vitamins are clearly reflected on the increase in the basal spacing of ZnAl-(Nitrate) LDH from 8.5 ${\AA}$ to 10.5 ${AA}$ for ascorbate, and 49.0 ${AA}$ for tocopherol acid succinate, respectively. No significant change in UV-Vis and IR absorption characteristics of the intercalated vitamins strongly supports the safe maintenance of their bioactivities without any deterioration of chemical and structural integrity. Furthermore, it is shown that the hybridized vitamins could be discharged in a controlled kinetics.
