  • In this study, two powerful techniques, namely particle swarm optimization (PSO) and imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) were selected and combined with a pre-developed ANN model aiming at improving its performance prediction of the compressive strength of concrete modified with fly ash. To achieve this study's aims, a comprehensive database with 379 data samples was collected from the available literature. The output of the database is the compressive strength (CS) of concrete samples, which are influenced by 9 parameters as model inputs, namely those related to mix composition. The modeling steps related to ICA-ANN (or neuro-imperialism) and PSO-ANN (or neuro-swarm) were conducted through the use of several parametric studies to design the most influential parameters on these hybrid models. A comparison of the CS values predicted by hybrid intelligence techniques with the experimental CS values confirmed that the neuro-swarm model could provide a higher degree of accuracy than another proposed hybrid model (i.e., neuro-imperialism). The train and test correlation coefficient values of (0.9042 and 0.9137) and (0.8383 and 0.8777) for neuro-swarm and neuro-imperialism models, respectively revealed that although both techniques are capable enough in prediction tasks, the developed neuro-swarm model can be considered as a better alternative technique in mapping the concrete strength behavior.

  • A large-scaled research project titled "Intelligent Excavating System (IES)" sponsored by Korean government has launched in 2006. An issue of real-time 3D terrain modeling has become a crucial point for successful implementation of IES due to many application limitations of state-of-the-art techniques developed in various high-technology fields. Many feasible technologies such as laser scanning, structured lighting and so on were widely reviewed by professionals and researchers for one year. Various efforts such as literature reviews, interviews, and indoor experiments make us select a structural light technique and stereo vision technique as appropriate techniques for accomplishment of real-time 3D terrain modeling. It, however, revealed that off-the-shelf products of structural light and stereo-vision technique had many technical problems which should be resolved for practical applications in IES. This study introduces diverse methods modifying off-the-shelf package of the structural light method, one of feasible techniques and eventually allowing this technique to be successfully utilized for achieving fundamental research goals. This study also presents many efforts to resolve practical difficulties of this technique considering basic characteristics of excavating operations and particular environment of construction sites. Findings showed in this study would be beneficial for other researchers to conduct new researches for application of vision techniques to construction fields by provision of detail issues about practical application and diverse practical methods as solutions overcoming these issues.

  • This study explores how the advanced data analysis capabilities of intelligent information technology are being utilized in politics. In particular, we focus on the fact that voter behavioral targeting in election campaigns comes into conflict with the democratic process in various ways. For this purpose, this study examines political micro-targeting and political bots. It is aimed at showing that these technology-based campaign techniques work as a factor preventing free expression of opinions and discussions, which are the core of democracy itself. Then we identify the attributes of the algorithm that affects them. As a result, this study suggests that the following issues might arise regarding intelligent information technology-based politics and democracy. First, inequality in political participation becomes more severe. Second, the public debate between voters gets more difficult. Third, superficial politics is prevalent. Fourth, single-issue politics and the exclusion of political representation is likely to increase. Fifth, political privacy might also be invaded. Based on our discussions, this study concludes that it is our role to find ways by which intelligent information technology and democracy can coexist.

  • We propose an intelligent interface algorithm using hand gesture recognition information based on artificial intelligence. This method is functionally an interface that recognizes various motions quickly and intelligently by using MediaPipe and artificial intelligence techniques such as KNN, LSTM, and CNN to track and recognize user hand gestures. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, it is applied to a self-made 2D top-view racing game and robot control. As a result of applying the algorithm, it was possible to control various movements of the virtual object in the game in detail and robustly. And the result of applying the algorithm to the robot control in the real world, it was possible to control movement, stop, left turn, and right turn. In addition, by controlling the main character of the game and the robot in the real world at the same time, the optimized motion was implemented as an intelligent interface for controlling the coexistence space of virtual and real world. The proposed algorithm enables sophisticated control according to natural and intuitive characteristics using the body and fine movement recognition of fingers, and has the advantage of being skilled in a short period of time, so it can be used as basic data for developing intelligent user interfaces.

  • In the mid 1990s, the combination of vehicles and communication was expected to bolster the stagnant car industry by offering a flood of new revenues. In-vehicle computing systems provide safety and control systems needed to operate the vehicle as well as infotainment, edutainment, entertainment, and mobile commerce services in a safe and responsible manner. Since 1980 the word "telematics" has meant the blending of telecommunications and informatics. Lately, telematics has been used more and more to mean "automotive telematics" which use informatics and telecommunications to enhance the functionality of motor vehicles such as wireless data applications, intelligent cruise control, and GPS in vehicles. This definition identifies telecommunications transferring information as the key enabling technology to provide these advanced services. In this paper, a possible framework for future telematics, which called an Intelligent Vehicle Network(IVN), is proposed. The paper also introduces and compares a number of existing technologies and the terms of their capabilities to support a suite of services. The paper additionally the paper suggests and analyzes possible directions for future telematics from current telematics techniques.

  • The objective of this paper is to apply Extended AND-OR Graph (EAOG)-related techniques to extract knowledge from a specific problem-domain and perform analysis in complicated decision making area. Expert systems use expertise about a specific domain as their primary source of solving problems belonging to that domain. However, such expertise is complicated as well as uncertain, because most knowledge is expressed in causal relationships between concepts or variables. Therefore, if expert systems can be used effectively to provide more intelligent support for decision making in complicated specific problems, it should be equipped with real-time inference mechanism. We develop two kinds of EAOG-driven inference mechanisms(1) EAOG-based forward chaining and (2) EAOG-based backward chaining. and The EAOG method processes the following three characteristics. 1. Real-time inference : The EAOG inference mechanism is suitable for the real-time inference because its computational mechanism is based on matrix computation. 2. Matrix operation : All the subjective knowledge is delineated in a matrix form, so that inference process can proceed based on the matrix operation which is computationally efficient. 3. Bi-directional inference : Traditional inference method of expert systems is based on either forward chaining or backward chaining which is mutually exclusive in terms of logical process and computational efficiency. However, the proposed EAOG inference mechanism is generically bi-directional without loss of both speed and efficiency.

  • Multimedia has to carry data of heterogeous types. Multicast communication techniques can supply the most appropriate infrastructures to such multimedia. Of many multicast protocols, the core based tree (CBT) protocol is the most concentrative studies are conducted on. The CBT places a core router at center of the shared tree and transfers data through the tore router. However, the CBT has two problems due to centralizing all network traffics into a core router. First it can raise bottleneck effect at a core router. Second, it is possible to make an additive processing overhead when core router is distant from receivers. To cope with the problems, this paper proposes an intelligent anycast routing protocol. The anycast routing attempts to distribute the centralized traffic into plural core routers by using a knowledge-based algorithm. The anycast routing estimates the traffic characteristics of multimedia data far each multicast source, and achieves effectively the distributing that places an appropriate core router to process the incoming traffic based on the traffic information in the event that request of receivers are raised. This method prevent the additional overhead to distribute traffic because an individual core router uses the information estimated to multicast sources connected to oneself and the traffic processing statistics shared with other core neuters.
