Ways to Incorporate Key Competencies in the Science Curriculum

  • This study explored ways to implement a competencies-based curriculum in schools by reviewing exemplary cases that have introduced Key Competencies (KCs) in the school science curriculum. Since the OECD redefined key competencies as 'what people should know and do in order to lead a successful life in a well-functioning society', many countries have emphasized the use of a competencies-based curriculum. Foreign and domestic classroom cases, which have used a competencies-based curriculum in science teaching, were collected and analyzed. Through open-ended interviews with teachers and principals, we investigated changes of teachers' professional knowledge and practice that were evident as a result of the implementation of competencies-based curriculum in science class. Foreign science teachers suggested ways to relate competencies-based curriculum and science curriculum including maintaining a balance between competencies-based curriculum and content-based curriculum. They also integrated KCs into all subject-based curriculums, gave priority to KCs over subject matter knowledge, and developed KCs through teaching science contents that students wanted to learn. On the other hand, Korean science teachers suggested reconstructing competencies-based curriculum by extracting common attributes from the existing subject areas. They also made KCs realized through content teaching, and developed various KCs within science contexts. Implications of the competencies-based curriculum for science teaching and learning were discussed at the end.

  • Mathematics problem based learning(PBL), which has recently attracted much attention, is a teaching and learning method to increase mathematical ability and help learning mathematical concepts and principles through problem solving using students' mathematical prerequisite knowledge. In spite of such a quite attention, it is not easy to apply and practice PBL actually in school mathematics. Furthermore, the recent instructional situations or environments has focused on student's self construction of their learning and its process. Because of this reason, to whom is related to mathematics education including math teachers, investigation and recognition on the degree of students' acquisition of mathematical thinking skills and strategies(for example, inductive and deductive thinking, critical thinking, creative thinking) is an very important work. Thus, developing mathematical thinking skills is one of the most important goals of school mathematics. In particular, recently, connection or integration of one subject and the other subject in school is emphasized, and then mathematics might be one of the most important subjects to have a significant role to connect or integrate with other subjects. While considering the reason is that the ultimate goal of mathematics education is to pursue an enhancement of mathematical thinking ability through the enhancement of problem solving ability, this study aimed to implement basically what is the meaning of the integrated thinking ability in problem based learning theory in Mathematics. In addition, using historical materials, this study was to develop mathematical materials and a sample of a concrete instructional guideline for enhancing integrated thinking ability in problem based learning program.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop the integrated basic dental hygiene curriculum after reviewing and analyzing the traditional curriculum. First, the standardization of curriculum in three years and four years dental hygiene department curriculum is needed. Second, integration between subjects should include learning objectives of the curriculum. Third, the basic subjects of dental hygiene should provide and satisfy the learning goals of dental biochemistry, nutrition, dentistry and dental pharmacology, and the basic subjects should be integrated into clinical considerations. Fourth, the integration of the curriculum should make the students dental hygiene experts by nurturing and integration of basic sciences. The integration of curriculum is able to provide the unified subject that does not same and duplicated contents.

  • Data fusion Is a technique used for creating an Integrated database by combining two or more databases that include a different set of variables or attributes. This paper attempts to apply data fusion technique to customer relationships management (CRM), in that we can not only plan a database structure but also collect and manage customer data In a more efficient way In particular our study Is useful when no s1n91e database Is complete, i.e., each and every subject in the pre-integrated database contains somewhat missing observations. According to the way of treating the common variables, donors can be differently selected for the substitution of the missing attributes of recipients. One way is to find the donor that has the highest correlation coefficient with the recipient by. treating common variables metrically The other is based on the closest distance by the correspondence analysis in case of treating common variables nominally. The predictability of data fusion for CRM can be evaluated by measuring the correlation of the original database and the substituted one. A Monte Carlo Simulation analysis is used to examine the stability of the two substitution methods in building an integrated database.

  • This study makes three apartment building complex an object of analyzing representative building types and energy consumption rate of house holds, and effect of outdoor air cooling. Recently created apatrment complex is composed of very various types of building, plan, and orientation etc. But, it is difficult to remark conclusively that these various types of buildings are designed energy-effectively. Because architects are hard to find useful energy design guideline for decision making. By the preceding study, the present condition and problem about this subject is grasped, apartment building types were examined and representative types were extracted. In this study, energy simulation was conducted, and the effect to outdoor air cooling was analyzed about representative types of the subject apartment complex. It is expected that this analysed results will be basic data for the more integrated study. Research consequence can be summarized as follow: 1) Besides solar gain, household layout of building, orientation, and plan etc. effects compositively on energy consumption rate. 2) The effect of ourdoor air cooling in building of tower type can be improved by arranging households appropriately.

AN INTEGRATED EMG STUDY OF THE MASSETER AND ANTERIOR TEMPORAL MUSCLE IN NORMAL PERSON DURING CHEWING (정상인(正常人)의 저작운동시(咀嚼運動時) 교근(咬筋)과 측두근(側頭筋)의 근활성도(筋活性度)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to standardize and classify the coordination pattern among the left and right masseter and anterior temporal muscles, in terms of integrated EMG values per stroke during gum chewing in normal subjects. In this study, 20 normal subjects were selected to chew a piece of gum and integrated EMG from middle portion of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles on both sides were recorded 20 times during each of the right and left chewing respectively. And the Bioelectric Processor Model EM2 (Myo-tronies Research, Inc., U.S.A.) with the surface electrodes was used to record the EMG activity during all experimental procedures. The results were as follows; 1. In all subjects, the chewing side masseter muscle was predominantly active among the four muscles examined. 2. The integrated EMG value of the middle of masseter muscle was significantly predominant than those of the anterior temporal muscle (p<0.0001) on the chewing side, but no significant predominant was observed on the nonchewing side (p<0.98). 3. In comparison with same muscles on the chewing and nonchewing side, low correlation coefficient was found between the middle of masseter muscles (R=0.317), but high correlation coefficient was found between the anterior temporal muscles (R=0.738). Between two muscles on the same side, there were significant correlation in the chewing (R=0.557) and nonchewing side (R=0.625). 4. In the coordination patterns among four muscles examined, distinct individual differences were found, but in an identical subject one fixed pattern appeared with significant reproducibility.

A Case Study and Consultation on Instructional Design Process for Integrated Science Lesson by Secondary Science Teachers - Focus on the Integrated Science Five-Step Instructional Design for Integrated Science Lesson - (중등과학교사의 통합과학 수업설계 과정에 대한 사례분석 및 컨설팅 -통합과학 5단계 수업계획서 설계를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze secondary science teachers' planning process for an integrated science lesson. For this study, relevant references were collected from various sources, including literatures, previous studies regarding integrated science education, and individual studies. Two teachers (one from middle school and the other from high school) participated and 'the five-step instructional design' was adopted from former studies in this subject. The teachers were asked to develop an instructional plan based on 'the design' provided. While the consultation provided a framework for an instructional plan, the teachers were asked to take a leading role in terms of selecting the chapter to be taught; analyzing the course structure; and making detailed teaching plans. In the course of consultations, discussions, records, and analysis were organized into a journal. Based on the journal, the aspects of the planning process, including difficulties and problems faced by teachers, were analyzed in-depth. From the study, it could be observed that both high school and middle school teachers face various difficulties in preparing for the integrated science lesson. Among other things, the teachers emphasized the difficulties in the stages of selecting the topic, collecting the relevant information, and restructuring and organizing the lecture contents.

Improvement of EIA Associated with Greenhouse Gases Subject Matter for the Preparedness of Post-2020 (Post-2020에 연계한 온실가스 항목의 환경영향평가 개선 방안)

  • In orderto cope with the post-2020 in accordance with the Paris Agreement, greenhouse gas (GHG)reduction in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and its contributions to post-2020 were discussed. The 26 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) administered by Geum-River Basin Environmental Office from 2010 to 2019 were analyzed for reviewing GHG mitigation measures. From the case study, it was found that the assessment of GHG emissions reduction and climate change adaptation were not appropriately performed. In this study, the following measures are proposed to improve the inappropriate assessment of 'GHG subject matter' associated with EIA according to post-2020, 1) allotment of enforced charge on GHG emission during the EIA process, 2) addition of the 'GHG subject matter' in 'establishing permissible discharge standards' which is based on "Act on the Integrated Control of Pollutant-discharging Facilities", and 3) the participation of stakeholders in early EIA stage for governance. A Case Study of the Effective Strategy Fostering Library-Assisted Instruction Based on the Fixed Schedule of Subject-Specific Classes (개별 교과의 고정 시간표를 활용한 도서관활용수업 활성화 전략에 관한 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to indicate a case that applied forming a instructional community-establishing instructional strategies-developing learning and assessment toolkits as a connective strategy between information literacy and curricula to foster the Library-Assisted instruction(LAI). In this case a new instructional community consisted of a teacher librarian, a korean language teacher, a korean history teacher and a korean geography teacher of the 10th grade. The community developed integrated learning topics connected with subject-specific classes and designed LAI's instructional strategy. Finally learning and assessment toolkits containing information problem solving and resources using model were designed by this community. This method can provide students with enough time in using resources and teach information literacy systematically. Also it will help teacher librarians improve leadership and partnership in the school community.

Report of the Qualitative Research Related to Postpartum Depression (산후우울증과 관련된 질적 연구에 대한 보고 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to help the development of qualitative research in the field of Korean medicine and policy support for postpartum depression. Methods: Qualitative studies related to postpartum depression retrieved from five databases were evaluated independently by two researchers using the integrated criterion, Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). In addition, each subject of study was qualitatively synthesized. Results: A total of 1,374 papers were searched and 13 papers were finally selected. The results of the study using COREQ lacked information about the researchers. The results of the study were integrated into three themes: "Feeling Failure", "Struggling for self-identity and role of mother" and "Seeing Help and Recovery". Conclusions: Postpartum depression can be accessed through various methods such as Korean medicine counseling, acupuncture and herbal medicine, and further research and manual preparation is required.
