A Study on Metadata-Driven Data Integration (메타데이터 기반 데이터 통합 관리 동향에 관한 연구)

  • It is essential for companies to manage massive data for dealing with large volume of transactions and customers' needs. To this end, the companies have operated data warehouse with many complex tools for data gathering and reporting to the end-users. However, the data from the heterogeneous tools at the various sources cannot be exchanged because of the different interfaces. Therefore, the data cannot be controlled with integrated manner, and furthermore the companies do not focus the quality of data resulting in the data quality problem. Thus, this study suggests how to manage massive data with a metadata. In particular, we investigate current status of metadata management, its appliance, and perspectives. The contribution of this research is to apply the metadata management system to the real world and to suggest its management procedure.

A Study on Metadata-based Data Quality Management in a Container Terminal (컨테이너터미널의 메타데이터 기반 데이터 품질관리 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the massive increase of data that should be managed, the problems in data quality management have been issued. In addition the lack of integrated management of the data causes duplication of data, low qualify services, and, missing data. To overcome these problems, this study attempts to examine the way of the data qualify management. To do this, metadata was defined, and its current management status in various view points was analyzed, and finally the metadata management was applied to the container terminal. for the "A" container terminal, we performed data standardization, and reflected major constraints and developed the pilot metadata repository. The contributions of this study are in improvement of the data qualify in the container terminal, and its practical application with metadata management method. Limitations of this study is its partial implementation of the metadata management to the company and interoperability of the metadata management for business to business data integration for the future research.

A Study on the Integrated Services for Cultural Heritage Archives (문화유산 아카이브 통합 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to suggest the ways of integrated services for Cultural Heritage Archives that belong to the Cultural Heritage Administration. To this end, the study analyzed the archives of major affiliated organizations of the Cultural Heritage Administration that manage and preserve Korean cultural assets. A cultural asset metadata based on the multiple entity model and applicable data link model standard was suggested for the integrated service of high-value-added cultural heritage information resources.

Schema Class Inheritance Model for Research Data Management and Search (연구데이터 관리 및 검색을 위한 스키마 클래스 상속 모델)

  • The necessity of the raw data management and reuse is issued by diffusion of the recognition that research data is a national asset. In this paper, a metadata design model by schema class inheritance and a metadata integrated search model by schema objects are suggested for a structural management of the data. A data architecture in which an schema object has an 1 : 1 relation to the data collection was designed. A suggested model was testified by creation of a virtual schema class and objects which inherit the schema class. It showed the possibility of implement systematically. A suggested model can be used to manage the data which are produced by government agencies because schema inheritance and integrated search model present way to overcome the weak points of the 'Top-dow Hierarchy model' which is being used to design the metadata schema.

  • The purpose of this study is to design semantic web and policy direction for national knowledge and information management. The paper describes all the components needed to accomplish the objective: 1) creating unchangeable and unique identifiers for metadata elements, resources, and ontology classes and properties; 2) recommending active use of XML namespaces; 3) establishing metadata and application profile standards for national integrated searching; 4)developing a metadata registry to promote semantic interoperability among metadata; 5) discussing the need of creating ontologies using W3C OWL and ISO Topic Maps; 6) providing intelligent search services based on metadata; and 7) presenting future directions and tasks of national knowledge and information management.

  • A literature analysis for the planning and realization of the multimedia meta database and digital library's integrated information system was carried out to establish the various oceanographic resources in the Oceanographic Information Center, the first in Korea. The study targeted from printed matter, network resources, full-text and to VOD. The focus of the analysis lies in the providing practical integrated information retrieval service for oceanographic resources based on the framework of effective MODS metadata with network resources description. The analyses included oceanographic resources, multimedia information processing, MODS metadata descriptive elements, metadata classification, system organization, and retrieval for planning and implementation of the multimedia meta database system.

  • Video data occurred in multimedia documents consist of a large scale of irregular data including audio-visual, spatial-temporal, and semantic information. In general, it is difficult to grasp the exact meaning of such a video information because video data apparently consist of unmeaningful symbols and numerics. In order to relieve these difficulties, it is necessary to develop an integrated manager for complex structures of video data and provide users of video digital libraries with easy, systematic access mechanisms to video informations. This paper proposes a generic integrated video information model(GIVIM) based on an extended Dublin Core metadata system to effectively store and retrieve video documents in digital libraries. The GIVIM is an integrated mo이 of a video metadata model(VMN) and a video architecture information model(VAIM). We also present design and implementation results of a video document management system(VDMS) based on the GIVIM.

Implementing Data warehouse Methodology Architecture: From Metadata Perspective

  • Recently, many enterprises have attempted to construct data warehousing systems for decision-support. Data warehouse is an intelligent store of data that can aggregate vast amounts of information. Building DW requires two important development issues:(i) DW for the decision making of business users and (ii) metadata within it. Most DW development methodologies have not considered metadata development; it is necessary to adopt a DW development methodology which develops a DW and its metadata simultaneously. Metadata is a key to success of data warehousing system and is critical for implementing DW. That is, metadata is crucial documentation for a data warehousing system where users should be empowered to meet their own information needs; users need to know what data exists, what it represents, where it is located, and how to access it. Furthermore, metadata is used for extracting data and managing DW. However, metadata has failed because its management has been segregated from the DW development process. Metadata must be integrated with data warehousing systems. Without metadata, the decision support of DW is under the control of technical users. Therefore, integrating data warehouse with its metadata offers a new opportunity to create a more adaptive information system. Therefore, this paper proposes a DW development methodology from a metadata perspective. The proposed methodology consists of five phases: preparatory, requirement analysis, data warehouse (informational database) development, metastore development, and maintenance.   • To effectively manage research information in the field of national defense, metadata about the information should be managed systematically, and an integrated system to help convergence and management of the information should be implemented based on the metadata. In addition, the system should provide the users with effective integrated search services in a mobile environment, because searching via the use of mobile devices is increasing. The objective of this paper is to suggest a MSISS (Mobile Semantic Integrated Search System), which satisfies the requirements for effective management of the national defense research information. Specifically, we defined national defense research ontologies and national defense research rules after analyzing the Dublin Core metadata and database information of the major military research institutions. We implemented a prototype system for MSISS to demonstrate the use of the ontologies and rules for semantic integrated searching of the military research information. We also presented a triple-based search service to support semantic integrated search in a mobile environment and suggested future mobile semantic integrated search services.

Implementation of a KORMARC/EAD integrated system for the Myongji Digital Library Collections (디지털 도서관 콘텐츠 관리를 위한 KORMARC/EAD 통합시스템 구현)

  • The study designs and implements a KORMARC/EAD integrated system for the Myongji Digital Library Collections. The purpose of this paper is to design the metadata to Myongji Korean History Collections to provide digital information of high quality to clients, and to develop and implement a model for managing digital library collections. In order to test the model and the quality of the derived metadata, we built a metadata management system, which is connected to the existing KORMARC system. The system consists of two modules- a retrieval and an input module. While in the retrieve mode, one can retrieve KORMARC records of books and archival items, with links to modified EAD files for archival items or to image files for books, in the input mode, one can type two types of data such as a catalog data and an inventory data. Finally, we evaluated the proposed system via mail questionnaires, and propose three suggestions to make this system a much more comprehensive and effective system.
