Recently, a variable valve timing system has been widely adopted in internal combustion engine in order to improve the fuel economy and torque at low engine speed. In addition, it is known that varying valve timing according to the various engine operations could reduce exhaust gas, especially NOx, because of residual gas by valve overlap. In this study, to improve the low exhaust gas and fuel economy at part load condition, the residual gas and back flow of exhaust gas due to valve overlap were calculated computationally. Moreover, the characteristics of engine performances and NOx formations were investigated with the experiment of combination of intake and exhaust valve timing condition. Under these various valve operating conditions, the effects of both the positive valve overlap and negative valve overlap(valve underlap) were examined simultaneously. Finally, the characteristics of cyclic THC emission were analyzed by using Fast Response FID(FR-FID) in the cylinder, intake port and exhaust port positions. Besides, the effect of the different gradients of the valve timing change on engine performance was investigated and an optimum control strategy was suggested.
To grasp a feasibility of back fire control by valve overlap period, back fire limit equivalence ratio was estimated with valve overlap period which has the same supply energy and positive intake pressure as valve overlap period $300^{\circ}\;CA$. As the result, it was shown that the smaller valve overlap period has the higher back fire limit equivalence ratio under valve overlap period $300^{\circ}\;CA$ as well as VOP $0^{\circ}\;CA$. This result means that expansion of back fire equivalence ratio by decreasing valve overlap period was caused by decrease of back flow duration of flame from in-cylinder to intake port than decrease of lower supply energy.
For reduction of $CO_2$ emission emitted from combustion engine, the developed nations have been focused on R&D of hybrid electric vehicle. Further more, many automobile companies are researching on various techniques related to engine used in HEV to enhance fuel economy. One of key techniques is miller cycle that control a valve timing to reduce compression stroke for saving energy and increase expansion stroke for high power. In this study, it was investigated the in-cylinder flow characteristics of miller cycle with variable intake valve timing by using the ANSYS simulation code. For simulation, the key analytic parameter defined as intake valve closing timing and cam profile. As main results, it was shown that LIVC cause a lower pressure inside cylinder and had better control turbulence intensity.
Unsteady state free natural gas jets injected from several types of injectors were numerically simulated. Simulations showed good agreements with the schlieren experimental results. Moreover, injections of natural gas in intake manifolds of a single-valve engine and a double-valve engine were predicted as well. Predictions revealed that large volumetric injections of natural gas in intake manifolds led to strong impingement of natural gas with the intake valves, which as a result, gave rise to pronounced backward reflection of natural gas towards the inlets of intake manifolds, together with significant increase in pressure in intake manifold. Based on our simulations, we speculated that for engines with short intake manifolds, reflections of the mixture of natural gas and air were likely to approach the inlets of intake manifolds and subsequently be inbreathed into other cylinders, resulting in non-uniform mixture distributions between the cylinders. For engines with long intake manifolds, inasmuch as the degrees of intake interferences between the cylinders were not identical in light of the ignition sequences, non-uniform intake charge distributions between the cylinders would occur.
Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used test in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very hard to investigate all port and valve shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through two and three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. For this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. There results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the 2-D analysis described the phenomena qualitatively well, and also the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.
In this paper, an intake RCV system for low noise turbo engine was developed through optimization process of a geometric path of compressor housing and an open rate of recirculation valve. At first, the critical customer requirement from voice of customer was defined and quality function deployment of an intake RCV system was executed. And then, the renovative concept design using pugh matrix method was selected as final concept for satisfaction of requirement. Simultaneously, system analysis was carried by function diagram and fishbone diagram. Next, control factors and levels for the optimal design were performed. And, the optimal design of an intake RCV system was studied using design of experiment. Conclusively, we achieved not only cancellation tip-out noise at the driving condition but also improvement of NVH commodity through optimization process of an intake RCV system, which is optimal configuration of compressor housing and recirculation valve.

The unbalance of the power output, noise, and vibration is happened by the disproportionate pressure variation in the cylinder. For this reason, decrease of the pressure in the cylinder and increase of the residual gas effect on the engine performance. If the abnormal combustion is continued, the crack would be occurred in the engine block. And it could be broken down. For the normal combustion of the SI engine, it is important to supply the balanced mixture by each operating condition. In this study, it was tested the combustion characteristics in the cylinder according to the abnormal adjusting of intake & exhaust valve. This test is willing to set a basic data's analysis fur developing an automotive diagnosis system by analyzing the pressure in the cylinder, the output signal of MAP sensor, the exhaust gas, etc.
A comparative evaluation of engine cleanliness was performed on the transport gasoline blended with bio- alcohols, and this study was considered to achieve the aim of greenhouse gas reduction in Korea. In particular, the fuel blended with bio-ethanol and bio-butanol showed the best engine cleaning performance both on combustion chamber deposits and intake valve deposits. The deposit control gasoline additive was effective to remove intake valve deposits. In contrast, the amount of combustion chamber deposits were tend to increase even though fuels blended with bio-alcohols were used. In overall, fuels blended with bio-alcohols, compared to fossil fuels, still showed outstanding performance in terms of engine cleanliness.
