Relationships of Potential Atherogenic Indices to Anthropometric Measurements, Dietary Intake and Dietary Behavior in Korean Obese Children

  • Epidemiological studies have indicated that a relationship between overweight and cardiovascular disease exists. To assess the relationship of unfavorable changes in serum lipid concentrations, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a), blood sugar and blood pressure to anthropometric variables, nutrient intakes and dietary behavior,64 obese children were chosen as subjects and 24-hour dietary intake, dietary behavior as well as blood pressure, apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a), three kinds of cholesterol concentrations were measured in November 1976. More than half(57.8%) of the children had serum cholesterol concentrations over 175mg/d1, and 26.6% of them had over 200mg/d1 and this group could be classified as a high risk group. Abdominal obesity as measured with waist circumference and waist hip ratio was negatively co..elated to high density lipop개tein(HDL) cholesterol. Dietary behavior rather than nutrient intakes appeared to have associations with unfavorable lipid profiles. Total dietary behavior scores and fish and bean product consumption had strong correlations with potentially atherogenic lipoprotein concentrations. This study suggests that fir the early prevention of cardiovascular disease, waist hip ratio together with obese rate should be included in selective programs to identify risk group of children in Korea. furthermore, interventions in cardiovascular disease risk groups in obese children should emphasize maintenance of ideal body weight through reducing body fat and adopting desirable dietary behaviors such as increasing intake of fish or bean products. 여자체조선수의 섭식패턴, 채중조절방법 및 영양섭취상태(제1보) (Eating Pattern, Weight Control Behavior and Nutritional Status in High Level Female Gymnasts)

  • This study was conducted with 20 female gymnasts and 23 age-matched controls to examine pattern, weight control behavior and nutritional status. Most gymnasts(95.0%) reported that they used weight-control methods, while relatively few age-matched controls employed these methods. These methods included sauna(95.0%), food restriction(90.0%), excess exercise (70.0%), laxative abuse(10%) and use of diet pills(10%). Gymnasts had significantly (p<0.05) lower scores for statements related to 'sneaking food', 'vomiting after overeating', showing more negative eating behavior than age-matched controls. Energy intake of gymnasts was 968.9$\pm$421.4kcal while energy expenditure was 2,091$\pm$361kcal, showing negative evergy balance(-1,1225$\pm$534.6kcal). Female gymnasts consumed less than 70% of the RDA for protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, which reflects their low energy intake. The average intakes of calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin did not meet the recommended dietary allowances for their age groups. Adolescent athletes who train vigorously and consume a low-energy diet may be exposed to an increase in potential health risks. Therefore, individuals who advise athletic adolescents regarding training and dietary habits need to emphasize the importance of consuming an appropriate energy intake to support performance as well as growth and development. The sports nutritionist is in a position to convey such information to coaches, physicians, parents and to the athletes themselves.

교대근무자의 카페인 섭취가 수면의 질에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Ingested Caffeine on the Sleep Quality among Shift Workers)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of caffeine intake by shift workers on sleep, considering various variable related to the sleep health of shift workers. Methods: A descriptive survey study was conducted with 128 employees who worked shifts. Respondents were surveyed on their of caffeine intake behavior, schedule type, quality of sleep, health promotion behavior, and occupational stress. Differences in their quality of sleep were assessed using the t-test and analysis of variance, while factors influencing the effect of caffeine intake on the quality of sleep were analyzed using hierarchical logistic regression. Results: The average Pittsburgh Sleep Index, Korean Version score of those surveyed was 7.3±3.25, indicating that their quality of sleep was low. On the other hand, their aveage daily intake of caffeine was 1.6±0.99 cups (1 cup =150 mL) and 116.4±77.58 mg/dL of caffeine. When the various variables that could have affected the quality of sleep were corrected, an increase in the amount of caffeine consumed was found to lead to a decrease in the quality of sleep (p=.015). Conclusion: Caffeine intake by shift workers has a significant bearing on their quality of sleep; therefore, such intake should be adjusted to improve their sleep health.

Dynamic behavior of intake tower considering hydrodynamic damping effect

  • The effect of hydrodynamic damping on intake tower is twofold: one is fluid damping and another is structural damping. Fluid damping can be derived analytically from the governing equation of the fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) problem which yields a very complicated solution. To avoid the complexity of the FSI problem water-tower system can be simplified by considering water as added mass. However, in such a system a reconsideration of structural damping is required. This study investigates the effects of this damping on the dynamic response of the intake tower, where, apart from the "no water (NW)" condition, six other cases have been adopted depending on water height. Two different cross-sections of the tower are considered and also two different damping properties have been used for each case as well. Dynamic analysis has been carried out using horizontal ground motion as input. Finally, the result shows how hydrodynamic damping affects the dynamic behavior of an intake tower with the change of water height and cross-section. This research will help a designer to consider more conservative damping properties of intake tower which might vary depending on the shape of the tower and height of water.

골밀도 검사를 받은 여대생의 골건강증진행위변화에 영향을 미치는 요인 (The Influencing Factors of the Bone Health Promoting Behavioral Change after the Bone Mineral Density Test in College Women)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether college women would change their exercise and milk intake behavior after the bone mineral density (BMD) test, and to understand the influencing factors in the exercise & milk intake behavioral change. Method: A questionnaire survey which assesses the exercise and m ilk intake behavior was carried out to the 194 college women from June, 2007 to August, 2007, then they had BMD test in the distal radius site. One year later, 146 women have done a similar questionnaire including osteoporosis know ledge, osteoporosis self efficacy, exercise and milk efficacy, and their health belief. Results: The group that had begun regular exercises after the BMD test showed the lowest level of BMD and exercise barrier. And the other group that had been taking exercises before the test, showed the highest osteoporosis self efficacy, exercise efficacy and osteoporosis sensitivity. As for the behavioral change related to milk intake, only the group that had started to intake a cup of milk a day showed the lowest BMD. Conclusion: This study shows that the BMD testing can induce the behavioral change of exercise and milk intake in college women.

가솔린기관의 연료분사 시기가 기관성능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Fuel Injection Timing on the Performance Characteristics in an Si Engine)

  • In the sequential MPI system with one injection for each cycle, engine performance is influenced by the mixture conditions. It can be said that engine performance is improved by being better identical mixture formation conditions for all cylinders. As the fuel injection timing to the intake port effects on the mixture formation conditions and the engine performance, injection timing must be better adjusted to engine requirements. Engine behavior was clearly different depending on the injection time during intake storke. Therefore it was studied that injection timing of fuel effects on the engine performance I. e. combustion stability, COV(imep), A/F excursion, CO,HC emission concentration and fuel consumption. It was found that late intake-synchronous injection was deteriorated the combustion characteristics and performance characteristics, while early intake-synchronous infection resulted in favorable engine behavior.

모델에 의한 흡배관내 연료유동의 거동에 관한 실험염구 (An experimental study on the behavior of fuel flow in intake manifold by the model)

  • This paper deals with the experimental study on the behavior of fuel (methanol) in intake manifold by using the basic apparatus which is manufactured the visible straight tube type model. In this study, the new device for liquid film thickness measurement and vaporization rate measurement are introduced to investigate the variation of liquid film thickness along the intake manifold and to observe the effect of vaporization of injected fuel. the results are summarized as follows: 1) The vaporization rate increases in proportion to decreasing of throttle valve angle and growing air fuel ratio. 2) The liquid film thickness along the intake manifold is mostly independent for the throttle valve angle in low air velocity and then affected in high air velocity, but the distribution of the liquid film thickness on circumferential position almost constant in the region of 300mm down stream from carburetor. 3) The mean liquid film thickness is 0.04 - 0.18mm in case of methanol in the region of air velocity Va = 12m/s - 55m/s and decreases with decreasing the throttle valve angle.

일부 중년여성의 건강식품 섭취와 식생활과의 관련성 연구 (The relationship between Intake of Health Foods and Dietary Behavior in Middle-Aged Women)

  • 본 연구는 45~60세 중년 여성을 대상으로 건강식품의 섭취 실태를 파악하고, 건강식품 섭취 여부에 따른 건강행태와 식생활을 조사하여 이들 여성의 건강식품의 섭취와 식생활과의 관련성을 살펴보았다. 조사 대상자의 평균 연령은 49.8세였으며, 현재 건강식품을 섭취하고 있는 대상자 비율이 66.8%로 건강식품 섭취자가 비섭취자 보다 더 많았다. 섭취하고 있는 건강식품은 비타민 및 무기질의 섭취 비율이 가장 높았으며, 섭취 이유로는 영양보충과 질병예방이라고 응답한 비율이 높았다. 건강식품 구입과 관련한 태도에서는 건강 식품 구입 시 영양정보 또는 제품성분, 섭취량, 섭취방법을 잘 확인하고 구입한다고 응답한 비율이 70% 이상으로 높았다. 건강식품 섭취 여부에 따른 평상시 식생활 태도를 분석한 결과, 건강식품 섭취군이 비섭취군에 비해 평상시 식생활 태도의 평균 점수가 유의적으로 높았으며(p < 0.05), 식생활 태도에 대한 탐색적 요인분석을 실시한 결과에서도 추출된 4개의 요인 중 '식품의 절제' 요인에서 섭취군의 점수가 비섭취군에 비해 유의적으로 높았다(p < 0.001). 이상의 결과로 건강식품을 섭취하는 사람들의 식생활 태도가 더 좋으며, 바람직한 식생활과 건강식품의 섭취가 긍정적인 관계에 있는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 건강식품 섭취를 평상시 식생활과 잘 조화를 이루게 한다면 더욱 긍정적인 작용을 할 것으로 기대되며, 이에 중년 여성 자신의 식생활을 올바르게 인식하고 자신에게 적합한 건강식품을 선택할 수 있도록 관련 교육 및 지침이 마련되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.

결혼이주여성의 식생활 적응 및 영양소 섭취실태 (Food adaptation and nutrient intake of female immigrants into Korea through marriage)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate Korean food adaption, eating behavior and dietary intakes of married female immigrants by age, number of residence years in Korea and level of income. The survey included 67 female marriage immigrants attending the Korean language class at the multicultural family support center within the northern part of Kyonggi province from October 2010 to July 2011. General characteristics, Korean dietary life adaptation, and eating behavior were collected and dietary intakes were assessed using 24-hour recall. The home countries with regards to all subjects were Vietnam (40.3%), China (23.9%), Japan (11.9%), Philippines (7.0%), and Mongolia (3.0%). Total energy intake was 1432.5kcal and there were significant differences in nutritional intake concerning vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 by age (p < 0.05). More than 50% of subjects did not meet estimated average requirements for calcium (56.7%), zinc (52.2%), vitamin C (55.2%), and folic acid (76.1%). Food adaptation scores were significantly correlated with general characteristics (age, residence year, drinking alcohol and acquisition of nationality), total scores of eating behavior, and nutritional intake (energy, protein, fat, fiber, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, niacin, vitamin E, and zinc). These results might suggest that the better their Korean food adaptation, the more desirable their eating behavior and nutritional status.

도시와 농촌노인의 식행동, 식품섭취 및 식생활만족도 비교 연구 (Comparisons of dietary behavior, food intake, and satisfaction with food-related life between the elderly living in urban and rural areas)

  • The present study was performed to evaluate dietary behavior, food intake, and satisfaction with food-related life regarding the elderly residing in different regions of Korea. The survey was conducted on 631 individuals over 55 years old in either urban or rural areas. The survey was carried out using a questionnaire including dietary behavior, mini dietary assessment, and a food frequency questionnaire. The average age of the rural elderly was higher than that of the urban elderly whereas, education level and economic status were higher in the urban elderly compared to the rural elderly. The intake of dairy products, meats, instant foods, snacks, and the use of nutrient supplementation were significantly higher in the urban elderly than those of the rural elderly (p = 0.000). The intake of vegetables was significantly higher in the rural elderly (p = 0000). Furthermore, the rural elderly were more satisfied with food-related life and had better balanced diets than those of the urban elderly. Taken together, the results of this study revealed that customized nutritional management and education for adequate meals in different regions should be developed and provided in order to improve the quality of healthy living for the elderly.
