  • This paper investigates the soundness of porcelain insulators associated with the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The AE technique is a popular non-destructive method that measures and analyzes the burst energy that occurs mainly when a crack occurs in a high-frequency region. Typical AE methods require continuous monitoring with frequent sensor calibration. However, in this study, the AE technique excites a porcelain insulator using only an impact hammer, and it applies a high-pass filter to the signal frequency range measured only in the AE sensor by comparing the AE and the acceleration sensors. Next, the extracted time-domain signal is analyzed for the damage assessment. In normal signals, the duration is about 2ms, the area of the envelope is about 1,000, and the number of counts is about 20. In the damage signal, the duration exceeds 5ms, the area of the envelope is about 2,000, and the number of counts exceeds 40. In addition, various characteristics in the time and frequency domain for normal and damage cases are analyzed using the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Based on the results of the STFT analysis, the maximum energy of a normal specimen is less than 0.02, while in the case of the damage specimen, it exceeds 0.02. The extracted high-frequency components can present dynamic behavior of crack regions and eigenmodes of the isolated insulator parts, but the presence, size, and distribution of cracks can be predicted indirectly. In this regard, the characteristics of the surface crack region were derived in this study.

  • This study proposes a crack identification algorithm to analyze the surface condition of porcelain insulators and to efficiently visualize cracks. The proposed image processing algorithm for crack identification consists of two primary steps. In the first step, the brightness is eliminated by converting the image to the lab color space. Then, the background is removed by the K-means clustering method. After that, the optimum image treatment is applied using morphological image processing and median filtering to remove unnecessary noise, such as blobs. In the second step, the preprocessed image is converted to grayscale, and any cracks present in the image are identified. Next, the region properties, such as the number of pixels and the ratio of the major to the minor axis, are used to separate the cracks from the noise. Using this image processing algorithm, the precision of crack identification for all the sample images was approximately 80%, and the F1 score was approximately 70. Thus, this method can be helpful for efficient crack monitoring.

  • This paper introduces the data processing method and the measurement of the leakage current flowing through polymer insulators. For ageing diagnosis of polymer insulator, data aquisition system was developed to record the leakage current of insulator being tested. Hence, we have gained information for life time from its leakage current. the DAS is protected against over-voltage which would develop in the event of a flashover of the test sample.

  • Silicone rubber is being used for the housing material of outdoor high voltage insulators such as composite insulator, bushing, surge arrestor and cable terminator because of good tracking and erosion resistance, good hydrophobicity and recovery of hydrophobicity, and chemical stability. In this paper, tracking and erosion resistance of silicone rubber having fluids and different ATH contents were examined. Fluids were selected under the consideration of their molecular weight and chemical structure, expecting the high migration rate, the good pollutant encapsulation, and the long period with good hydrophobicity. Good tracking and erosion resistance and arc resistance have been achieved for the silicone rubber above ATH content 130 phr.

  • In seashore, outdoor insulators are polluted due to salty wind and the pollution causes the flashover and failure of electric equipments. As well known, the pollution has a close relation with meteorological factors such as wind velocity, precipitation, wind direction, relative humidity, dew point, etc. In this paper we statistically analyzed the correlation between the pollution and the meteorological factors including snowfall and freezing. The multiple regression analysis was used for the statistical analysis; daily measured equivalent salt deposit density(dependent variable) and the meteorological data(independent variable) were used. From the results of this investigation, we verified the influence of snowfall and freezing on the ESDD, which has been overlooked in the preceding investigation.

  • To improve dielectric and mechanical properties of insulating composite by plasma surface treatment, new plasma surface treatment process is designed with concentric and hemi-circle electrodes system, the plasma, which is generated between anode and cathode, is induced to the upper side of the electrode system and treats the surface of the insulators. The optimal surface treatment condition is that pressure : 0.5[torr], flux density 100[gauss], discharge current : 500[mA] and treatment time : 3 minutes. The composite filled with glass cloth surface-treated by plasma shows the improvement in electric and mechanical properties, comparing non- and coupling agent-treated samples.

  • Nano-structured carbon nitride $(CN_x)$ films were prepared by reactive RF magnetron sputtering with a DC bias at various deposition conditions, and the physical and electrical properties were investigated. FTIR spectrum indicated an ${alpha}C_3N_4$ peak in the films. The carbon nitride film deposited on Si substrate had a nano-structured surface morphology. The grain size was about 20 nm and the deposition rate was $1.7{\mu}m/hr$. When the $N_2/Ar$ ratio was 3/7, the level of nitrogen incorporation was 34.3 at%. The film had a low dielectric constant. The metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors that the carbon nitride was deposited as insulators, exhibited a typical C-V characteristics.

  • At present, Kyungbu high-speed railway is operated with 300km/h, Honam high-speed railway is being constructed with 350km/h, and the development for the overhead contact line system is to be conducted for the next-generation high-speed railway with the speed of 400km/h. It is necessary to set up the specification and criteria for the key parts such as dropper, termination clamp and tension insulator for the 400km/h railway line. In this paper, the specification and the criteria for dropper, termination clamp and tension insulator has been reviewed and proposed in order to secure long-term reliability and stability under the maximum speed of 400km/h. Also, the specification, criteria and international standards for 300km/h class and 350km/h class railway line system and the international standards related with the insulators have been reviewed, compared and analysed.
