To prevent an insulator failure, an automatic cleaning and inspection robot was developed for suspension insulator strings. The robot autonomously moves along the insulator string using the clamps installed on its two moving frames. Especially, unlike the existing cleaning robots using jets of water, the robot system adopts a dry cleaning method using rotating brushes and a circular motion guide. In addition, a mechanized brush bristles and a voltage-balancing contactor are devised to increase cleaning efficiency and to prevent arc generation under live-line conditions, respectively. We confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

A new cleaning robot system for live-line tension insulator string was developed to prevent an insulator failure, which can have severe effects on national security as well as national industry and economy. The robot moves along the insulator string using the clamps installed on its two moving frames. Especially, unlike the existing cleaning robots using jets of water or water/air, the robot system adopts dry cleaning method using a rotating brush and a circular motion guide. This robot system has control architecture consisting of a master control unit and two slave control units. We confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.
Power transmission lines have been playing a key role as the mainstay of national industry. When a power failure occurs, it can have severe effects on national security as well as national industry and economy. In this paper, we consider an insulator failure, which is one of the main causes of such a power failure. In spite of its importance, however, a shortage of manpower in the insulator maintenance field is getting more serious due to working environments with a high voltage and a high place. For this reason, a new active maintenance technique using a robot system is required to prevent such an insulator failure. In this paper, a new robot mechanism for insulator cleaning and inspection was developed. We confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

In order to optimize the characteristics of gate insulator for FED(field emission device), we investigated the effect of wet-etching process on the gate insulator for fabrication of FED. We used the general three types of etchants for fabrication of the metal tip FEA(field emitter array), they are MO and oxide etchants to form the gate hole, and Al etchant to remove the release layer. In the result of the breakdown field of the insulator by the measure of the current-voltage characteristics, the breakdown field of insulator for immersing in oxide etchant was rapidly lowering with increasing etching time, but that for immersing in Al etchant was slow lowering. Also, in comparing cleaning with non-cleaning samples, the breakdown field of the cleaning samples was higher than that of non-cleaning samples.
Suspension insulator in Catenary Trolley Wire Systems must have two characteristics, electric insulation and mechanical endurance. Because suspension insulator is used in supporting and insulating position between power supply parts and earth conducted supporting parts. The insulator's electric characteristics can be influenced by surface pollution and damage from the environment such as humidity, dust, smoke, salt. etc. And, the insulating parts can be electrically short. These electrically damaged insulator can cause serious accidents that have far-reaching effect. So appropriate management basis of suspension insulator is needed. And we present appropriate cleaning and the changing period of suspension insulator on the basis of actual data.

This paper was carried out to estimate pollution levels of various insulators in tunnel and establish cleaning period in each tunnel section. We estimate pollution level that is attached to insulators in environmental pollution area, industrial area, salt damage area. These results that the pollution quantity and conductivity were increased by pollution accumulation period. However, the conductivity showed each other big difference in each tunnel. In particular, the conductivity showed big in environmental pollution(tunnel A) and salt damage(tunnel C) area, It is considered to prevent accident that manage establishing periodic state of cleaning plan. Also, the Grease that spread on the insulator surface in existing is considered that it can prevent accident for long-term by restrain use.

For the improvement of the anti-fouling features of porcelain electrical insulators, in this study, the surface of an insulator was coated with a functional material to expand the insulator's self-cleanness. The anti-fouling and mechanical features of the functional film coating of ceramic substrates made from components like an electrical insulator were analyzed. The coating methods that were used were spray coating, dip coating, and fabric coating. Following the coating, the contact angle of the coated surface was measured, revealing that the spray coating method offered the lowest angle ($13.7^{\circ}$) and a strong hydrophilic feature. The anti-fouling analysis showed that the anti-fouling features improved as the contact angle decreased. The mechanical properties - hardness and adhesion - were both excellent at 9H and 5B, respectively, regardless of the coating method that was used.

Because of the low pollution resistance of the porcelain electrical insulator itself, in this work the anti-pollution performance of insulator was improved by using the functional coating. The ceramic substrates that components were same as the porcelain electrical insulator were used in this experiment. The functional films were coated on the ceramic substrate by using a spray coating method, and then the coated substrate were annealed under different coating condition such as natural curing and annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. Then, the contact angles of the coated surfaces were measured and the minimum angle ($8.3^{\circ}$) was obtained at $400^{\circ}C$. The anti-contamination properties were measured, revealing that as the contact angle decreased, the anti-contamination properties improved. The hardness and adhesion were small at the natural curing condition however the excellent mechanical properties were obtained under higher temperature annealing.
