  • Dipole model based analytical expression is proposed to estimate the length and depth of the rectangular defect on ferromagnetic pipe. Among the three leakage profiles of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL), radial and axial leakage profiles are considered in this work. Permeability variation of the specimen is ignored by considering the flux density as close to saturation level of the inspected specimen. Comparing the profile of both the components, radial leakage profile furnishes the better estimation of defect parameter. This is evident from the results of error percentage of length and depth of the defect. Normalized pattern of the proposed analytical model radial leakage profile is good agreement with the experimentally obtained profile support the performance of proposed expression.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for GBSB (generalized brain-state-in-a-box) based associative memories. Based on the theoretical investigation about the properties of GBSB, we parameterize the solution space utilizing the limited number of parameters sufficient to represent the solution space and appropriate to be searched. Next we formulate the problem of finding a GBSB that can store the given pattern as stable states in the form of constrained optimization problems. Finally, we transform the constrained optimization problem into a SDP(semidefinite program), which can be solved by recently developed interior point methods. The applicability of the proposed method is illustrated via design examples.

  • This paper describes how the directivity pattern of the scattered sound pressure is distributed when a plane acoustic wave is incident on a rigid or soft spherical shell underwater. A coupled Finite Element-Boundary Element method is developed as a numerical technique. The result of the coupled FE-BE method is agreed with theoretical solution for algorithmic confirmation.

  • Deep-water sonar transducers of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type have been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The proposed sonar transducers are composed of piezoelectric ceramic tubes and structural steel materials for simple fabrication. In order to have an omnidirectional beam pattern around 30kHz, a conic steel is placed below a piezoelectric tube or a steel disc is placed between two piezoelectric tubes. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Various results are available such as directivity patterns and transmitting voltage responses. The most optimal structure and dimensions of the steel material were calculated, so that the beam patterns of the sonar transducers had +/- 3dB omnidirectivity at 30kHz.

  • Metastable phase characteristics of beta Ti alloys were investigated to consider the relationship of the microstructure and diffraction pattern in TEM. TEM analysis showed that the microstructure was mottled as a modulated structure, and the diffraction pattern was composed of spot streaks between the main spots of a stable beta phase with a specific lattice relationship. The modulated structure may be induced by short distance slip or atom movement during a very short interval of solution treated and quenched (STQ) materials. The athermal ${\omega}$ phase, which could be precipitated at low temperature aging, is also analysed by the metastable phase. The metastable phases including athermal ${\omega}$ phase had a common characteristic of hardened and brittle behavior because the dislocation slip was restricted by a super lattice effect due to short distance atom movement at the metastable state.

  • In modern society, various digital communication equipments are being used due to the influence of the 4th industrial revolution, and accordingly, interest in removing noise generated in the data transmission process is increasing. In this paper, we propose a filtering algorithm to remove AWGN generated during digital image transmission. The proposed algorithm removes noise based on mask matching to preserve information such as the boundary of an image, and uses pixel values with similar patterns according to the pattern of the input pixel value and the surrounding pixels for output calculation. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we simulated with existing AWGN removal algorithms, and analyzed using enlarged image and PSNR comparison. The proposed algorithm has superior AWGN removal performance compared to the existing method, and is particularly effective in images with strong noise intensity of AWGN.

  • X-ray diffraction method has been widely used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of a mixture of materials since every crystalline material gives a unique X-ray diffraction pattern independently of others, with the intensity of each pattern proportional to that material's concentration in a mixture. For determination of mixing ratios, extracting source spectra correctly is important and crucial. Based on the source spectra extracted, a regression model with non-negativity constraint is applied for determining mixing ratios. In some mixtures, however, X-ray diffraction spectrum has sharp and narrow peaks, which may result in partial negative source spectrum from independent component analysis. We propose several procedures of extracting non-negative source spectra and determining mixing ratios. The proposed method is validated with experimental data on powder mixtures.

  • This paper proposes an isolated bidirectional three-phase push-pull dc-dc converter for high power application such as eco-friendly vehicles, renewable energy systems, energy storage systems, and solid-state transformers. The proposed converter achieves ZVS turn-on of all switches and volume of passive components is small by an effect of three-phase interleaving. The proposed converter has identical switching pattern for both boost and buck mode, and therefore can provide seamless characteristic at the mode transition. A 3kW prototype of the proposed converter has been built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed operation.

  • Since the beginning of the 21st century, the emergence of innovative technologies made further advances in minimal access surgery possible. Robotic surgery and telepresence surgery effectively addressed the limitations of laparoscopic procedures, thus revolutionizing minimal access surgery. Surgical robots provide surgeons with to technologically advanced vision and hand skills. As a result, such systems are expected to revolutionize the field of surgery. In that time, much progress has been made in integrating robotic technologies with surgical instrumentation. However, robotic surgery will not only require special training, but it will also change the existing surgical training pattern and reshape the learning curve by offering new solutions, such as robotic surgical simulators and robotic telementoring. This article provides an introduction to medical robotic technologies, develops a possible classification, reviews the evolution of a surgical robot, and discusses future prospects for innovation. In the future, surgical robots should be smaller, less expensive, easier to operate, and should seamlessly integrate emerging technologies from a number of different fields. We believe that, in the near future as robotic technology continues to develop, almost all kinds of endoscopic surgery will be performed by this technology.

  • A reseach was peformed to develop composite pressure vessels in conjunction with design, fabrication, and test. Fiber pattern and angels were decided by CADFIL software and they were [$liner/15^{\circ}/15^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/18^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/21^{\circ}/21^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$]. Fabrication of bottles were done by 5-axis filament winding machine. During fabrication fiber optic sensors were embedded to measure the strain at points when internal pressure was applied by water pump. Conventional strain gage instrumentation showed the stable test results. The test results were compared to finite element analysis results and they were close each other in strain values. One can see the successful design and fabrication of single boss composite vessels.
