VLIW architecture capable of testing multiple conditions in a cycle must support an efficient mechanism for multi-way branches. This paper proposes a mechanism to speed up the execution of multi-way branches and an efficient memory packing method of instructions, which reduced the wasted memory space. Also, we develops a new compiler technique which can transform program segments that are not applied to multi-way branches into ones that are applied to multi-way branches. The benefits gained by the transformation are to reduce branch penalty and to increase instruction-level parallelism.
In the past, a patient went to the room where an ultrasound image diagnosis device was set, and then he or she was examined by a doctor. However, currently a doctor can go and examine the patient with a handheld ultrasound device who stays in a room. However, it was implemented with only fundamental functions, and can not meet the high performance required by the focusing algorithm of ultrasound beam which determines the quality of ultrasound image. In addition, low energy consumption was satisfied for the mobile ultrasound device. To satisfy these requirements, this paper proposes a high-performance and low-power single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) based multi-core processor that supports a representative beamforming algorithm out of several focusing methods of mobile ultrasound image signals. The proposed SIMD multi-core processor, which consists of 16 processing elements (PEs), satisfies the high-performance required by the beamforming algorithm by exploiting considerable data-level parallelism inherent in the echo image data of ultrasound. Experimental results showed that the proposed multi-core processor outperforms a commercial high-performance processor, TI DSP C6416, in terms of execution time (15.8 times better), energy efficiency (6.9 times better), and area efficiency (10 times better).
Conditional branches can severely limit the performance of instruction level parallelism by causing branch penalties. 2-level adaptive branch predictors were developed to get accurate branch prediction in high performance superscalar processors. Although 2 level adaptive branch predictors achieve very high prediction accuracy, they tend to be very costly. In this paper, set-associative cached correlated 2-level branch predictors are proposed to overcome the cost problem in conventional 2-level adaptive branch predictors. According to simulation results, cached correlated predictors deliver higher prediction accuracy than conventional predictors at a significantly lower cost. The best misprediction rates of global and local cached correlated predictors using set-associative caches are 5.99% and 6.28% respectively. They achieve 54% and 17% improvements over those of the conventional 2-level adaptive branch predictors.
SVLIW processor architectures can resolve resource collisions and data dependencies between the instructions while scheduling VLIW instructions at run-time. As a result, long NOP word instructions can be removed from the object code produced for the processor. Thus, the occurrence of cache misses on the SVLIW processor would be lesser than that on the same cache size VLIW processor. Less frequent cache misses on the SVLIW processor would incur less frequent memory access, and thus, the total execution cycles to complete an application would be shortened compared with cases on the VLIW processor. Such a feature eventually compromises effects of longer instruction pipeline stages than those of the VLIW processor. In this paper, we formulate and compare two execution cycle models of the two architectures. A simulation results show that the longer memory access cycles when cache miss occurs, the total execution cycles of SVLIW processor would be shorter than those of VLIW processor.
We propose a new hybrid value predictor which achieves high performance by combining several predictors. Because the proposed hybrid value predictor can update the prediction table speculatively, it efficiently reduces the number of mispredicted instructions due to stale data. Also, the proposed predictor can enhance the prediction accuracy and efficiently decrease the hardware cost of predictor, because it allocates instructions into the best-suited predictor during instruction fetch stage by using the information of static classification which is obtained from the profile-based compiler implementation. For the 16-issue superscalar processors, simulation results based on the SimpleScalar/PISA tool set show that we achieve the average prediction rates of 73% by using speculative update and the average prediction rates of 88% by adding static classification for the SPECint95 benchmark programs.
Abstract This research presents a novel analytic model to predict the instruction execution rate of superscalar processors using the queuing model with finite-buffer size and synchronous operation mode. The proposed model is also able to analyze the performance relationship between cache and pipeline. The proposed model takes into account various kinds of architectural parameters such as instruction-level parallelism, branch probability, the accuracy of branch prediction, cache miss, and etc.. To prove the correctness of the model, we performed extensive simulations and compared the results with the analytic model. Simulation results showed that the proposed model can estimate the average execution rate accurately within 10% error compared to simulation results. The proposed model can explain the causes of performance bottleneck which cannot be uncovered by the simulation method only. The model is also able to show the effect of the cache miss on the performance of out-of-order issue superscalar processors, which can provide an valuable information in designing a balanced system.
VLIW architecture has emerged as one of the most effective architectures in dealing with multimedia applications. In multimedia applications, there is ample potential for parallelizing the execution of multiple operations because such applications typically have data intensive processing which often has limited data and/or control dependencies. As the degree of instruction-level parallelism increases, non-clustered VLIW architectures scale poorly because of the tremendous register port pressure. Therefore, clustered VLIW architecture is definitely preferred over non-clustered VLIW architecture when a higher degree of parallelizing is possible as in the case of multimedia processing However, having multiple clusters in an architecture implies that the amount of hardware is quite large, and therefore, power consumption becomes a very crucial issue. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to minimize the peak power consumption without incurring little or no delay penalty. The effectiveness of our algorithm has been verified by various sets of experiments, and up to 30.7% reduction in the peak power consumption is observed compared with the results that is optimized to minimize resources only.
SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) algorithm is the most frequently executing routine in motion estimation, which is the most demanding process in motion picture encoding. To enhance the performance of motion picture encoding on a VLIW processor, an optimal implementation of SAD algorithm on VLIW processor should be accomplished. In this paper, we propose an implementation of optimal scheduling of SAD algorithm with conditional branch on a VLIW-based high performance DSP. We first transform the nested loop with conditional branch of SAD algorithm into a single loop with conditional branch which has a large enough loop body to utilize fully the ILP capability of VLIW DSP and has a conditional branch to make the escape from loop to be achieved as soon as possible. And then we apply a modulo scheduling technique to the transformed single loop. We test the proposed implementation on TMS320C6713, and analyze the code size and performance with respect to processing time. Through experiments, it is shown that the SAD implementation proposed in this paper has small code size appropriate for embedded applications, and the H.263 encoder with the proposed SAD implementation performs better than other H.263 encoder with other SAD implementations.
Speculative execution for improving instruction-level parallelism is widely used in high-performance processors. In the speculative execution technique, the most important factor is the accuracy of branch predictor. Unfortunately, complex branch predictors for improving the accuracy can cause serious thermal problems in 3D multicore processors. Thermal problems have negative impact on the processor performance. This paper analyzes two methods to solve the thermal problems in the branch predictor of 3D multi-core processors. First method is dynamic thermal management which turns off the execution of the branch predictor when the temperature of the branch predictor exceeds the threshold. Second method is thermal-aware branch predictor placement policy by considering each layer's temperature in 3D multi-core processors. According to our evaluation, the branch predictor placement policy shows that average temperature is $87.69^{\circ}C$, and average maximum temperature gradient is $11.17^{\circ}C$. And, dynamic thermal management shows that average temperature is $89.64^{\circ}C$ and average maximum temperature gradient is $17.62^{\circ}C$. Proposed branch predictor placement policy has superior thermal efficiency than the dynamic thermal management. In the perspective of performance, the proposed branch predictor placement policy degrades the performance by 3.61%, while the dynamic thermal management degrades the performance by 27.66%.
