  • This paper presents the design of high speed bit and word processor for sequence logic control using a FPGA. This FPGA is able to execute sequence instruction during program fetch cycle, because the program memory was separated from the data memory for high speed execution at 40MHz clock. Also this processor has 274 instructions set with a 32bit fixed width, so instruction decoding time and data memory interface time was reduced. This FPGA was synthesized by V600EHQ240 and Foundation tool of Xilinx company. The final simulation was successfully performed under Foundation tool simulation environment. And the FPGA programmed by VHDL for a 240 pin HQFP package. Finally the benchmark was performed to prove that the designed for bit and word processor has better performance than Q4A of Mitsubishi for the sequence logic control.

  • What is good instruction? The term "instruction" means the essential activity of school education, a precondition for good school, and the starting point of reforming school education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of "good instruction" by examining the difference of perception between in-service teachers and pre-service teachers who encompass the viewpoint of both teacher and student using open-ended questionnaires asking the type of instruction that they have to avoid and the undesirable instruction. This study was carried out with 150 teachers who were working in the schools and 160 students who were in college of education to be teacher in the future. Collected data was analyzed using the QSR Nvivo qualitative program. The findings of this study indicates the followings: First, the most undesirable class cited by in-service teachers was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, followed by class based on directions instruction, unsystematic class, class characterized by lack of teaching competency, class that emphasizes test scores and competition, class that are not interactive enough, class that does not consider the level of students, class in which students are not respected, class that have poor educational environment, and the class in which little support is provided. Second, the most undesirable class cited by pre-service teachers was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, followed by unsystematic class, class characterized by lack of teaching competency, class based on directions instruction, class in which students are not respected, class that emphasizes test scores and competition, class that does not consider the level of students, class that are not interactive enough, class that have poor educational environment, and the class in which little support is provided. Third, this study examined the difference of perception between in-service teachers and pre-service teachers toward the undesirable class that they have to avoid. In terms of the integrated rank that is common among in-service teachers and pre-service teachers, the most undesirable class that they have to avoid was the class that applies uniform instructional strategy, unsystematic class, class based on directions instruction, and class characterized by lack of teaching competency. The findings of this study may be used as a basis for in-service teachers to reflect on their professionalism of instruction that they provide and examine the attitude of students toward instruction, while providing a practical guideline for pre-service teachers to design and ensure systematic instruction in the future.

  • This study investigated the influence of an explicit and reflective modeling instruction on the metamodeling knowledge of fourth-graders. Two fourth-grade classes in an elementary school in Seoul were selected and each class was assigned to an experimental group and a control group, respectively. The experimental group was engaged in explicit and reflective modeling instruction, whereas the control group was engaged in implicit modeling instruction. The two groups were surveyed before and after instruction on the basis of five metamodeling knowledge categories: definition, purpose, design/construction, changeability, and multiplicity. The experimental group showed positive changes in model's meaning, examples, purpose, changeability as well as multiplicity. In contrast, fewer students in the control group understood the meaning of the model and modeling. They also showed limited changes in their understandings with regards to the modeling instruction, and could not expand their understanding of the nature of model and modeling. The findings indicate that an explicit and reflective modeling instruction has positive influence on elementary students' metamodeling knowledge.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of Semantic Network Program (SNP) instruction on learning achievement and motivation in high school biology classes. For this study, a SNP was designed by applying the recommendations in regard to student attention and satisfaction factors in Keller's ARCS theory. SNP instruction was conducted with an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 62 high school biology class student. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The pre-test was used to analyze the learning achievement test, learning motivation test, and semantic forming test. For 4 weeks the experiment group was instructed using the developed SNP which centered on Keller's attention and satisfaction factors, and the control group was instructed via teacher-centered lectures based on the textbook. It was found that SNP instruction efficiently increased students' biology learning achievement (p<.001). It was also discovered that SNP instruction was effective in increasing Keller's motivation strategies on attention and satisfaction factors (p<.001). In addition, SNP instruction positively affected students' semantic formation (p<.001) and learning content retention (p>.05) in the heredity unit by aiding students in the area of active multimedia learning. An in depth interview with students in the class using SNP instruction showed that material learned via this method in biology had longer retention of problem-solving methods. Consequently, SNP instruction according to motivation strategies may high school biology teachers with meaningful teaching-learning methods strategies for the unit on heredity.

  • This paper proposes an efficient loop accelerator for a motion estimation specific instruction-set processor. ME algorithms in nature contain complex and multiple loop operations. To support efficient hardware (HW) loop operations, this paper introduces four loop instructions and their specific HW architecture. The simulation results show that the proposed loop accelerator can reduce about 29% average instruction cycles for ME early-termination schemes compared with typical implementation having a combination of compare and conditional jump instructions. The proposed loop accelerator of the motion estimation specific instruction-set processor can significantly reduce the number of program memory accesses and greatly save power consumption. Hence, it can be quite suitable for low power and flexible ME implementation.

  • A research problem for this study is formulated: "Is practical reasoning instruction effective on raising problem solving ability?" This study is a quasi-experimental study with independent variable of practical reasoning instruction and dependent variable of problem solving ability. Six class hours of experimental input for the 'Housing space' is implemented for an experimental group. T-test results show that practical reasoning instruction is effective on total problem solving ability whereas is not effective on 'implementing alternative action' sub-area of problem solving. This study suggests for the future studies to systematically design practical reasoning classes in consider of appropriate class times and sub-areas of problem solving. Input of an experienced teacher of practical reasoning is also recommended to generalize the results of the experimental study.
