  • In this Paper, a new method is proposed to identify a modulation method in the case of unknown digitally modulated input signals. The proposed identification method is implemented with an artificial neural network which is based on characteristic features extracted from the instantaneous amplitude, the instantaneous phase and the instantaneous frequency of the input signals. The proposed method was simulated with 8 type signals in a noisy communication environment. The results show that the artificial neural network can accurately recognize all kinds of patterns.

  • For the diagnosis of arrhythmia in the heart system, the QRS complex of ECG signals is used in many cases. The rejection of the noise in ECG signals is important to acquisition of exact QRS complex. This paper presents some experimental results about instantaneous bandwidth estimation and noise rejection of ECG signals with the purpose of rejection of the 60 Hz power noise and the motion artifacts such as EMG signals and contact noise. ECG signals corrupted by noise are cleaned by using the variable bandwidth filter. For the filtering of ECG signals with noise, the instantaneous bandwidth of the signals is estimated by analysis of time-frequency representation of ECG signal.

  • The reflectometry for locating the fault at a cable is the same as a problem estimating the time delay between the incident and the reflected signals. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the time delay between the two signals. The proposed method is based on the modeling of the Gaussian enveloped linear chirp signal in the Gaussian noise environment. The phase and the instantaneous frequency of the received signal are estimated by linear Kalman filtering. From the estimated instantaneous frequency, we can measure the time interval between the center frequencies of the incident and the reflected signals. The time interval is the same as the time delay between the incident and the reflected signals. In a simulation assuming that the cable has open fault at the end of the cable, the proposed method showed a good result in estimating the time delay.

  • An engineer prefers DIFM receiver which is superior to instantaneous response rather than superheterodyne receiver which has a scan rate in normal wide band receiver designing. But DIFM receiver has weak point in sensitivity and continuous wave signal because of special environments. In this paper we propose the method which is certificated through simulation and prototype testing to improve sensitivity of DIFM receiver. And we analyze the important factors of DIFM receiver from our results.

  • In this study, we experimentally investigated that the optimization of pulsating jet to reduce the separated flow region behind the vertical fence. The vertical fence was submerged in the turbulent boundary layer in the circulating water channel and we applied phase averaged PIV method to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. One cycle of pulsating jet is divided into 20 phases and grabbed total 200 instantaneous velocity fields at each phase. The experiments were performed by varying the frequency, maximum jet velocity and the shape of pulsating jet wave. Pulsating jet was precisely made by piston-type pump controlled by the computer. The obtained results were compared with normal fence flow. From this study, we found there is the specific frequency which is effective in reducing the reattachment region.

  • The parallel inverter is popularly used because of its fault-tolerance capability, high-current outputs at constant voltages and system modularity. The conventional parallel inverter usually employes active and reactive power control or frequency and voltage droop control. However, these approaches have the disadvantages that the response time of parallel inverter control is slow against load and system parameter variation to calculate active, reactive power, frequency and voltage. This paper describes a novel control scheme for power equalization in parallel connected inverter. The proposed scheme has a fast power balance control response, a simplicity of implementation, and inherent peak current limiting capability since it employes a instantaneous current/voltage control with output voltage and current balance and output voltage regulation. A design procedure for the proposed parallel inverter controller is presented. Futhermore, the proposed control scheme is verified through the simulation in various cases such as the system parameter variation, the control parameter variation and the nonlinear load condition.

  • This special issue focuses on Smart Tuned Mass Dampers (STMD) that are either active or smart or semi-active in nature. Active tuned mass dampers or active mass dampers have found wide acceptance and have been implemented in many tall buildings and long span bridges. Recently researchers have developed a new class of smart tuned mass dampers using either variable stiffness and/or variable damping to effect the change in instantaneous frequency and damping. Since tuning plays a central role in STMDs it is of great current interest thus the topic of this special issue. Discussions of recent active and smart TMD implementations in tall buildings and bridges are also included.

  • This paper proposed a structural time-varying damage detection method by using synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. The instantaneous frequencies of a structure with time-varying damage are first extracted using the synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. Since the proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform is invertible, thus each individual component can be reconstructed and the modal participation factor ratio can be extracted based on the amplitude of the analytical signals of the reconstructed individual components. Then, the new time-varying damage index is defined based on the extracted instantaneous frequencies and modal participation factor ratio. Both free and forced vibrations of a classical Duffing nonlinear system and a simply supported beam structure with abrupt and linear time-varying damage are simulated. The proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform method can successfully extract the instantaneous frequencies of the damaged structures under free vibration or vibration due to earthquake excitation. The results also show that the defined time-varying damage index can effectively track structural time-varying damage.
