An algorithm is proposed for estimating dynamic displacements of a bridge by using FBG sensors and by superposing some measurable low modes. Modal displacements are obtained from the beam theory and the generalized coordinates are deduced from the strains measured by FBG sensors. By considering flexural and torsional modes occurred in bridges only as flexural modes of a simply supported beam by separating a bridge into multiple girders or parts, the proposed algorithm can be applied to various types of bridges. Guidelines are provided theoretically for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used. The proposed algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on various types of bridges, laboratory experiments on a model bridge, and field tests on a simple span PC Box girder bridge. Through the simulation study, the effects of the error in the vibration modes and measurement noise on estimating the dynamic displacements are analyzed.

Asian Dust is a meteorological phenomenon that sand particles are raised from the arid and semi-arid regions-Taklamakan Desert, Gobi Desert and Inner Mongolia in China-and transported by westerlies and deposited on the surface. Asian dust results in a negative effect on human health as well as environmental, social and economic aspects. For monitoring of Asian Dust, Korea Meteorological Administration operates 29 stations using a continuous ambient particulate monitor. Kim et al. (2016) developed an automatic quality check (AQC) algorithm for objective and systematic quality check of observed PM10 concentration and evaluated AQC with results of a manual quality check (MQC). The results showed the AQC algorithm could detect abnormal observations efficiently but it also presented a large number of false alarms which result from valid error check. To complement the deficiency of AQC and to develop an AQC system which can be applied in real-time, AQC has been modulated. Based on the analysis of instrument status codes, valid error check process was revised and 6 status codes were further considered as normal. Also, time continuity check and spike check were modified so that posterior data was not referred at inspection time. Two-year observed PM10 concentration data and corresponding MQC results were used to evaluate the modulated AQC compared to the original AQC algorithm. The results showed a false alarm ratio decreased from 0.44 to 0.09 and the accuracy and the probability of detection were conserved well in spite of the exclusion of posterior data at inspection time.

The paper presents a signal-based damage detection algorithm of ARX model using dynamic acceleration data. An ARX model correlates acceleration data measured at two locations in a structure by considering those two sets of data as input and output signals. For detecting damage, the error between the measured data and the predicted response from the defined ARX model is computed in time and used for a statistical evaluation. A normal distribution function from the error in time is constructed and its statistical characteristic values are used for the evaluation of damage. By comparing the normal distribution functions before and after damage, three different types of damage indices are proposed. The efficiency and limitation of the proposed algorithm with the statistical evaluation of damage indices have been examined and discussed through laboratory experiments.

Prestressed concrete girder bridge has been one of the most widely used bridges in the world because of its excellent construction feasibility, economic efficiency, serviceability, and safety. In certain situations, the prestressing tendon is supposed to be bent by the construction error and the radius of curvature at the continuous joint of PSC girders, and this leads to the loss of prestressing force. However, this kind of prestress loss is not considered in the design and construction processes. This study proves that the prestress loss occurs at the continuous joint due to the local bending of tendon by the construction error or the radius of curvature. Also, a method that can reduce this type of prestress loss is proposed, and proved by the experiment. The result shows that maximum 10% of prestress loss occurs at the continuous joint and the proposed block-out method can reduce the prestress loss ratio by maximum 5%, approximately. This means that the block-out method can enhance the prestressing efficiency of continuous PSC girder bridges.

Estimating moving vehicle loads is important in modeling design loads for bridge design and construction. The paper proposes a moving force identification algorithm using moment influence lines measured at multi-axes. Density estimation function was applied to estimate more than two wheel loads when estimated load values fluctuated severely. The algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on a simple-span plate-girder bridge. Influences of measurement noise and error in velocity on the identification results were investigated in the simulation study. Also, laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the algorithm. The load identification capability was dependent on the type and speed of moving loads, but the developed algorithm could identify loads within 10% error in maximum.

This study aimed to develop a Structural Health Monitoring System for steel beams in the manner of suggesting and verifying a theoretical formula for displacement estimation using strain gauges, and estimating the loading points and magnitude. According to the results of this study, it was found that when a load of 160kN (56% of the yield load) was applied, the error rate of the deflection obtained with a strain gauge at the point of maximum deflection compared to the deflection measured with a displacement meter was within 2%, and that the estimates of the magnitude and points of load application also showed the error rate of not more than 1%. This suggests that the displacement and load of steel beams can be measured with strain gauges and further, it will enable more cost-effective sensor designing without displacement meter or load cell. The Structural Health Monitoring System program implemented in Lab VIEW gave graded warnings whenever the measured data exceeds the specified range (strength limit state, serviceability limit state, yield strain), and both the serviceability limit state and strength limit state could be simultaneously monitored with strain gauge alone.

This study established a BIM procedure considering manufacturing errors in the production process, and evaluated the flexural ductility of precast all-lightweight aggregate concrete special shear walls (PLASWs) with spliced sleeve technique. In the production process, the concrete cover thickness of PALSW was on average 1.28 times greater than the cross-sectional details of the specimen modeled with Revit BIM program. In particular, the bending inner radius of the hoop and inner-cross tie were greater than the designed details. Consequently, the confinement effect of core concrete reduced from 64% to 54% due to the manufacturing errors in the transverse reinforcing bars, resulting in a decrease in the ductility of PALSW by approximately 4.91%. Considering these findings, the BIM of PLASW with spliced sleeve technique should compliment the bending inner radius of the transverse reinforcing bars, and the defined brittleness increase coefficient reflecting the decreased core concrete confining pressure in the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete should be evaluated as 1.8.

Type 1 and type 2 buildings must regularly conduct precise safety inspections and precise safety diagnosis for the safety and maintenance of facilities, and the safety grade of the building is determined according to the results of the implementation. In addition, the cycle of inspection and diagnosis is determined according to the safety grade of the building. In order to determine the safety grade of the building, a precise safety inspection conducts condition evaluation, and a precise safety diagnosis conducts condition evaluation and safety evaluation. Therefore, since the inspection and diagnosis cycle is determined according to the safety grade of the building, the condition evaluation and safety evaluation must be precise. However, in the case of member unit evaluation, which is the first step in evaluating the current condition, the evaluation grade is determined by using the representative value of the measurement result, and this may result in an error in the evaluation grade. To solve this problem, this study analyzed evaluation criteria for each evaluation item and presented evaluation criteria using inequalities to respond to measurement results and evaluation scores. In addition, we present a functional formula that can reflect performance scores for each evaluation item.

In order to efficiently analysis the stability of a slope, measuring the shear strength of soil is needed. The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is not appropriate for a slope inspection due to cost and weights. One of the ways to effectively measure the N-value is the Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT). This study was performed to develop a minimized multi-function sensors that can easily estimate CPT values and Volumetric Water Content. N value with multi-fuction sensor DCPT showed -2.5 ~ +3.9% error compared with the SPT N value (reference value) in the field tests. Also, the developed multi-fuction sensor system was tested the correlation between the CPT test and the portable tester with indoor test. The test result showed 0.85 R2 value in soil, 0.83 in weathered soil, and 0.98 in mixed soil. As a result of the field test, the multi-function sensor shows the excellent field applicability of the proposed sensor system. After further research, it is expected that the portable multi-function sensor will be useful for general slope inspection.

Recently there are many long span cable supported bridges like Cable Stayed Bridge and Suspension Bridge already constructed or planned. Reconsidering of proper design wind load of long span bridge is required since the meteorological value based on the data only from 1960s to 1995 has been used when we estimate the wind load for designing long span bridges. In this paper, the research area was confined to western and southern coasts where many long span bridges have constructed. The method of moment and the least-squares method were used to estimate the expected wind speeds of 100 year's return period for girder bridges and for 200 year's return period for long span bridges based on the Gumbel's distribution. As the return-period wind speed on the land face was revised because of recent high speed velocity, the revised return-period wind speed is increased by 17%. Compatibility of return-period wind speed was also evaluated using RMS (Root Mean Square) error method. Aa a result of this paper, the least-squares method is more compatible than the method of moment in the case of western and southern coasts in Korea.
