We investigated the moth diversity on an island of southern sea of Korea. We collected moths at three sites on the island of Bogildo, Wando-gun, Jeonnam using a 22-watt ultraviolet light trap from May to October, 2008, and identified a total of 272 species and 948 individuals in 13 families. Species of Noctuidae was the most abundant, with 107 species and 318 individuals, followed by Geometridae (62 species and 147 individuals) and Pyralidae (53 species and 269 individuals). The graph of the estimated species richness in Chao 1 (432.25$\pm$37.39) did not reach an asymptote, which suggests that more moth species could be identified on the island through further sampling. An arctiid moth, Miltochrista striata, was the most abundant species captured in this study. Monthly changes in moth species richness and abundance formed M-shaped curves, with peaks in early summer (June) and late summer (August). Cluster analysis of seven sites on three islands (Aphaedo Island, Sinan-gun, Oenarodo Island, Goheung-gun and Bogildo Island) divided the sites into two groups. Distances among sites and habitat types may play an important role in determining the similarities of moth faunas among sites.
Density fluctuations of soil microarthropods at the Piagol, Mt. Chiri was assessed on the basis of 113, 096 individuals collected from March 1993 to February 1994. Of 6 classes, and 18 orders, the Arachnida and Insecta were the most numerous members with abundance of 51.4% and 46.3%, respectively. The mean density of the Acari was $13, 310/m^2$ of microarthropods. The Acari were abundant in autumn and less found in winter and the density fluctuation of the Collembola followed a similar trend. The vertical distribution of the mesofauna revealed from the soil samples taken from the surface to 5 and from 5 to 10 cm in depths was as follows. In 5~10 cm layer. Collembola was numerous with abundance of 54.7%, followed by 40.1% fo Acari and the soil microarthropods reached the highest density peak in spring, while the lowest in winter. Populations concentrated in the 0~5 cm layer as much as 62.2% throughtout the season and 82.4% throughtout the altitudes. The Acari / Collembola (A/C) ratio in the 0~5 cm layer was higher than that in the 5~10 cm.
The Brentidae is characterized by the reduced labial palpi, which is located in cavities on the apicoental margin of the prementum. The postcoila of two subfamilies of this family is deep and bowl-like on ental surface of the hypostomal arms. The mouthparts treated in here comprise the labrum, clypeus, mandibles, maxillae, labium, hypostoma and the septum of the preoral cavity. The terms are followed principally after Ting and Morimoto. The detail terminology fur the mandibles are newly given. [Insecta, Coleoptera, Comparative morphology, Mouthparts, Brentidae].
The fine structure on the compound eye surface of 2 species(Choerades isshikii (Matsumura), Laphria rufa R$\ddot{o}$der) belong to 2 genera of Laphriinae in Korea was morphologically studied with a scanning electron microscope and image analyser. The compound eye was divided into 3 parts(medial, middle, and lateral) according to a difference in the diameter of a facet. The fine structure of a facet in the medial and middle part was characteristic in Korean Laphriinae. And this morphological character was valuable in taxonomy because of the fine structure was differ from each genus.

The present study aimed to investigate the local moth fauna and population change during a year on Island Oenarodo (N34$^{\circ}$27'50", E127$^{\circ}$28'06", 74 m a. s. l.), Goheung-gun, Jeonnam. Moth collecting was carried out using a light trap from March to October, 2007. A total of 231 species and 562 individuals in 14 families were identified. Species of Noctuidae were the most abundant with 86 species and 163 individuals, followed by Geometridae (60 species and 147 individuals) and Pyralidae (39 species and 135 individuals), respectively. Monthly changes of moths species richness and abundance were M-shaped with two peaks at late Spring and late Summer. During the study, a geometrid, Menophra senilis, and a pyralid, Endotricha olivacealis were most abundant with 16 individuals. The estimated species richness using Chao 1 identified 646 species, suggesting that we need more extensive and long-term survey for the better understanding of the total moth fauna on the island.

Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) supports a decision-making process such as establishment of environmental quality criteria. Soil quality criteria (SQC) are essential to protect soil organisms from the exposure to various soil contaminants. In this study, ERA methodologies of advanced countries for soil pollution were extensively compared to propose the ERA approach suitable for soil ecosystem in Korea. The soil ERAs in European Chemical Bureau(ECB), The Netherlands, and Canada can be classified as deterministic ecological risk assessment (DERA), and probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERA) based on species sensitivity distribution (SSD). We propose three ERA methods according to abundance and reliability of soil ecotoxicity data. The method considered land use such as residential/agricultural, and industrial/commercial uses. The taxonomic groups of soil organism were classified as 'Class' level including different trophic levels (Magnoliopsida or Liliopsida, Clitellata, and Insecta or Secernentea). This study can be used to estimate the soil quality criteria to protect soil biota.
We investigated the moth fauna and monthly changes in moth populations at three sites - Dogapsa, Gyungpodae and Muwisa - in Mt. Wolchul National Park, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. From February to October, 2006, we collected a total of 1677 individuals comprising 348 species in 14 families. Monthly changes in the abundance of species and individuals showed an M-shaped pattern, with the highest peak in June and a second high peak in August. The diversity of the three dominant families (Noctuidae, Geometridae and Pyralidae) at the three sites varied, possibly due to differences in vegetation and other environmental factors. Diversity at Dogapsa was relatively higher than Gyungpodae and Muwisa, but, the fauna at Dogapsa more closely resembled Muwisa than Gyungpodae. 28 species occurred at the same time in all three sites, included the families Geometridae (14 species), Noctuidae (9 species), Pyralidae (2 species), Arctiidae (1 species), Nolidae (1 species), and Limacodidae (1 species). The present study provided baseline information about biodiversity and phenological patterns of moth abundance and permitted evaluation of moth biodiversity as a monitoring tool for vegetation structure and environmental change.
This study deals with 8 species in 6 genera including 5 new species and 2 new records from Taiwan. The new ones are Neanura kentingensis n.sp., Womersleya formosana n.sp., Crossodinthina montana n.sp., Vitronura tubercula sp., Lobella nana n.sp., and 2 new records are Pseudachorucina nepalica Yosii, 1966 and Lobella perfusa Denis., 1934. The Neanuridae fauna of Taiwan accordingly is listed as 13 species in 7 genera. The biogeographic affinities with the Japan, Vietnam and adjacent countries are discussed.
The aquatic animals of Tan stream were composed of 46 species, 28 families, 11 orders, 6 classes in 4 phyla during the survey period of April, 1996 to December, 1996. They were composed of 31 species in aquatic insecta, 6 species in annelida, 3 species in mollusca, 1 species in crustacea, and 5 species in fishes, respectively. Major dominant species in Tan stream were Chironomidae sp.1, Chironomidae sp.2, Chironomidae sp.3, Tubufucidae sp.1, Physa acuta and hirudo niponica. Dominance indices of benthic macroinvertebrates ranged highly from 95.74 to 100.00% at lower stream(site 4), but ranged 50.00 to 95.85% at site 1 through site 3. The aquatic animals ranged from 25 to 32 species at site 1 through site 3, but they were only 3 species at site 4 for survey period. Tan stream in the light of urban stream ecosystem has a little less riffle areas and hydrophyte areas by cementation of riparian area and channel type of water course. Therefore, the species of aquatic animals in Tan stream decreased because of deterioration of water quality according to reduction of self-purifcation ability and loss of microhabitat according to reduction of hydrophyte areas and riparian areas. The tendency of decreasing species of aquatic animals appeared seriously at lower stream From drive licence test authority at Kangnam-ku, Seoul to conjunction point of the Han river.
Based on our insect collecting trip to the Is. Jin-do, Jeollanam-do Province from June 29 to July 1, 2005, a total of 573 lepidopterous species belonging to 37 families are reported, with adding 122 species new to the locality During our survey, the most dominant species was Cryptolechia malacobyrsa Meyrick (Oecophoridae), followed by Sandrabatis crassiella Ragonot (Pyralidae) and Yponomeuta tokyonellus Matsumura(Yponomeutidae), and the family Noctuidae (165 spp.) was the most diverse taxon in species number. We here also discuss the species representing the climatic feature in the island and compare the species diversity with those of other two major islands in Korea, Is. Geoje-do and Is. Jeju-do. Among the species recognized in this study, two species, Epilepia dentata (Matsumura and Shibata) and Meganola costalis (Staudinger) are recorded in Korea for the first time, in spite of the presence of previous notes on the species which is invalid. The adults and genitalia of the two species are illustrated and described briefly.
