  • A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used In many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks In contact with Inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine or propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. In the previous report, we have developed numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structure using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for fluid region. In the present report, using the numerical analysis, vibrations characteristics In deep water tank are investigated and discussed.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the sloshing and bulging mode for the circular cylindrical storage tank with an annular plate on free surface. The cylindrical tank is filled with an inviscid and incompressible liquid. The liquid domain is limited by a rigid cylindrical surface and a rigid flat bottom. As the effect of free surface waves Is taken into account in the analysis, the bulging and sloshing modes are studied. The solution for the velocity potential of liquid movement is assumed as a suitable harmonic function that satisfies Laplace equation and the relevant boundary conditions. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to derive the frequency equation of the cylindrical tank. The effect of Inner-to-outer radius ratio and thickness of annular plate and liquid volume on vibration characteristics of storage tank is studied. The finite element analysis is performed to demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method.

  • In order to apply into a compact and reliable centrifugal blood pump, this paper introduces a self-bearing motor in which a rotor is rotated without contact. The rotor is actively controlled in only radial directions, while the axial and tilting motions are passively stable owing to the disk-shape structure of the rotor. A prototype was made in outer-rotor type that is far better in the compactness than inner-rotor type. The prototype could be driven up to 8000 rpm with the rotor vibration under 0.12mm. The maximum cardiac output and pressure head were 9 L/min and over 200 mmHg, respectively. These experimental results show that the proposed self-bearing motor has sufficient performance for application to a real blood pump.

  • This paper presents theoretical analysis of the NRRO(the non-repeatable run-out) for a ball bearing with geometric imperfection. The 3DOF dynamic analysis of a ball bearing using the Runge-Kutta method is performed to calculate the displacement of shaft center. Frequency and magnitude characteristics of radial and axial vibrations are investigated. The ball form errors of the ball, the inner race, and the outer race in a HDD spindle ball bearing are precisely measured. (omitted)

  • For high density optical storage, there should be a high NA objective lens and a shorter wavelength laser diode. To secure the disc tilt margin related to the coma aberration, moreover, it's difficult to apply the tilt compensation mechanism into the portable PC. In this paper, we proposed the 3-axis asymmetry pickup actuator with high efficiency symmetric magnetic circuit, which consisted of the top cover type inner yoke for high magnetic flux density, the coil stack unit for the 3-axis independent operation and vertically polarized magnets. • The theoretical method is developed to Investigate the nitration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural coupling between shell and plate is simulated using two types of artificial springs a translational spring is introduced for translational coupling and a rotational spring is used for rotational coupling. The springs are continuously distributed along circumferential direction. Using the Rayleigh-Ritz method the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the combined shell with an annular plate examine. The effect of Inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position of annular plate and length-to-radius ratio of shell on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. The theoretical results are verified by comparison with FEM results.

  • The paper deals with the accuracy comparison between two kinds of ultrasonic paths for flow rate measurement. In the Z-path, two transducers are installed on the opposite sides of each other on a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves generated at one transducer propagate to arrive at the other one only by refraction. In the V-path, two transducers are installed on one side of a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves reflected at the inner wall of the pipe are received. Transit times were confirmed to identify the propagation paths by comparing the theoretically calculated results and measured ones. The flow rate measurements with two kinds of ultrasonic paths appeared very similar. It would be possible to select either of the paths by considering the advantages and disadvantages.

  • In this paper, possibility of controlling motion of a floating structure using a tuned liquid damper (TLD) is numerically investigated. A TLD is a tank partially filled with liquid. Sloshing phenomena of liquid inside a tank can suppress movement of the tank subject to external excitations at specific frequency. The effects of sloshing phenomena inside a rectangular floating body on its sway motion are investigated by varying excitation frequency. First, a grid-refinement study is carried out to ensure validity of grid independent numerical solutions using present numerical techniques. Then, sway motion of the floating body subjected to wave with five different frequencies are simulated. The normalized amplitudes of sway motion of the target floating body are compared over the frequency, for cases with and without water inside the floating body. It is shown that the motion of the floating body can be minimized by matching the sloshing natural frequency to excitation frequency.

  • Abnormal cab vibrations in the Y direction in commercial vehicles during driving(70~90kph) are not common vibrations that happen to vehicles during driving and can be an obstacle to normal driving. This study conducted Operation Deflection Shape(ODS) testing to identify the causes of those abnormal cab vibrations and find solutions for them and also a sine sweep test to find resonance and frequency in the cab suspension system and set directions for improvement. The study also altered the shape of the bush inner part for changes to the rigidity features of the cab bush in the Y direction and revised the design with optimal rigidity in the Y direction, thus improving abnormal cab vibrations in the Y direction during driving.
