The ultrasonic guided wave propagates along with the given structure's wall direction. Because of this specific character, the ultrasonic guided waves arc used in many other fields. Especially, it can be readily utilized for nondestructive inspection of various structures that are made up of gas pipes, heat exchanger tubes, and thin plates. Further, the guided wave technology can be readily utilized when inspecting pipes or thin plates which pose high risk of the accident but for which the nondestructive inspection itself is impossible because it is difficult to get to them since they are coated or buried underground. In the other hand, conventional ultrasonic testing such as thickness gauging uses bulk waves and only tests the region of structure immediately below the transducer. As a result of the application about inlet and outlet cooling water line using guided wave test, we conformed that the overall corrosions were in the lower side of the 304.8 mm inlet valve and these corrosions were engaged in not locally but through the lower side of the valve line. In the near future, we can expect that the detectable defect size is smaller than before along with the development of the sensing technology.
In order to understand the underwater noise source factor of the linear pump type forced ejection system, a reduced-model compressed water experiment device was developed. The reduced-model compressed water experiment device consists of a reverberation tank, a linear pump type forced ejection device, and an underwater vehicle. The underwater noise source was selected from the hydraulic ram moving speed, the hydraulic ram/piston pipe spacing, the ejection pipe inlet/water ram area ratio, and the number of water ram inlets. The underwater vehicle was ejected into the reverberation tank by the device. The source level was derived from the measured sound pressure. The source level tends to increase as the hydraulic ram/piston tube spacing and the hydraulic ram moving speed increase. The source level tended to increase as the area ratio was increased, but the level was weak. The number of water ram inlet did not affect the source level.
Pressure distribution around rotating impeller blades in centrifugal pump has been main issue for design of efficient and high performance automotive water pump. In addition, pressure losses of inlet water pipes should be considered to reduce additional pressure drop and design high performance engine cooling system. In this paper, pressure distribution inside water pump and pressure drop between inlet and outlet of water pump are investigated numerically to design plastic water pump for clean diesel engine application. And the inlet geometry of water pump was considered to analysis the effect of inlet water pipe geometry on pressure distribution around impeller blades and outlet pressure. The prediction results are compared with experimental data to validate and determine optimal operation condition without water pump cavitation. Major design parameters such as blade angle, volute geometry, system pressure, and coolant flow rate are considered to confirm applying possibility of plastic blades to the clean diesel engine.
The problem of determining the discharge rates of gases from pressurized vessels through pressure relief devices was dealt with comprehensively. First, starting from basic fluid flow equations, detailed modeling procedures were presented for isentropic nozzle flows and frictional flows in a pipe, respectively. Meanwhile, physical explanations were given to choking phenomena in terms of the acoustic velocity, elucidating the widespread use of Mach numbers in gas flow models. Frictional flows in a pipe were classified into adiabatic, isothermal, and general flows according to the heat transfer situation around the pipe, but the adiabatic flow model was recommended suitable for gas discharge through pressure relief devices. Next, for the isentropic nozzle flow followed by adiabatic frictional flow in the pipe, two equations were established for two unknowns that consist of the Mach numbers at the inlet and outlet of the pipe, respectively. The relationship among the ratio of downstream reservoir pressure to upstream pressure, mass flux, and total frictional loss coefficient was shown in various forms of MATLAB 2-D plot, 3-D surface plot and contour plot. Then, the profiles of gas properties and velocity in the pipe section were traced. A method to quantify the relationship among the pressure head, velocity head, and total friction loss was presented, and was used in inferring that the rapid increase in gas velocity in the region approaching the choked flow at the pipe outlet is attributed to the conversion of internal energy to kinetic energy. Finally, the Levenspiel chart reproduced in this work was compared with the Lapple chart used in API 521 Standatd.
This paper describes performance evaluation of design parameters, air velocity inside a pipeline and pressure along a pipeline, using experimental measurements in an automated vacuum waste collection system. Automatic robot having six cameras is introduced to analyze the internal pipeline conditions whether waste accumulates at the bottom of the pipeline or not. Throughout the experimental measurements of the pipeline having the various shapes, it is found that pressure and internal air velocity linearly increase along the pipeline from a waste inlet to a waste collection station while air density decreases due to the air compression effect with high pressure. Although air velocity inside the pipeline at a waste inlet keeps design velocity range between 20 m/s and 30 m/s, it is noted that air velocity near the waste collection station exceeds maximum design velocity of 30 m/s. Pressure increase per unit length is changed from 17.6 Pa/m to 18.9 Pa/m, which depends on the air velocity inside the pipeline. From the investigation inside the pipeline with CCTV loaded on an automated robot, waste accumulated at the bottom of the pipeline is mainly found at the downstream of a circular curved pipe, an inclined pipe and a bended pipe.
Performing a series of in-situ thermal response tests, the effective thermal conductivity of six vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers was experimentally evaluated and compared each other, which were constructed in a test bed in Wonju. To compare thermal efficiency of the ground heat exchangers in field, the six boreholes were constructed with different construction conditions: grouting materials (cement vs. bentonite), different additives (silica sand vs. graphite) and the shape of pipe-sections (general U-loop type vs. 3 pipe-type). From the test results, it can be concluded that cement grouting has a higher effective thermal conductivity than that of bentonite grouting, and the efficiency of graphite better performs over silica sand as a thermally-enhancing addictive. In addition, a new 3 pipe-type heat exchanger provides less thermal interference between the inlet and outlet pipe than the conventional U-loop type heat exchanger, which results in superior thermal performance.
Heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanger for low temperature waste heat recovery using oscillating capillary tube heat pipe were evaluated against the charge ratio variation of working fluid and various working fluids. R-l42b, R-22 and R-290 were used as working fluids. The heat exchanger was composed of heat pipe with capillary tube bundles, having a 2.6mm in outer diameter, 1.4mm in inner diameter with 101m long, and 40 turns. Charge ratio of working fluid was 40% and 50%. Water was used as secondary fluid. Inlet temperature and mass velocity for each secondary fluid were 297 K, 280 K and9~27 kg /$m^2s$,, respectively. From experimental results, it was found that heat transfer performance of R-22 was higher than those of R-l42b and R-290 and it was proportional to Figure of merit for thermosyphons. As a result, it was thought that R-22 was the most suitable working fluid of waste heat recovery for low temperature waste heat recovery.
Thermal design was conducted for a solar thermal storage system in a medium-temperature range between $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. The system was composed of heat pipes as heat carrier and molten salts as phase-change storage material. Each heat pipe penetrated through the storage system and had two heat-exchanging sections at both ends to interact with high-and low-temperature steams, while it exchanged heat with molten salts in the middle section. During a heat-storage mode, the heat pipes transferred heat from the hot steam at one side to the molten salts and it transferred heat from the molten salt to the cold steam at the other side during the heat-dissipating mode. A tube-bank type heat exchanger theory was applied to this design task to meet the required inlet and outlet temperatures of the steams depending on the operation modes. Several design variables were considered including the lengths of evaporator and condenser of a heat pipe, traverse and longitudinal pitches of the pipe, and the number of rows of the heat pipes for two different molten salt baths. An optimum design results were presented with discussion.
Most of the domestic residential buildings have used the traditional radiant heating system, circulating hot water through the cross-linked polyethylene(PE-X) pipe buried in the floor panel of the heating space. New type of the heating panel was recently developed using heat pipes with double wicks. Some experiments were carried out in this study to verify the thermal characteristics of this heating system at the unit heating space which surrounded by outer space whose temperature of air be maintained scheduled value with time. Through the various experiments with several parameters, such as flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of hot water and the heating duration and so on, we found that the floor heating system with heat pipes was able to reduce the pumping power for hot water circulation by 4~31% compared with the conventional panel heating system using PE-X pipe. These results could be used for optimal design and efficient operation of the heating system as well as improvement of thermal comfort.
Flow fields inside feeder pipes have been simulated numerically using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code to calculate the shear stress distribution, which is the most important factor in predicting the local regions of feeder pipes highly susceptible to FAC (flow-accelerated corrosion)-induced wall thinning. The CFD approach, with schemes used in this study, to simulate the flow situations inside the CANDU feeder pipes has been verified as it showed a good agreement between the investigation results for the failed feedwater pipe at Surry unit 2 plant in the U.S. and the CFD calculation. Sensitivity studies of the three geometrical parameters, such as angle of the first and second bends, length of the first span between the grayloc hub and the first bend, and length of the second span between the first and the second bends have been performed. CFD analysis reveals that the local regions of feeder pipes of Wolsung unit 1 in Korea, on which wall thickness measurements have been performed so far, are not coincident with the worst regions predicted by the present CFD analysis located in the connection region of straight and bend pipe near the inlet part of the bend intrados. Finally, based on the results of the present CFD analysis, a guide to the selection of the weakest local positions where the measurement of wall thickness should be performed with higher priority has been provided.
