  • Recently the need for renewable energy development is expanding due to the global climate change, the environmental issues and the limited fossil energy resources. Dependence of energy on overseas is high in Korea. To resolve the environmental problems and to improve the energy independence rate, the development of renewable energy is more required. The small hydro power, one of the renewable energy resources, has been developing and operating from a long time ago. If we are new developing a small hydro power with the use existing dams and reservoirs, we will design the length of inlet pipe and the diameter suitable for it. However, in case of using the existing water supply pipe which had been designed suitable for water service, the designer has to review and check that the pipe is suitable for operating a generator. In this paper, the design of small hydro power using the existing long pipe of water supply, we suggest the optimum way to reduce the water hammer in pipe which causes the unsteady flow during the load-shutdown of generator, the generator operation plan for the stable supply of water and the design factor of determining the generator capacity through the analysis between discharge and head-loss.

  • Heat transfer and flow characteristics in a pipe in which the rotating cutting tool for boring a underground pipe without digging were considered in this study. The amount of heat generation due to the friction between the rotating cutter and pipe wall, mixing (low of air and water injected to cool down are the two important factors to design the boring machine Computational fluid dynamics analysis using the Eulerian mixture model and the standard $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was used to analyze the complex phenomena in a pipe during the process. Results show that pipe wall temperature decreased with increasing the cooling water inlet velocity. it is also shown that pipe wail temperature was lowered when the cutter rotation speed was increased until 600 rpm. There was no further cooling effect over 600 rpm.

  • Air lift pump operated by buoyancy is mainly used for the continuous circulation and the purification of fluids. In this study, the computational flow analysis has been performed with the geometric and operating conditions of the air lift pump. The numerical data from the analysis have been verified by comparing with the previous experimental data. The following results are obtained which advance the efficiency of the air lift pump. As the submergence length of pipe increases and the pipe length over the water surface decreases, the non-dimensional mass flow ratio increases in both cases. When the position of the air injection hole is within the pipe, the circulation range of the surrounding fluid becomes widened with the distance between the air injection hole and the pipe inlet relatively becoming narrower. It is more efficient both when the air injection velocity is at 10 m/s and at 15 m/s, and when the diameter of the pipe with holes is doubled near the water surface. It is expected that these results can be provided as fundamental data for operating the air lift pump.

  • A numerical analysis on branch type sparger in drain tank for depressurization is performed to investigate the flow characteristics due to the change of design factor. As the result of this study, sparger\\`s flow resistance coefficient(K) is 3.53 at the present design condition when engineering margin for surface roughness is considered as 20%, and flow ratio into branch pipe ($Q_s/Q_i$) is 0.41. The correlation for calculating flow resistance coefficients as design factor is presented. Flow resistance coefficient is increased as section area ratio of branch pipe for main pipe and outlet nozzle diameter of main pipe decreasing, but the effects of branch angle and inlet flow rate of main pipe are small. As the change rate of ($Q_s/Q_i$)becomes larger, the change rate of flow resistance coefficient increases. The rate of pressure loss has the largest change as section area ratio changing. The condition of maximum flow resistance in sparger is when the outlet nozzle diameter ratio of main pipe ($D_e/D_i$) is 0.167, the section area ratio ($A_s/A_i$) is 0.1 and the branch angle ($\alpha$) is 55^{\circ}$.

  • We herein propose a systematic design method of hydraulic pipes used in heavy construction equipment. We found that even though many design studies have been conducted regarding major hydraulic components such as pumps, cylinders, and control valves, studies regarding the optimal design of hydraulic pipes are scarce. In this study, the design of four types of pipes is considered: two high-pressure and two low-pressure pipes. First, fluid flow analysis was conducted based on oil flow and pressure for various radii of curvature. For a check-valve pipe, we considered the location of an inlet pipe. We could visualize fluid flow inside the pipe according to the flow velocity and pressure distribution. Based on fluid flow analysis, we conducted a structural analysis that revealed the stress distribution and concentration for each pipe design. We selected the best design parameters for each pipe design, fabricated the pipes, and subsequently tested them for validity.

  • The analysis of the fluid flow characteristics in reactor pressure vessel is an important part of the hydraulic design of nuclear power plant, which is related to the structure design of reactor internals, the flow distribution at core inlet and the safety of nuclear power plant. The flow distribution and mixing characteristics in the pressurized reactor vessel for the 1000MWe advanced pressurized water reactor is analyzed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method in this study. The geometry model of the full-scaled reactor vessel is built, which includes the cold and hot legs, downcomer, lower plenum, core, upper plenum, top plenum, and is verified with some parameters in DCD. Under normal condition, it is found that the flow skirt, core plate holes and outlet pipe cause pressure loss. The maximum and minimum flow coefficient is 1.028 and 0.961 respectively, and the standard deviation is 0.019. Compared with other reactor type, it shows relatively uniform of the flow distribution at the core inlet. The coolant mixing coefficient is investigated with adding additional variables, showing that mass transfer of coolant occurs near the interface. The coolant mainly distributes in the 90° area of the corresponding core inlet, and mixes at the interface with the coolant from the adjacent cold leg. 0.1% of corresponding coolant is still distributed at the inlet of the outer-ring components, indicating wide range of mixing coefficient distribution.

  • This paper describes the experimental investigations on the pressure variations of intake and exhaust manifold and mass flow rate through exhaust turbine of turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel engine. The turbocharger of experimental diesel engine is constructed with the radial ty pe exhaust turbine and blower driven by exhaust gases. The pressure variations were measur ed by pressure transducer at the points such as turbine inlet and outlet, compressor inlet and outlet, and inlet pipe and exhaust manifolds for normal and combined charging engines with the change of engine speed. The experimental results of this study show that the mass flow rate of exhaust turbine and the variations of pressure in intake and exhaust manifold are all increased with the increase of engine speed.

  • Thermal stratification enhancement for the higher extraction efficiency of hot water storage tank was experimentally studied with transparent fiber glass cylindical tank($350{\ell}$, D=516mm, H=1680mm). Height to diameter ratio (H/D =1,2,3), flow rate(Q= 8,10,12LPM), inlet-outlet temperature differences(${\Delta}T=20,25,30^{\circ}C$), and geometry of inlet-outlet port were the parameters. In particular, three kind of distributors were used for geometry of inlet-outlet port. As a result, it was possible to get extraction efficiency of 95% by using the distributor having variable diameter but keeping a constant diameter of perforation. So it is recommendable to design the distributor so that the main pipe decrease in diameter toward the dead end.

  • An experimental investigation has been performed on the steady flow in exhaust system. When individual flow coming from exhaust manifold entered UCC, the inlet conditions at entry to the diffuser in UCC were affected by the upstream pipe and manifold works. But those effects of the inlet condition on flow through monolith are negligible because the flows are concentrated on the center of monolith regardless of inlet flow distribution. To improve the flow distribution, we installed the cone type circular ring in diffuser of UCC. This led to increasement of flow uniformity, but there was minor increment of pressure drop.
