This paper presents the performance enhancement of a double-inlet centrifugal blower by the shape optimization of an inlet duct. Two design variables, a length of anti circulation vane and an angles of inlet guide, are introduced to improve the inlet flow uniformity leading to the blower performance. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are used to analyze the blower performance and the internal flow of the blower. From the shape optimization of the inlet duct of the double-inlet centrifugal blower, the optimal positions of each design variable are determined. Throughout the analysis of sensitivity, it is found that the angle of the inlet guide is more effective than the length of the anti-circulation vane to increase flow uniformity at the outlet of the duct. Efficiency and pressure for the optimal inlet duct shape are successfully increased up to 3.55% and 3.2% compared to those of reference blower at the design flow condition, respectively. Detailed flow field inside the blower is also analyzed and compared.
This paper presents a numerical study on the design of side-suction inlet geometry which is used for multi stage centrifugal pumps or inline centrifugal pumps. In order to achieve an optimum inlet geometry and to explain the interactions between the different geometric configurations, the three dimensional computational fluid dynamics and the design of experiment methods have been applied. Geometric design variables describing the cross sectional area distribution through the inlet were selected. The objective functions are defined as the non-uniformity of the velocity distribution at the passage exit which is just in front of the impeller eyes. From the 2k factorial design results, the most important design variable was found and the performance of the side suction inlet was improved compared to the base line shape.

The design process of blended inlet body (BIB) for the preliminary design of a near-space high supersonic unmanned aerial vehicle (HSUAV) is presented. The mass flow rate and cowl area of inlet at a design point are obtained according to the cruise condition of the HSUAV. A mixed-compression axisymmetric supersonic inlet section with a fixed geometry reasonably matching the high supersonic cruise state is created by using the inviscid theory of aerodynamics. The inlet section is optimized and used as a baseline section for the BIB design. Three BIB concepts for the HSUAV are proposed, and their internal aerodynamic characteristics of inlet are evaluated using Euler computational fluid dynamics (Euler CFD) solver. The preferred concept is identified, in which the straight leading edge of the baseline HSUAV configuration is modified into the convex leading edge to accommodate the inlet and meet the requirements of the cowl area to capture the sufficient air flow. The total recovery of inlet for the preferred BIB concept and the aerodynamic characteristics of the modified HSUAV configuration are verified using Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (NS CFD) solver. The validation indicates that the preferred BIB concept can meet both the requirements of the inlet and aerodynamic performance of the HSUAV.
The performance of muffler can be improved for a frequency range of interest by moving inlet and outlet locations. And optimal location of inlet and outlet can be determined to improve the acoustic performance. The optimum design using FEM, however, may take a very long time and be very hard to take inlet and outlet locations as design variables. In this paper, the acoustic performance of reactive type single expansion chamber muffler is predicted using higher order mode theory. The sensitivity analysis of transmission loss with respect to the location of inlet and outlet is suggested. And the acoustic power transmission coefficient for a frequency of interest is used as cost function. Optimum location of inlet and outlet is determined to minimize cost function by using SUMT algorithm.
Inlet part of a printed circuit heat exchanger has been optimized by using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes analysis and surrogate modeling techniques. Kriging model has been used as the surrogate model. The objective function for the optimization has been defined as a linear combination of uniformity of mass flow rate and the pressure loss with a weighting factor. For the optimization, the angle of the inlet plenum wall, radius of curvature of the inlet plenum wall, and width of the inlet pipes have been selected as design variables. Twenty six design points are obtained by Latin Hypercube Sampling in design space. Through the optimization, considerable improvement in the objective function has been obtained in comparison with the reference design of PCHE.
The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.
This research is to investigate the performance analysis for efficient design with four different inlet angles of the centrifugal pump impeller. Assuming that the rotation speed and exit angle are fixed, Four cases of the centrifugal pumps were numerically analyzed using ANSYS FLUENT. According to the numerical results, head and pump efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees was highest. There is no big difference of efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees compared to the inlet angle 30 degrees. About 15% of efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees is higher than inlet angle of 40 degrees and 31% higher than inlet angle oof 50 degrees. Because there is liner functional relationship between speed and flow rate, suction flow rate at inlet angle of 20 degrees is superior to the inlet angle of 30 degrees as much as 0.89%, inlet angle of 40 degrees as 13%, inlet angle of 50 as 28.4%. Head at inlet angle of 20 degrees is superior to the inlet angle of 30 degrees as much as 0.4%, inlet angle of 40 degrees as 2.7%, inlet angle of 50 degrees as 3.2%. There should exist highest efficiency and also optimal design shape at inlet angle of 20 degrees.
Numerical investigations were performed with an external-compression inlet with a three-dimensional bump at Mach 2 to scrutinize the geometrical effects of the bump in controlling the interaction of a shock wave with a boundary layer. The inlet was designed for two oblique shock waves and a terminal normal shock wave followed by a subsonic diffuser, with a circular cross-section throughout. The bump-type inlet that replaced the aft ramp of the conventional ramp-type inlet was optimized with respect to the inlet performance parameters as well as compared with the conventional ramp-type inlet. The current numerical simulations showed that a bump-type inlet can provide an improvement in the total pressure recovery downstream of the shock wave/boundary layer interaction over a conventional ramp-type inlet.

In this study, an in-house program to analyze the performance degradation for gas turbines is developed using MATLAB and is validated using commercial software. This program consists of design and off-design calculations. The results of design calculation is used for reference values of off-design calculation. The off-design calculation is composed of measured and expected performance analyses, and turbine inlet temperature correction. In general, performance degradation is analyzed by comparing the results of measured and expected performance analysis. However, if gas turbine performance degrades, turbine inlet temperature might increase due to the general control logic to comply with the power demand. Therefore, it is required to consider the deviation of turbine inlet temperature from the normal value in the performance diagnosis to analyze the performance degradation exactly. In this study, a special effort is given to the correction of turbine inlet temperature. The accuracy of the developed program is confirmed by comparison with commercial software, and its capability of performance diagnosis using the turbine inlet temperature correction is demonstrated.
