  • The properties of contaminants, contaminated soil, and the elapsed time are important factors to in-situ soil remediation. Gabr et. al. (1996) derived the solution equation of contaminant concentration ratio as initial one $(C/C_0)$ with time and spatial changes in contaminated area with vertical drains. The contaminant concentration ratio $(C/C_0)$ is analyzed with time and spatial changes as varying the effective diameter, porosity, shape factor, density of contaminated soil and temperature in ground and unit weight, viscosity of contaminants by using FLUSH1 model. Results from numerical analysis indicate that the most important factor to the in-situ soil remediation using vertical drains is the effective diameter of contaminated soil. It also shows that the viscosity of contaminants, porosity of soil, shape of soil, temperature in ground, unit weight of contaminants are, in order, affected to the soil remediation but density of soil is insignificant to the soil remediation.

  • In the current paper, the effects of initial slug design on the earring of an Al rectangular battery case manufactured by impact extrusion were studied. During impact extrusion, non-uniform metal flow between the long and the short sides of the battery case leads to earring, which is subsequently trimmed. Process parameters such as friction, aspect ratio of the battery case, the die shape and the forming temperature tend to induce earring because they cause greater non-uniform metal flow. Large aspect ratio of the battery case and high friction between slug and die can greatly affect the earring of a rectangular battery case. To make a rectangular battery case without earring, it is necessary to control metal flow uniformly during impact extrusion. One of the ways to reduce the earring is to control the metal flow of slug at the initial upsetting stage. To analyze the effects of the initial slug design on earring, FE analysis was conducted using DEFORM 3D. Two types of initial slug designs were evaluated where volume was removed along either the width or thickness directions. The results show that the initial slug design can be effective in adjusting the uniformity of metal flow.

  • The study proposed the initial equilibrium state analysis method that considers axial deformation, in order to accurately determine the initial shape of a cable-stayed bridge. Sepecifically, the proposed method adopted the successive iteration method. In order to evaluate appropriate initial cable force introduced in the initial equilibrium state analysis, parametric studies were performed and a useful linear analysis method proposed. The geometrically nonlinear static behaviors of cable-stayed bridges were considered, using three-dimensional frame element and elastic catenary cable element. The usefulness and applicability of the analytic method proposed in this study were demonstrated using numerical examples, including a real cable-stayed bridge. The algorithm, is applicable in cases wherein axial deformation is not adopted in the fabrication camber, or final cable force is adjusted to eliminate construction and fabrication errors occurring during construction.

  • Shape From Focus (SFF) is a passive optical technique to recover 3D structure of an object that utilizes focus information from 2D images of the object taken at different focus levels. Mostly, SFF methods use a single focus measure to compute image focus quality of each pixel in the image sequence. However, it is difficult to recover accurate 3D shape using a single focus measure, as different focus measures perform differently in diverse conditions. In this paper, a nonlinear Total Variation (TV) based approach is proposed for 3D shape recovery. To improve the result of surface reconstruction, several initial depth maps are obtained using different focus measures and the resultant 3D shape is obtained by diffusing them through TV. The proposed method is tested and evaluated by using image sequences of synthetic and real objects. The results and comparative analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

  • Buckling analysis of thin compressed beam has been carried out. Pre-buckling and post-buckling are simulated by finite element method incorporating with the incremental nonlinear theory and the Newton-Raphson solution technique. In order to find the bifurcation point, the determinent of the stiffness matrix is calculated at every iteration procedure. For post-buckling analysis, a small perturbed initial guess is given along the eigenvector direction at the bifurcation point. Nonlinear elastic buckling and elastic-plastic buckling of cantilever beam are analyzed. The buckling load and buckled shape of the two models are compared.

  • Using a level set method and topological derivatives, a topological shape optimization method that is independent of an initial design is developed for linearly elastic structures. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set function, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. The "Hamilton-Jacobi(H-J)" equation and computationally robust numerical technique of "up-wind scheme" lead the initial implicit boundary to an optimal one according to the normal velocity field while minimizing the objective function of compliance and satisfying the constraint of allowable volume. Based on the asymptotic regularization concept, the topological derivative is considered as the limit of shape derivative as the radius of hole approaches to zero. The required velocity field to update the H-J equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. It turns out that the initial holes are not required to get the optimal result since the developed method can create holes whenever and wherever necessary using indicators obtained from the topological derivatives. It is demonstrated that the proper choice of control parameters for nucleation is crucial for efficient optimization process.

  • A finite element analysis code considering elasto-plastic large deformation is developed to predict the ultimate strength of circular cylinders subject to external pressure loading by introducing a new type of axisymmetric shell element which can take into account the plasticity effect due to the circumferential bending while drastically saving the computing efforts compared with the tree dimensional finite element analysis. It is observed that analsis results of present approach show good agreement with the test results of previous works. Parametric study gives the effects of initial imperfections on ultimate strength ahd this information is recommended to be used to modify the actual test data to the ones which can be used more reasonably in making empirical design formulas.

  • In this paper, we use the optimization design theory based on the finite element method and implement the optimal design of electromagnetic devices using COMSOL interface. COMSOL is one of the commercial EM software. Shape information for the design optimization is extracted by CAD in EM software. To calculate the shape of optimal design, sensitive analysis is applied to the design processing in MATLAB. To achieve the design objective in this paper, objective function is defined. According to the sensitive analysis based on the finite element method, we change the design variable after the sensitivity of the objective function is computed. To verify the proposed method, the results are compared with the initial design.

  • The constant air volume flow fan can maintain constant flow rate to the wide range of exit pressure. Therefore, the use of this fan is increasing recently for ventilation of high building. Brushless DC motor is adopted to this fan because that has advantages of compactness and performance. But this type of motor protrude from impeller hub side to fan inlet. The Impeller inlet flow is influenced by size of this obstacle called hub. In this paper, the influence of hub shape on the fan performance characteristics are experimentally and numerically analyzed. CFX 12.0 is used to perform the fan internal flow analysis and numerical results are compared with the experiments. Depending on hub shape, internal loss is generated and the performance and efficiency are reduced. The best performance is occurred around $h/b_1$ = 0.25. The results of this study will be contribute to initial design of constant air volume flow fan development.

  • In the recent field of Machining, with the improving efficiency of processing, the index table is a key unit according to the increase of parts in available processing when working with the three axes at the same time. As an essential product of MCT, the index tables effect an influence on product quality of machined parts. Therefore, it is necessary to design the shape of index table with stability, high stiffness, lightweight structure. In this study, the optimal shape of index table was proposed using by design of experiment. The maximum displacement and stress analysis were carried out by using FEM software. The optimized shape was verified by using the statistical software. The results of shape optimization were confirmed that both displacement and stress were reduced in comparison with initial model.
