Strength Analysis of Mark III Cargo Containment System using Anisotropic Failure Criteria

  • Membrane type Mark III cargo containment system (CCS) is considered in this study to investigate its strength capability under applied loads due to liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo. A rectangular plated structure supported by inner hull structure is exemplified from Mark III CCS according to classification society's guidance and it is assumed as multi-layered structure by stacking plywood, triplex, reinforced polyurethane (PU) foam and series of mastic upon inner hull structure. Commercially available general purpose finite element analysis package is used to have reliable FE models of Mark III CCS plate. The FE models and anisotropic failure criteria such as maximum stress, Hoffman, Hill, Tsai-Wu and Hashin taking into account the direction dependent material properties of Mark III CCS plate components and their material properties considering a wide variation of temperature due to the nature of LNG together form the strength analysis procedure of Mark III CCS plate. Strength capability of Mark III CCS plate is understood by its initial failure and post-initial failure states. Results are represented in terms of failure loads and locations when initial failure and post-initial failures are occurred respectively. From the results the basic design information of Mark III CCS plate is given.

GFRP로 보강된 다양한 초기 조건의 콘크리트보의 파괴 거동 평가 (Evaluation of Failure Mode in Concrete Beam Restrengthened with GFRP with Various Initial Conditions)

  • 유리섬유로 보강된 보강된 보의 경우 초기조건 및 보강형태에 따라 다양한 파괴모드가 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 콘크리트 탄성계수보다 약간 큰 유리섬유 보강재를 적용한 무근 콘크리트보의 파괴거동을 분석하였다. 실험을 위해 24 MPa 강도를 가지는 보를 제작하였으며, 초기 노치, 겹이음, 단부보강, 파이버 앵커 등의 영향을 분석하였다. 노치 및 노치부의 겹이음은 일반보강효과와 비슷한 하중증가를 나타내었는데, 이는 함침된 유리섬유의 에폭시가 노치 단면을 충분히 수복하기 때문이다. 보강하지 않은 기준기편에 비하여 초기 노치의 경우 0.78을, 보강한 경우는 4.43~5.61의 보강효과를 나타내었으며 휨파괴에서 시작되는 계면파괴가 지배적이었다. 높이의 1/3 이상의 단부 스트립과 파이버 앵커를 가진 경우 가장 이상적인 파괴거동(보강재 파단)을 나타내었는데, 일반 보강시편보다 150 % 이상의 파괴하중을 나타내었다.

조기(TNM Stage I & II) 구강 편평세포암종의 초치료 실패 (The Failure of Initial Treatment for TNM Stage I & II Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Oral Cavity)

  • Backgrounds and Objectives: Squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity(SCOC) in TNM stage I & II have relatively high chance to be cured compared to those in the advanced stage, but sometimes result in the treatment failure with poor prognosis. There have been few reports on the patterns of failure and the clinical courses for SCOC in stage I & II after the failure of initial treatment. This study is directed at identifying the clinical outcomes of stage I & II SCOC and the salvage rate after initial treatment and suggesting an optimal level of treatment by analyzing the patterns of failure. Material and Methods: The medical records of 36 patients with SCOC, initially diagnosed between 1995 and 2001 as TNM stage I & II were reviewed retrospectively. The patterns of failure, salvage treatment, clinical courses, and the survival of these subjects were analyzed. The minimum follow-up period of no-evidence of disease(NED) was 12 months with an average of 32.2 months. Results: Overall rate of the treatment failure in SCOC of stage I & II was 41. 7%(15/36 cases). Most of the treatment failure in the subjects with stage I tumors occurred in regional lymph node. Local failure was the most frequent form of failure in the subjects with stage II tumors after wide excision of primary tumor with elective neck dissection and/or radiation therapy. No significant correlation was noted between the safety margin and the local failure. Elective neck dissections in stage I & II SCOC had a tendency to reduce regional failure (p=0.055). The salvage rates at 24 months were 85.7% in stage I, and 37.5% in stage II. The 3-year survival rate after the failure of initial treatment was 55.0%. Conclusion: SCOC of stage I & II after the failure of initial treatment showed poor prognosis despite of the salvage treatments. This study implies that the elective neck dissections for regional lymph node should be required for SCOC of stage I & II to reduce the treatment failure.

강판으로 보강된 RC보의 조기파괴제어에 관한 실헙적 연구 (A Experimental Study on the Control of Premature Failure of RC Beams strengthened by Steel Plates)

  • In the case of reinforced concrete beams strengthening by steel plate, sometimes these beams collapse due to the stress concentration at the ends of steel plates before the design expected failure. This kind of failure is called premature failure. This study analyzes the behavior of strengthened RC beams to control premature failure of these plated beams with either changing the geometries at the ends of plates or strengthening steel plates beside the ends. The results from the former cases show that, the effect of expanded plates sections at the ends was very small, and the beams which are rounded the ends of plates effectively increased the initial rip-off loads about 14% compared with control beam but the ultimate loads was almost same. However, the beams in the latter cases effectively increased the initial and the ultimate rip-off loads with changing failure mode, especially around 14~19% in the ultimate rip-off load comparing with control beam.

  • This paper try to find root-cause of failure in a connector used in transmitting signals for throttle body control in automotives by analyzing possible failure causes and performing experiments to simulate the cable failure in field. The connector comprises fins, wires, and case moldings. The failure is due to degradation of initial clamping force required fixing fins and wires in the connector. Expansion and compression of the case molding material surrounding fins would cause the degradation. Investigations of strict initial claming force and control of thermal expansion property of the molding are required to prevent the failure.

  • Purpose: Rhabdomyolysis is one of the most important complications of pesticide intoxication. It affects a patient's clinical prognosis and can cause acute renal failure. It is important that patients diagnosed with pesticide intoxication receive an accurate initial diagnosis and proper treatment to prevent significant complications. This study's objective was to investigate and confirm related factors causing acute renal failure by verifying clinical observations and laboratory findings collected following pesticide intoxication. Methods: A retrospective analysis was made of 734 patients who presenting to our emergency medical center after ingesting pesticides between January 2006 and December 2008, Of these, 513 patients were selected for the study. Two hundred and twenty-one patients were excluded because of paraquat intoxication, age (if under 18), or chronic renal failure. Seventy-four patients were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, based on serum creatinine phosphokinase levels were > 1,000U/L. Acute renal failure was diagnosed when creatinine levels were > 2.0 mg/dL. Results: Among the 74 patients diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, 26 (35.1%) experienced acute renal failure. The most meaningful related factor in the prediction of acute renal failure was initial arterial pH and creatinine level. Conclusion: Initial arterial pH and creatinine level are predictors of complications such as acute renal failure in patients with rhabdomyolysis.

삼차원 적층복합재 구멍의 형상 최적화 (Shape Optimization of Three-Dimensional Cutouts in Laminated Composite Plates)

  • Shape optimization was performed to obtain the precise shape of cutouts including the internal shape of cutouts in laminated composite plates by three dimensional modeling using solid element. The volume control of the growth-strain method was implemented and the distributed parameter chosen as Tsai-Hill fracture index for shape optimization. The volume control of the growth-strain method makes Tsai-Hill failure index at each element uniform in laminated composites under the initial volume. Then shapes optimized by Tsai-Hill failure index were compared with those of the initial shapes for the various load conditions and cutouts. The following conclusions were obtained in this study. (1) It was found that growth-strain method was applied efficiently to shape optimization of three dimensional cutouts in a laminate composite, (2) The optimal shapes of the various load conditions and cutouts were obtained, (3) The maximum Tsal-Hill failure index was reduced up to 67% when shape optimization was peformed under the initial volume by volume control of growth-strain method.

강우로 인한 철도 연변사면의 활동분석 : 실내모형실험 (Analysis on the Rainfall Driven Slope Failure Adjacent to a Railway : Flume Tests)

  • 최근 지구온난화현상으로 인해 발생하는 국지성 호우는 철도 연변사면 활동 및 활동 토체로 인한 선로매몰 그리고 선로유실 등의 불안정성을 초래하는 요인으로 대두되고 있다. 강우로 인한 사면의 거동에 대한 현장조사 결과 토층의 두께 및 사면의 형태적 특성 등에 따라 서로 다른 활동특성이 관측되었다. 이와 같은 활동특성을 천층 활동타입, 중간층 활동타입, 우곡부 활동타입, 암반 경계부 활동타입 4가지로 분류하였다. 이러한 관측과 관련하여 각 타입의 활동메커니즘을 규명하고 강우시 사면의 거동특성을 분석하고자 실내모형실험을 수행하였다. 실내모형실험은 미립분함량, 초기함수비, 경사각, 다짐에너지를 고정 변수로 취하고 토피고, 강우강도, 사면표면의 형태를 변화시키는 조건으로 수행되었다. 실내모형실험의 결과 천층 활동은 주로 표층에서 발생하며 침식에 의한 활동임을 알 수 있었다. 또한 초기 침식이 상대적으로 다른 활동타입에 비해서 늦게 발생하였으나 침식의 진행은 빨랐다. 우곡부 활동타입은 우곡부로 집수된 빗물로 인하여 침식 정도가 더 심하게 진행되었으며 사면내 위치하는 전석이 드러날 정도였다. 전석층까지 침식이 발생한후 전석의 존재로 인하여 추가적인 침식이 상대적으로 그 이전보다 느리게 발생하였다. 암반 경계부 활동타입의 경우 본 실험에서 가장 빨리 초기 활동 발생이 관측되었다. 각 활동타입에서 공통적으로 관측된 사항은 사면의 하단부에서 초기 변형이 관측되었으며 이러한 관측은 사면내 침투수의 사면방향의 흐름을 의미한다.

DC magnetron Sputtering 법으로 제작한 Ti$_{x}$N 박막의 밀착력에 미치는 코팅조건의 영향 (Effects of coating Condition on Adhesive strength Ti$_{x}$N Films Prepared by the DC Magetron Sputtering Method)

  • Stainless steel is being used widely lor various purposes due to its good corrosion resistance. There has becn much research to produce colored stainless sterl by several methods. In this experiment, we coated TixN film on the SUS304 substrate with thc DC magnetron sputtering system and studied the internal structurc and adhesive strength of the films as a function of the coating conditions. Before lhe specimen was coated, a sputter etching was very effective in removing the$\delta$ Fe(BCC) phase as well as the contaminant and oxide layer as well as increasing rotghness. Five-stage failure mode appeared with increased scratch load with the TIN films coated on the SUS304 in this manner ; tensile failure-,conformal failure-,buckling failure->chipping failurc and spalling Failure. When the failure was terminated at the initial stage, the film will have good adhesion. But, if syalling failure has occurred at the initial scratch, then the adhesion will be poor. The interlayer between thc coated film and thc substratc was homogeneously adhcsive when the $\gamma'-Fe_4N$ phase wasn't detected in the XRD analysis and the adhesive strength only was reduced by surPace defects. But, when the ,$\gamma'-Fe_4N$N phasc was detected in the XRD analysis, the adhesive strength was very poor.
