  • This study was performed in order to assess the risk of earthworm when the picoxystrobin was sprayed in Korean orchard. The acute toxicity ($LC_{50}$) of picoxystrobin active ingredient(99.3%) and soluble concentrate (25%) against earthworm was showed 10.93 mg/kg and 8-16 mg/kg respectively. This earth worm toxicity value means that the picoxystrobin do not show the earthworm risk in present Korean risk assessment system. However, in the test which was simulated the rainfall after spraying, all the earthworm were died in 24 hours. This result indicated that the risk assessment for the earthworm should be considered the weather condition.

  • According to extremely industrial growth, gas facilities, equipments and chemical plants are gradually increased due to incremental demands of annual amount of gases. The safety management of gases, however, is still far from their requirements. Methane, the principal ingredient of natural gas, is inflammable and explosive and is much used in factories and houses. Therefore, these gas safety management is essential. So, we, with a program of the gas safety management, hope to develop the detection system of methane gas leak using mid-infrared ray LED and PD with $3.2\;{\mu}m$. The cryogenic cooling device is indispensible at laser but needless at LED driven on the room temperature if manufacturing optical sensor with $3.2\;{\mu}m$. It, consequently, is not only possible to implement for subminiature and portable type but also able to speedily detect methane of extremely small quantities because the $CH_4$ absorption intensity at $3.2\;{\mu}m$ is stronger than that at $1.67\;{\mu}m$. Our objective of research is to prevent gas leak accidents from occurring previously and to minimize the extent of damage from them.

  • Objectives: The level of benzene exposure in the petrochemical industry during regular operation has been well established, but not in turnaround (TA), where high exposure may occur. In this study, the characteristics of occupational exposure to benzene during TA in the petrochemical companies were investigated in order to determine the best management strategies and improve the working environment. This was accomplished by evaluating the exposure level for the workers working in environments where benzene was being produced or used as an ingredient during the unit process. Methods: From 2003 to 2008, a total of 705 workers in three petrochemical companies in Korea were studied. Long- and short-term (< 1 hr) samples were taken during TAs. TA was classified into three stages: shut-down, maintenance and start-up. All works were classified into 12 occupation categories. Results: The long-term geometric mean (GM) benzene exposure level was 0.025 (5.82) ppm (0.005-42.120 ppm) and the short-term exposure concentration during TA was 0.020 (17.42) ppm (0.005-61.855 ppm). The proportions of TA samples exceeding the time-weighted average, occupational exposure level (TWA-OEL in Korea, 1 ppm) and the short-term exposure limit (STEL-OEL, 5 ppm) were 4.1% (20 samples of 488) and 6.0% (13 samples of 217), respectively. The results for the benzene exposure levels and the rates of exceeding the OEL were both statistically significant (p < 0.05). Among the 12 job categories of petrochemical workers, mechanical engineers, plumbers, welders, fieldman and scaffolding workers exhibited long-term samples that exceeded the OEL of benzene, and the rate of exceeding the OEL was statistically significant for the first two occupations (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the periodic work environment must be assessed during non-routine works such as TA.

  • Broccoli has a functional substance, sulforaphane that has effects of anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Sulforaphane, one of the hydrolysis products of glucoraphanin in broccoli, cabbage and kale, was contributed to the role of antioxidant. Broccoli contains a number of bioactive compounds including glucosinolates, S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide and many antioxidants. The ethanol extract (BE), hexane extract (BH), propylene glycol extract (BP) and butylenesglycol extract (BB) of broccoli were used to investigate the antioxidation and anti-inflammatory effects of sulforaphane extracts from broccoli. The high scavenging abilities of DPPH, $O_2{^-}$ were observed. Also sulforaphane extracts from broccoli showed the inhibition effect on NO rate. These results demonstrated that sulforaphane extracts from broccoli could be useful as an antioxidation and anti-inflammatory functional ingredient.

  • This study was carried to assess the accuracy of material safety data sheets (MSDS) for some water-soluble metalworking fluid (MWF) with respect to mono- ethanolamine(MEA), di-ethanolamine(DEA) and tri-ethanolamine (TEA). 39 fresh and 52 used MWFs for this study were taken from the workplace. The quantification and qualification of MEA, DEA and TEA were done using ion-chromatography. Three main findings of this study were 1) EA that was not addressed in material safety & data sheets (MSDS) was found to be enough higher than 1%, 2) 33.3% of 39 fresh MWF showed ingredient and concentration of MEA, DEA and TEA in MSDS and 3) the concentrations of MEA(20.5%), DEA(41.3%) and TEA(15.4%) were much higher than those indicated in MSDS. Consequently, we concluded that the accuracy on ingredients and concentrations of MEA, DEA and TEA provided in MWF was very low. Our study recommends that the limit concentration of chemical except for carcinogen that employer has to indicate in MSDS should be lowered from 1% to 0.1% .

  • The result that analyze for 6 years a groundwater influx quantity of total 60 catch-pit established in subway line 5 appeared with $0.77m^3/min$. When comparing design approaches of the catch-pit with design approaches of the box structure $2m^3/min$ and the tunnel structure $3m^3/min$, it is found that it has a surplus. Red sedimentation substance contains large portion of Fe. The earth retaining structure of a tunnel and groundwater containing more portion of Fe than other area rue the major factor of this substance. In case of white sedimentation substance, the most frequently founded ingredient is CaO, which is occurred in case grouting injection materials for ground reinforcement is transmitted into a tunnel system by ground water. This substance is doesn't affect safety of a tunnel.
