  • A portable near infrared (NIR) system which was newly integrated by our lab has been used to develop a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. The portable NIR system includes a tungsten halogen lamp, a photo diode array type-InGaAs detector, and specialized reflectance fiber optic probes. The shape of probes is composed of two parts. one for illumination into sample and the other for receiving the radiation from sample. Three kinds of probes with different distance between illumination and receiving part. such as 0.03. 0.1. and 0.5mm, were investigated for optimization. (omitted)

  • This paper describes a newly designed multipoint process monitoring system based on a NIR acousto-optic tunable filter. The NIR multipoint process monitoring system consists of a NIR AOTF device for wavelength selection, an InGaAs array sensor, and a specially designed iin-line type of optical fiber probe. Unlike a FTS(Fourier Transform Spectrometry) or grating based monitoring system, an AOTF has no moving parts, and it can be rapidly tuned to any wavelength in its operating range within microseconds. Thus, the AOTF is advantageous in terms of faster spectral imaging capability and rigidity required for industrial monitoring environment. In the current feasibility evaluation, an enhanced optical fiber probe with 3 monitoring points was used. However, ...

  • Polarized Fourier transform infrared (IR) absorption is used to probe molecular conformation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) during the reorientation induced by the external field. Spectra of planar aligned cells of FLC W314 are measured as functions of IR polarizer orientation and electric field applied to the FLC. The time evolution of the dichroism of the absorbance due to biphenyl core and alkyl tail molecular vibration modes, is observed. Static IR dichroism experiments show a W314 dichroism structure in which the principal axis of dielectric tensor from molecular core vibration are tilted further from the smectic layer normal than those of the tail. This structure indicates the effective binding site in which the molecules are confined in the Sm-C phase has, on average, "zig-zag" shape and this zig-zag binding site structure is rigidly maintained while the molecular axis rotates about the layer normal during field-induced switching.

  • This paper proposes illumination-efficient iris image capturing method. face capture method for extraction of iris pattern with one high resolution camera needs a large scale near infrared illumination. we replace high-resolution camera with co-optic-axial combination between wide view camera and narrow view camera. because this method needs small scale illumination that illuminate only narrow camera viewing angle, we can capture iris pattern image with small scale near infrared illumination.

  • The recent development of electro-optic devices and anticorrosion media has made it necessary investigate infrared optical systems with solid-solid interfaces of materials with amorphous characteristics. One of the most promising classes of materials for these purposes seems to be chalcogenide glasses, which are based on the Ge_Sb_Se system, have drawn much attention because of their use in preparing optical lenses and fibers that are transparent in the range of 3-12 um. In this study, a standard melt-quenching technique was used to prepare amorphous Ge_Sb_Sechalcogenideto be used in the design and manufacture of infrared optical products. The results of structural, optical, and surface roughness analyses of high purity Ge_Sb_Sechalcogenide glasses after various annealing processes reported.

  • The recent development of electro-optic devices and anticorrosion media has led to the necessity to investigate infrared optical systems with solid-solid interfaces of materials that often have the characteristic of amorphousness. One of the most promising classes of materials for those purposes seems to be the chalcogenide glasses. Chalcogenide glasses, based on the Ge-Sb-Se system, have drawn a great deal of attention because of their use in preparing optical lenses and transparent fibers in the range of 3~12 um. In this study, amorphous Ge-Sb-Se chalcogenide for application in an infrared optical product design and manufacture was prepared by a standard melt-quenching technique. The results of the structural, optical and surface roughness analysis of high purity Ge-Sb-Se chalcogenide glasses are reported after various annealing processes.

  • Time resolved infrared IR absorption spectroscopy is carried out to investigate the dynamics of electric field induced reorientation of the biphenyl molecular core and alkyl tail sub-fragments of the nematic liquid crystal 5CB (4-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl). The planar to homeotropic transition for high pre-tilt planar aligned cells, is studied for switching times ranging from 200 ${\mu}sec$ down to 80 ${\mu}sec$, the latter a factor of 1000 times faster than any previous nematic IR study. The reorientation rates of the core and tail are found to be the same to within experimental error and scale inversely with applied field squared, as expected for the balance of field and viscous torques. Thus any molecular conformation change during switching must relax on a shorter time scale. A simple model shows that no substantial differences exist between the reorientational dynamics of the tails and cores on the time scales longer than on the order of 10 ${\mu}s$.

  • The amount of water for the cultivation of citrus is different based on the growing period. The water content in the leaves of citrus can be a index for watering during cultivation. The purpose of this study is to determine non-destructively the water content of Citrus leaves by using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Citrus leaves were prepared from satsuma mandarin leaves (Citrus unshiu Marc. var. okitsu) ranging from 62.20 to 69.98% of water content by loss on drying, NIR reflectance spectra of Citrus leaves were acquired by using a fiber optic probe. • Stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial lesion is well established since the Lars Leksell first introduced radiosurgery concept in 1951 Its use in the treatment of spinal lesion has been limited by the availability of effective immobilization devices. The first clinical experience of the spinal stereotactic radiosurgery technique was reported by Hamilton AJ. in 1995. Recently, Optic-guided patient positioning technique for extracranial stereotactic radiosurgery was developed and reported. This study is for assess the target positioning accuracy of the optic guided patient positioning system Exactrac (BrainLab., Inc, Germany). We have designed phantom for assess the accuracy of spinal stereotactic radiosurgery The infrared reflective body markers attached to the relatively immobile part of the body and a series of 2 mm CT images was taken. The image sets were transferred to the planning computer. During the radiosurgery treatment, we measure the real-time display showing the positioning values from Exactrac computer. And we compare the isocenter deviation from irradiated center point of the film which was mounted on the lesion site of the phantom and pin hole site of that film. The accuracy of the ExacTrac system in positioning a target point shows enough for the clinical applications.
