  • Objectives: This study investigated the effects of the color components of light-cured composite resin before and after polymerization on degree of conversion (DC) and biaxial flexural strength (FS). Materials and Methods: Four enamel shades (A1, A2, A3, A4) and two dentin shades (A2O, A3O) of Premisa (Kerr Co.) and Denfil (Vericom Co.) were evaluated on their CIE $L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$ color components using the spectrophotometer before curing, after curing and at 7 day. The DC of same specimens were measured with Near-infrared spectrometer (Nexus, Thermo Nicolet Co.) at 2 hr after cure and at 7 day. Finally, the FS was obtained after all the other measurements were completed at 7 day. The correlations between each color component and DC and FS were evaluated. Results: The light-curing of composite resin resulted in color changes of Premisa in red-blue direction and Denfil in green-blue direction. The DC and FS were affected by product, time and shade (3-way ANOVA, p < 0.05) and product and shade (2-way ANOVA, p < 0.05), respectively. Premisa only showed a significant correlation between the DC and CIE $a^*$ component - before and after polymerization (Pearson product moment correlation, p < 0.05). The FS of Premisa showed significant negative correlations with CIE $a^*$ and CIE $b^*$ components. Conclusions: The DC and FS of the light-curing composite resin were affected by the color components of the material before and after polymerization.

  • It has been widely used ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for the biomaterials due to its excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In the case of blend of UHMPE with another polymeric biomaterials, however, UHMWPE might have low blend compatibility due to surface inertness. In this study, in order to improve the mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement by means of the impregnation of UHMWPE powder, we developed the novel surface modification method by the mixture of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and xylene. We investigated the variation of composition of MMA/xylene. It was confirmed by the analysis of Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance, scanning electron microscope, universal transverse mercator, and digital thermometer. The maximum mechanical strength of surface modified UHMWPE powder impregnated PMMA bone cement compound was observed the ratio of 1 : 1 (v/v%) MMA/xylene. Also its curing temperature decreased from 103 $^{\circ}C$ to 58 ∼ 73 $^{\circ}C$ The mechanism of surface modification of UHMWPE powder by the mixture of MMA/xylene has been proposed.

  • In this work, the effect of cationic initiator content on the electron-beam (EB) curing process of diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) resin was studied using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and critical stress intensity factor $(K_{IC})$. Benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate (BQH) were used as an initiator and its content was varied from 0.5 to 3 phr. NIRS measurements showed that the hydroxyl group of EB-cured epoxy resin was increased with increasing the BQH content. Thermal stability and $K_{IC}$ value of EB-cured epoxy resin were increased with increasing the BQH content but were decreased above 2 phr content. These results could be attributed to the decrease of the conversion and degree of crosslinking. In another word, the conversion and degree of crosslinking were restricted by the incomplete network structure from high reactivity at the BQH content above 2 phr, resulting in decreasings of thermal stability and $K_{IC}$.

  • The multistep mechanism of photosensitized curing reaction cinnamoylated photosensitive polymer is proposed from the energy level diagram of cinnamic acid and sensitizer, and from the fact that excess of sensitizer brings the sensitivity to a limiting value etc. Various factors which have effects on the ability of sensitizer are also discussed. The mechanism involves following steps: activation to the first excited singlet states of cinnamoyl group(C) and sensitizer(S) by their absorption of photon, their intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet state, bimolecular internal quenching by formation of excimer of sensitizer, triplet excitation energy transfer and intermolecular addition between cinnamoyl group in ground state and that in triplet state. The rate equation derived from this mechanism is $-\frac{d[C]}{dt} = \frac{K_1[C]}{K_2 + [C]}[\frac{I^c_{abs}}{K_3 + [S]} + \frac{K_4[C]}{(K_5 + [C])(K_6 + [S])}(I^s_{abs} + \frac{K_7I^c_{abs}[S]}{K_8 + [S]})]$ where $I^c_{abs}\;and\;I^s_{abs}$: the rates of absorption of photon by cinnamoyl group and sensitizer $K_n$: Constants. It is proved with the cinnamate of poly(glyceryl phthalate)(PGC) in the absence of sensitizer using the infrared analytical method and successfully applied for the experimental data reported on the effects of the degree of cinnamoyl esterification and the concentration of sensitizer upon the sensitivity.

  • The physical properties of polymer are greatly influenced by the extent to which a resin cures. The presence of un reacted monomer can, have a plasticizing effect on the polymer, thereby altering the physical and mechanical properties of dentin bonding agent (DBA). If the DBA does not polymerize sufficiently, it will leave a weak bonding layer and lead to lower bond strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strengths(SBS) and the degree of conversion (DC) of 4 commercialy avilable dentin bonding systems which are composed of 2 multi-bottle systems [Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP), AeliteBond(AB)] and 2 onebottle systems [SingleBond(SB), One-Step(OS)]. For shear bond strength measurement, labial surfaces of freshly extracted bovine incisors were ground with # 600 grit SiC paper to expose dentin. Four different groups of samples were formed, with 10 samples. being made for each of the 4 commercial DBA in each group according to the curing sequences of DBA and overlayer thickness of composites: Group I (standard cure and 1mm thick composites) : The DBA was light cured and the composites of 1mm thickness was applied ; Group II (standard cure and 2mm thick composites) : The DBA was light cured and the composites of 2mm thickness was applied; Group III (simultaneous cure and 1mm thick composites) : The DBA was not light-cured and simultaneously cured with composites of 1mm thickness; Group N (simultaneous cure and 2mm thick composites) : The DBA was. not light-cured and simultaneously cured with composites of 2mm thickness. The SBS was measured immediately after the composites was bonded to the bovine dentin using an Instron machine. The DC of the DBA was examined in a thin film under simulated conditions of the experimental groups according to the curing sequences and overlayer thickness of composites in the SBS test. using a Fourier transform Infrared(FTIR) spectrometer. The following results were obtained from SBS tests and DC measurements 1. In SBS tests, the multi-bottle DBA(SMP, AB) had a generally higher bond strength values than the one bottle DBA(SB, OS). In DC measurements, the one bottle DBA(SB, OS) had a significantly higher DC than the multi-bottle DBA(SMP, AB). 2. In all DBAs except OS, there was no significant difference between the bond strength of group I (standard cure and 1mm thick composites) and that of group III (simultaneous cure and 1mm thick composites). SMP, SB in Group I had a significantly higher DC than those in group III, but AB, OS in group I had a significantly lower DC than those in group III 3. All DBAs in Goup II (standard cure and 2mm thick composites) had significantly higher bond strength and DC than those in Group N (simultaneous cure and 2mm thick composites). 4. In all DBAs, there was no significantly different SBS and DC between Group I and Group II, but all DBAs in Group III had significantly higher SBS and DC than those in Group IV.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of camphorquinone (CQ)-amine ratio on the C=C double bond conversion of resins with binary and ternary photoinitiation systems. Materials and Methods: Two monomer mixtures (37.5 Bis-GMA/37.5 Bis- EMA/25 TEGDMA) with binary systems (CQ/DMAEMA in weight ratio, group A [0.5/1.0] and B [1.0/0.5]) and four mixtures with ternary system (CQ/OPPI/DMAEMA, group C [0.1/1.0/0.1], D [0.1/1.0/ 0.2], E [0.2/1.0/0.1] and F [0.2/1.0/0.2]) were tested: 1 : 2 or 2 : 1 CQ-amine ratio in binary system, while 1 : 1 ratio was added in ternary system. The monomer mixture was cured for 5, 20, 40, and 300 sec with a Demetron 400 curing unit (Demetron). After each exposure time, degree of conversion (DC) was estimated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer (Nicolet 520, Nicolet Instrument Corp.). The results were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Scheffe test, with p = 0.05 as the level of significance. Results: DC (%) was expressed in the order of curing time (5, 20, 40, and 300 sec). Group A ($14.63{\pm}10.42$, $25.23{\pm}6.32$, $51.62{\pm}2.69$, $68.52{\pm}2.77$); Group B ($4.04{\pm}6.23$, $16.56{\pm}3.38$, $37.95{\pm}2.79$, $64.48{\pm}1.21$); Group C ($16.87{\pm}5.72$, $55.47{\pm}2.75$, $60.83{\pm}2.07$, $68.32{\pm}3.31$); Group D ($23.77{\pm}1.64$, $61.05{\pm}1.82$, $65.13{\pm}2.09$, $71.87{\pm}1.17$); Group E ($28.66{\pm}2.92$, $56.68{\pm}1.33$, $60.66{\pm}1.17$, $68.78{\pm}1.30$); Group F ($39.74{\pm}6.31$, $61.07{\pm}2.58$, $64.22{\pm}2.29$, $69.94{\pm}2.15$). Conclusion: All the monomers with ternary photoinitiation system showed higher DC than the ones with binary system, until 40 sec. Concerning about the effect of CQ-amine ratio on the DC, group A converted into polymer more than group B in binary system. However, there was no significant difference among groups with ternary system, except group C when cured for 5 sec only.

  • The structural and useful characteristics of silk habutae treated with silicone resin by emulsion finishing method were studied. The results were obtained through crease recovery test, water repellency test, scanning micrograph observation, amino acid analysis, X-Ray diffraction analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The results are summarized as follows; 1) The improvement in crease recovery of silk habutae finished with silicone resin, was observed b soaping treatment and curing conditions. 2) The higher water repellency and stiffness in silk fabrics finished with silicone resin was found by the fabric inspection and the scanning electron microscopic observation. It is suggested that silicone resin impregnated into the void of silk fibroin. 3) The polar side chains of amino acid composition were decreased, when the silicone resin was treated on silk fibroin. 4) Through Amino acid analysis of silicone resin finished fibroin, the different amounts of amino acid composition was indicated due to silk fibroin silicone polymer reaction and the structural difference of its fibroin were also proved by X-ray diffractograms. 5) The functionality of the siloxane compound may be deduced from the silicone finished silk habutae by Fourier Transform Spectroscopy. It was concluded from the above results that the useful characteristics of silk fabric can be improved by silicone resin finishing.

  • New photopolymers were designed and prepared using the photosensitive polymer binders. The photochemical reaction of the photosensitive polymer binder was studied by virtue of UV absorption and infrared spectroscopy. The holographic gratings were successfully fabricated in these photopolymer film samples by conventional optical interference method. We also investigated the effect of photocrosslink in the polymer binder on the diffraction behavior of the photopolymer. The dynamic behaviors of the grating formation were studied with the change of exposure intensity in terms of the diffraction efficiency. Particularly, we focused our efforts to observe the variation of the diffraction efficiency during post UV curing process.

  • The conventional model did not take momentum conservation into consideration when the electron absorbs and emits the photons. II-ray provides momentum conservations on any directions of the entering photons, and also the electrons have radial momentum conservations and fully elastic bouncing between two atoms, in the new atom model. Conventional atom model must be criticized on the following four points. (1) Natural motions between positive and negative entities are not circular motions but linear going and returning ones, for examples sexual motion, tidal motion, day and night etc. Because the radius of hydrogen atom's electron orbit is the order of 10$^{-11}$ m and the radia of the nucleons in the nucleus are the order of 10$^{-l4}$m and then the converging n-gamma rays to the nucleus have so great circular momentum, the electron can not have a circular motion. We can say without doubt that any elementary mass particle can have only linear motion because of the n-rays' hindrances, near the nucleus. (2) Potential energy generation was neglected when electron changes its orbit from outer one to inner one. The h v is the kinetic energy of the photo-electron. The total energy difference between orbits comprises kinetic and potential energies. (3) The structure of the space must be taken into consideration because the properties of the electron do not change during the transition from outer orbit to inner one even though it produces photon. (4) Total energy conservation law applies to the energy flow between mind and matter because we daily experiences a interconnection between mind and body. An understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the control of normal proliferation and differentiation of the various cell types which make up the human body will undoubtedly allow a greater insight into the abnormal growth of cells, A large body of biochemical evidence was eventually used to generate a receptor model with an external ligand binding domain linked through a single trans-membrane domain to the cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase and autophosphory-lation domains. The ligand induced conformational change in the external domain generates either a push-pull or rotational signal which is transduced from the outside to the inside of cell.l.ell.

  • Semiconductor quantum dots are of great interest for both fundamental research and industrial applications due to their unique size dependant properties. The most promising application of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots or QDs) is probably as emitters in biomedical labeling, LEDs, lasers etc. As compared to II-VI quantum dots, III-V have attracted greater interest owing to their less ionic lattice, larger exciton diameters and reduced toxicity. Among the III-V semiconductor quantum dots, Indium Phosphide (InP) is a popular material due to its bulk band gap of 1.35 (eV) which is responsible for the photoluminescence emission wavelength ranging from blue to near infrared with change in size of QDs. Nevertheless, in recent years, the exact type of collective properties that arise when semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are assembled into two- or three-dimensional arrays has drawn much interest. The term "uantum dot solids" is used to indicate three-dimensional assemblies of semiconductor QDs. The optoelectronic properties of the quantum dot solids are known to depend on the electronic structure of the individual quantum dot building blocks and on their electronic interactions. This paper reports an efficient and rapid method to produce highly luminescent and monodisperse quantum dots solution and solid through fabrication of InP thin films. By varying the molar concentration of Indium to Ligand, QDs of different size were prepared. The absorption and emission behaviors were also studied. Similar measurements were also performed on InP quantum dot solid by fabricating InP thin films. The optical properties of the thin films are measured at different curing temperatures which show a blue shift with increase in temperature. The dielectric properties of the thin films were also investigated by Capacitance-voltage(C-V) measurements in a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) device.
