  • In this paper, the evaluation method for the responsivity and noise characteristics of an infrared thermal imaging camera was presented. Signal transfer function and noise equivalent temperature difference of the infrared thermal imaging camera were obtained by using a differential mode blackbody that is able to control the temperature difference ${\Delta}$T between an infrared target and its background. And we verified the suitability of our evaluation method through comparison between the found noise equivalent temperature difference and the specification of the camera. In addition, the difference of 0.01 K of the two noise equivalent temperature differences calculated from with and without nonuniformity correction suggests that the nonuniformity correction is essential process for the evaluation of the infrared thermal imaging camera.

  • Infrared thermography using high-speed infrared camera has been recognized as a powerful method for various potential applications, such as nondestructive inspection, failure analysis, stress analysis, and medical fields, due to non-contact, high-speed, and high spatial resolution at various temperature ranges. In this investigation, damage evolution due to generation of hot spots on railway brake disc was investigated using the infrared thermography method. A high-speed infrared camera was used to measure the surface temperature of brake disc as well as for in-situ monitoring of hot spot evolution. From the thermographic images, the observed hot spots and thermal damage of railway brake disc during braking operation were qualitatively analyzed. Moreover, in this investigation, the previous experimental and theoretical studies on hot spots phenomenon were reviewed, and the current experimental results were introduced and compared with theoretical prediction.

  • We have constructed a near-infrared imaging camera which is attached to the prime focus of 105cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory. The camera is equipped with a 1040$\times$1040 PtSi CSD array developed by Mitsubishi Electric Co. The combination of Kiso Schmidt and the array gives a wide field of view of 18.4'$\times$18.4' with a reasonable spatial resolution of 1.06' /pixel. The system performances of the camera have been evaluated through laboratory and observational tests. Low noise, good cosmetics(no defect pixels), and good stability of the camera system show an excellent performance for astronomical use.

  • The researchers, who seek geological and environmental information, depend on the remote sensing and aerial photographic datum from various commercial satellites and aircraft. However, the adverse weather conditions and the expensive equipment can restrict that the researcher can collect their data anywhere and any time. To allow for better flexibility, we have developed a compact, a multispectral automatic Aerial photographic system. This system's Multi-spectral camera can catch the visible (RGB) and infrared (NIR) bands (3032${\ast}$2008 pixel) image. Our system consists of a thermal infrared camera and automatic balance control, and it managed and controlled by a palm-top computer. And it includes a camera gimbals system, GPS receiver, weather sensor and etc. As a result, we have successfully tested its ability to acquire aerial photography, weather data, as well as GPS data, making it a very flexible tool for environmental data monitoring.

  • This paper describes a new sensor system for 3D range measurement using the structured infrared light. Environment and obstacle sensing is the key issue for mobile robot localization and navigation. Laser scanners and infrared scanners cover $180^{\circ}$ and are accurate but too expensive. Those sensors use rotating light beams so that the range measurements are constrained on a plane. 3D measurements are much more useful in many ways for obstacle detection, map building and localization. Stereo vision is very common way of getting the depth information of 3D environment. However, it requires that the correspondence should be clearly identified and it also heavily depends on the light condition of the environment. Instead of using stereo camera, monocular camera and the projected infrared light are used in order to reduce the effects of the ambient light while getting 3D depth map. Modeling of the projected light pattern enabled precise estimation of the range. Identification of the cells from the pattern is the key issue in the proposed method. Several methods of correctly identifying the cells are discussed and verified with experiments.

  • A system of infrared camera optics with wide field of view and anamorphic lenses is proposed, and its validity verified through manufacture. The infrared camera produced provides a wide field of view of over 100 degrees in the horizontal direction, and an even greater magnification in the vertical direction. As a result, the system can have a wider surveillance range and improved detection ability at the same time. In addition, a new optomechanical automatic athermalization mechanism is proposed and applied to the infrared camera. Its performance and utility is proved through testing.

  • In this paper, we propose a new real-time dead pixel detection method based on spatial compare filtering, which are usually used in the small target detection. Actually, the soft dead and the small target are cast in the same mold. Our proposed method detect and remove the dead pixels as applying the spatial compare filtering, into the pixel outputs of a detector after the non-uniformity correction. Therefore, we proposed method can effectively detect and replace the dead pixels regardless of the non-uniformity correction performance. In infrared camera, there are usually many dead detector pixels which produce abnormal output caused by manufactural process or operational environment. There are two kind of dead pixel. one is hard dead pixel which electronically generate abnormal outputs and other is soft dead pixel which changed and generated abnormal outputs by the planning process. Infrared camera have to perform non-uniformity correction because of structural and material properties of infrared detector. The hard dead pixels whose offset values obtained by non-uniformity correction are much larger or smaller than the average can be detected easily as dead pixels. However, some dead pixels(soft dead pixel) can remain, because of the difficulty of uncleared decision whether normal pixel or abnormal pixel.

  • In this paper, a method is tested to measure temperatures in high-temperature welds. Protective glass was installed between an infrared thermal imaging camera and a heat source, and temperature compensation was applied to the measuring instruments. When the temperature of halogen lamps was taken in real-time and measured by the thermal camera, the temperature was found to be almost invariant with the distance between the camera and heat source. The temperature range could be predicted, through correlations with the thickness of the protective glass and the measured distance. This study suggests that the temperature measurement of welds obtained by using an infrared thermal imaging camera is valid, through experimental testing of heat sources.

  • Typical operating method for long-range observation cameras are to detect the target at a wide angle of view and to recognize/identify the target with a telephoto angle of view. And the detection/recognition range performance is an important item to evaluate the performance of the defense infrared camera. To increased the detection range performance, the camera's field of view should be narrowed. Due to the narrow field of view, the probability of finding target is relatively low. In this paper, we propose a method to search for target by providing a wide angle view while maintaining detection range performance. M&S and optimized design were used to develop infrared camera with extended field of view and the results of the test summarized.

  • The establishment of the investigation and the maintenance technique is required for preservation of old structures in Japan. This study attempts to diagnose the deterioration status of the historic structures using the thermal infrared camera. In some structures, the difference of the spatio-temporal change was observed in the surface temperature. For example, the cold joint of concrete was examined using this method effectively. As a result of this study, we have found useful guidelines in developing methodology to conduct diagnosis of historic buildings by using thermal infrared camera.
