  • The paper describes the application areas of the hypertext and the relevance of hypertext principles to the information retrieval system. As to the techniques of the hypertext information retrieval the various navigation method including a guided tour, a history list, a browser, a book-mark, etc. are discussed. The query system is considered as the other technique to be integrated into the hypertext system for the enhancement of the interactive function of the information retrieval. Based on the theoretical background, a conceptual model of hypertext information retrieval system was constructed using GUIDE which was developed by P.J. Brown of Kent University. 16 bibliographic records from LISA of 1991(June) were used for the illustration of the basic operation of the system. Though the study could not reach the implementation level due to the absolute constraints of the time and experimental environments, further efforts will continue to develop a prototype system of a hypertext information retrieval. A few conclusions can be derived from the study : (1) The integration of the hypertext into the information retrieval system can be justified by permitting the end-users to have much stronger and more flexible interaction with the system. (2) The more the degree of the sofistication of the existing information retrieval system is the more the possibility of the development of an effective and user-oriented information retrieval system will be greater by integrating guide as a front end system to the underlying software. (3) The deep knowledge about the functions of information retrieval which can be enhanced by the hypertext could be acquired by the information retrieval specialists.

  • This study does a qualitative and quantitative analysis of how music by humming is being used by music educators in the classroom. Music by humming is part division of music information retrieval. In order to define what a music information retrieval system is first I need to define what it is. Berger and Lafferty (1999) define information retrieval as "someone doing a query to a retrieval system, a user begins with an information need. This need is an ideal document- perfect fit for the user, but almost certainly not present in the retrieval system's collection of documents. From this ideal document, the user selects a group of identifying terms. In the context of traditional IR, one could view this group of terms as akin to expanded query." Music Information Retrieval has its background in information systems, data mining, intelligent systems, library science, music history and music theory. Three rounds of surveys using question pro where completed. The study found that there were variances in knowledge, training and level of awareness of query by humming, music information retrieval systems. Those variance relationships where based on music specialty, level that they teach, and age of the respondents.

  • Recently, to overcome the limit of keyword based retrieval system, the study based structured document has been studied. But it is hard for structured retrieval system to adapt a real service, in this paper, we propose a method of retrieval mechanism for the fulltext of XML documents. We explain DTD of XML based report, extracting navigation information and planing to adapt the retrieval system for article retrieval. Using the fulttext retrieval scheme, suggested system can be an alternative plan of professional structured based retrieval system.

  • In attempting to respond to boolean retrieval system's limitations, this paper presents the design of a retrieval system using fuzzy logic. The fuzzy retrieval system introduces the weights of terms in the documents and in the query and makes use of them to determine how much relevant a document is to the given query. After comparing and analyzing the previous researches, an effective model of the fuzzy retrieval system is suggested and the performance of the system is evaluated through actual examples.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a multimedia information system integrating hypermdia, information retrieval, and DBMS technologies. We browse the information space through hypermedia link navigation and also use ad hoc queries for direct retrieval of information from the database. Both the hypermedia and the information retrieval systems are integrated into a database management system (DMBS) so that concurrent edition, update, and retrieval of documents can have the ACID properties of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. We will first explain the architecture of the system and then, describe how the hypermedia system is integrated with information retrieval capability, and finally integrated with DBMS capabilities.

  • The similar bibliographic retrieval system follows whether it selects a thing of the extracted index term and or not the difference in which the similar document retrieval system There be many in the search result is generated. In this research, the method minimally making the error of the selection of the extracted candidate index term is provided In this research, the word information in which it is adjacent by using candidate index terms extracted from the similar literature and the keyword topic information were used. And by using the related author information and the reranking method of the search result, the similar bibliographic system in which an accuracy is high was developed. In this paper, we conducted experiments for similar bibliographic retrieval system on a collection of Korean journal articles of science and technology arena. The performance of similar bibliographic retrieval system was proved through an experiment and user evaluation.

  • Retrieval effectiveness is the principal criterion for measuring the performance of an information retrieval system. The effectiveness of a retrieval system depends primarily on the extent to which it can retrieve wanted documents without retrieving unwanted ones. So, ultimately, effectiveness is a function of the relevant and nonrelevant documents retrieved. Consequently, 'relevance' of information to the user's request has become one of the most fundamental concept encountered in the theory of information retrieval. Although there is at present no consensus as to how this notion should be defined, relevance has been widely used as a meaningful quantity and an adequate criterion for measures of the evaluation of retrieval effectiveness. The recall and precision among various parameters based on the 'two-by-two' table (or, contingency table) were major considerations in this paper, because it is assumed that recall and precision are sufficient for the measurement of effectiveness. Accordingly, different concepts of 'relevance' and 'pertinence' of documents to user requests and their proper usages were investigated even though the two terms have unfortunately been used rather loosely in the literature. In addition, a number of variables affecting the recall and precision values were discussed. Some conclusions derived from this study are as follows: Any notion of retrieval effectiveness is based on 'relevance' which itself is extremely difficult to define. Recall and precision are valuable concepts in the study of any information retrieval system. They are, however, not the only criteria by which a system may be judged. The recall-precision curve represents the average performance of any given system, and this may vary quite considerably in particular situations. Therefore, it is possible to some extent to vary the indexing policy, the indexing policy, the indexing language, or the search methodology to improve the performance of the system in terms of recall and precision. The 'inverse relationship' between average recall and precision could be accepted as the 'fundamental law of retrieval', and it should certainly be used as an aid to evaluation. Finally, there is a limit to the performance(in terms of effectiveness) achievable by an information retrieval system. That is : "Perfect retrieval is impossible."

  • Players of construction projects proceed with each work process by information gathering, modification and communication. Due to the complex and long-span lifecycle projects increased, it became more important to grasp this mechanism for the successful project performance in construction project. Hence, most project information management systems or knowledge management systems equip information retrieval system. There are two logic to infer the meaning of retrieval target; inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. The former is based on metadata explaining the target and the later is based on relation between data. To infer the information flow, it is necessary to define the correlation between players and work processes. However, most established information retrieval systems are based on index search system and it is not focused on correlation between data but data itself. Thus, this research aims to research on process of information flow retrieval system for large-scale construction projects.

  • Information is an essential factor leading the rapid progress which is one of the distinguished characteristics in modem society. As more information is required and as more is supplied by individuals, governmental units, businesses, and educational institutions, the greater will be the requirement for efficient methods of communication. One possibility for improving the information dissemination process is to use computers. The capabilities of such machine are beginning to be used in the process of Information storage, retrieval and dissemination. An important problems, that must be carefully examined is whether one technique for information retrieval is better for worse than another. This paper examines problem of how to evaluate an information retrieval system. One specific approach is a cost accounting model for use in studying how to minimize the cost of operating a mechanized retrieval system. Through the use of cost analysis, the model provides a method for comparative evaluation between systems. The general cost accounting model of the literature retrieval system being designed by this study are given below. 1. The total cost accounting model of the literature retrieval system. The total cost of the literature retrieval system = (the cost per unit of user time X the amount of user time) + ( the cost per unit of system time X the amount of system time) 2. System cost accounting model system cost = (the pre-search system cost per unit of time X time) + (the search system cost per unit of time X time) + (the post search system cost per unit of time X time) 1) Pre-search system cost per unit of time = cost of channel per unit time + cost of central processing unit per unit time + cost of storage per unit time 2) Search system cost per unit of time = comparison cost + document representation cost. 3) Post-search system cost per unit of time. = cost of channel per unit time + cost of central processing unit per unit time + cost of storage per unit time 3. User cost accounting model Total user cost = [pre-search user cost per unit of time X (time + additional time) ] + [search user cost per unit of time X (time + additional time) ] + [post-search user cost per unit of time X (time + additional time) ].

  • In this paper, we propose the content-based music information retrieval system with improved retrieval speed and stable performance while maintaining resonable retrieval accuracy In order to solve the in-stable system problem multi-feature clustering (MFC) is used to setup robust music DB. In addition, the music retrieval speed was improved by using the Superclass concept. Effectiveness of the system with SuperClass and without SuperClass is compared in terms of retrieval speed, accuracy and retrieval precision. It is demonstrated that the use of WC and Superclass substantially improves music retrieval speed up to $20\%\~40\%$ while maintaining almost equal retrieval accuracy.
