Developing a National Data Metrics Framework for Learning Analytics in Korea

  • Educational applications of big data analysis have been of interest in order to improve learning effectiveness and efficiency. As a basic challenge for educational applications, the purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive data set scheme for learning analytics in the context of digital textbook usage within the K-12 school environments of Korea. On the basis of the literature review, the Start-up Mega Planning model of needs assessment methodology was used as this study sought to come up with negotiated solutions for different stakeholders for a national level of learning metrics framework. The Ministry of Education (MOE), Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE), and Korean Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) were involved in the discussion of the learning metrics framework scope. Finally, we suggest a proposal for the national learning metrics framework to reflect such considerations as dynamic education context and feasibility of the metrics into the K-12 Korean schools. The possibilities and limitations of the suggested framework for learning metrics are discussed and future areas of study are suggested.

CANVAS: A Cloud-based Research Data Analytics Environment and System

  • In this paper, we propose CANVAS (Creative ANalytics enVironment And System), an analytics system of the National Research Data Platform (DataON). CANVAS is a personalized analytics cloud service for researchers who need computing resources and tools for research data analysis. CANVAS is designed in consideration of scalability based on micro-services architecture and was built on top of open-source software such as eGovernment Standard framework (Spring framework), Kubernetes, and JupyterLab. The built system provides personalized analytics environments to multiple users, enabling high-speed and large-capacity analysis by utilizing high-performance cloud infrastructure (CPU/GPU). More specifically, modeling and processing data is possible in JupyterLab or GUI workflow environment. Since CANVAS shares data with DataON, the research data registered by users or downloaded data can be directly processed in the CANVAS. As a result, CANVAS enhances the convenience of data analysis for users in DataON and contributes to the sharing and utilization of research data.

Exploring Barriers Affecting e-Health Service Continuance Intention in India: From the Innovation Resistance Theory Stance

  • Although existing studies on e-health have usually focused on e-health services adoption intention, there is a dearth of studies on the barriers that affect e-health services retention intention especially in India. Additionally, although studies have mostly focused on utilizing expectation-confirmation model to understand innovation related barriers, innovation resistance theory (IRT) has been overlooked. As Indian e-health service providers face stiff challenges due to customer's unwillingness to continue using the service, there is a need to bridge the research gap that exists in this context. This mixed-method study, based on responses received from 289 participants and 1154 online negative reviews from e-Health providers in India, examines the barriers from the IRT stance. Results of this study reveal a notable negative association between tradition, value and financial barrier and intention to continue using e-health services. Additionally, continuance intention affects recommendation. The study concludes with various implications and scope for future research.

  • The spread of cloud computing, digital computing, and the popular social media platforms have led to increased growth of data. That growth of data results in what is known as big data (BD), which seen as one of the most strategic resources. The analysis of these BD has allowed generating value from massive raw data that helps in making effective decisions and providing quality of service. With Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia seeks to invest in BD technologies, but many challenges and barriers have led to delays in adopting BD. This research paper aims to search in the state of Big Data Analytics (BDA) in Saudi higher education sector, identify the barriers by reviewing the literature, and then to apply the design-reality gap model to assess these barriers that prevent effective use of big data and highlights priority areas for action to accelerate the application of BD to comply with Vision 2030.

  • As competition in the airline industry intensifies, effective airline service quality evaluation has become one of the main challenges. In particular, as big data analytics has been touted as a new research paradigm, new research on service quality measurement using online review analysis has been attempted. However, these studies do not use review titles for analysis, relyon supervised learning that requires a lot of human intervention in learning, and do not consider airline characteristics in classifying service quality dimensions.To overcome the limitations of existing studies, this study attempts to measure airlines service quality and to classify it into the AIRQUAL service quality dimension using online review text as well as title based on self-trainingand sentiment analysis. The results show the way of effective extracting service quality dimensions of AIRQUAL from online reviews, and find that each service quality dimension have a significant effect on service satisfaction. Furthermore, the effect of review title on service satisfaction is also found to be significant. This study sheds new light on service quality measurement in airline industry by using an advanced analytical approach to analyze effects of service quality on customer satisfaction. This study also helps managers who want to improve customer satisfaction by providing high quality service in airline industry.

A Study on Job Satisfaction/Retention Factors and Job Unsatisfaction/Turnover Factors by Industries using Job Reviews (직무 리뷰 분석을 통한 산업군별 직무만족/존속 요인 및 직무불만족/이직 요인에 관한 연구)

  • Keeping good, talented people is one of the most significant factors in a company's success. HR analytics is an important area for applying big data analysis techniques to human resources. It provides organizational insight that enables effective management of employees, allowing management to reach their business goals quickly and efficiently. Job satisfaction and employee turnover analysis are the keys to HR analytics. Job review web services have been becoming popular. Because people exchange information about job satisfaction and turnover through these web services, useful information about HR Analytics is accumulated on the job review web sites. In this paper, we identified factors of employee retention by analyzing a Job Satisfaction/Retention group, and the factors of employee turnover by analyzing a Job Unsatisfaction/Turnover group. In order to do this, we first classified employees according to whether their self-reported job satisfaction or turnover was true. We collected and analyzed data from Jobplanet, a popular job review site. Through dominance analysis and LDA topic modeling, we found major factors, topics, and keywords of the classified groups by IT, service, and manufacturing domains. Our approach is a novel model to apply the analysis of reviews and text mining to the HR domain, and it will be practically helpful for setting new strategies that improve job satisfaction.

Data Analytics in Education : Current and Future Directions (빅데이터를 활용한 맞춤형 교육 서비스 활성화 방안연구)

  • Massive increases in data available to an organization are creating a new opportunity for competitive advantage. In this era of big data, developing analytics capabilities, therefore, becomes critical to take advantage of internal and external data and gain insights for data-driven decision making. However, the use of data in education is in its infancy, in comparison with business and government, and the potential for data analytics to impact education services is growing. In this paper, I survey how universities are currently using education data to improve students' performance and administrative efficiency, and propose new ways of extending the current use. In addition, with the so-called data scientist shortage, universities should be able to train professionals with data analytics skills. This paper discusses which skills are valuable to data scientists and introduces various training and certification programs offered by universities and industry. I finally conclude the paper by exploring new curriculums where students, by themselves, can learn how to find and use relevant data even in any courses.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the trends in big data. Research abstracts were extracted from 4,019 articles, published between 1995 and 2018, on Web of Science and were analyzed using topic modeling and time series analysis. The 20 single-term topics that appeared most frequently were as follows: model, technology, algorithm, problem, performance, network, framework, analytics, management, process, value, user, knowledge, dataset, resource, service, cloud, storage, business, and health. The 20 multi-term topics were as follows: sense technology architecture (T10), decision system (T18), classification algorithm (T03), data analytics (T17), system performance (T09), data science (T06), distribution method (T20), service dataset (T19), network communication (T05), customer & business (T16), cloud computing (T02), health care (T14), smart city (T11), patient & disease (T04), privacy & security (T08), research design (T01), social media (T12), student & education (T13), energy consumption (T07), supply chain management (T15). The time series data indicated that the 40 single-term topics and multi-term topics were hot topics. This study provides suggestions for future research.

Global Manager - A Service Broker In An Integrated Cloud Computing, Edge Computing & IoT Environment

  • The emergence of technologies like Big data analytics, Industrial Internet of Things, Internet of Things, and applicability of these technologies in various domains leads to increased demand in the underlying execution environment. The demand may be for compute, storage, and network resources. These demands cannot be effectively catered by the conventional cloud environment, which requires an integrated environment. The task of finding an appropriate service provider is tedious for a service consumer as the number of service providers drastically increases and the services provided are heterogeneous in the specification. A service broker is essential to find the service provider for varying service consumer requests. Also, the service broker should be smart enough to make the service providers best fit for consumer requests, ensuring that both service consumer and provider are mutually beneficial. A service broker in an integrated environment named Global Manager is proposed in the paper, which can find an appropriate service provider for every varying service consumer request. The proposed Global Manager is capable of identification of parameters for service negotiation with the service providers thereby making the providers the best fit to the maximum possible extent for every consumer request. The paper describes the architecture of the proposed Global Manager, workflow through the proposed algorithms followed by the pilot implementation with sample datasets retrieved from literature and synthetic data. The experimental results are presented with a few of the future work to be carried out to make the Manager more sustainable and serviceable.

  • Big Data is a data analysis technology empowered by late advances in innovations and engineering. Cloud computing offers the guarantee of big data execution to little and medium measured organizations. Big Data preparing is performed through a programming worldview known as MapReduce. Normally, execution of the MapReduce worldview requires organized joined stockpiling and equal preparing. The computing needs of MapReduce writing computer programs are frequently past what little and medium measured business can submit. Cloud computing is on-request network admittance to computing assets, given by an external element. Normal arrangement models for cloud computing incorporate platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS), framework as a service (IaaS), and equipment as a service (HaaS).
