  • All the informatics textbooks of the fifth, sixth, seventh and revised curriculums have dealt with the structure and operation of information equipment. But there haven't been any discussions at all on the educational nature of this section involving the selection of what and how to teach. The purpose of this study was to examine 'the structure and operation of information equipment' sections of informatics textbooks from a perspective of modern curriculum to see whether there was any inquiry tendency in the textbooks. As a result of analyzing four textbooks, only one textbook turned out to be inquisitive. The findings of the study suggest that the importance of textbook content and the perspective of learning activities should be taken seriously when textbooks are produced, and the fact that in today's age marked by a global tend of fusion, informatics is one of the fundamental subjects to encourage students to examine themselves instead of just sticking to rote learning should be taken into consideration as well.

  • The revised informatics is to be compulsory for middle school students from 2018 according to 2015 revised curriculum. The concept of abstraction in informatics curriculum has common features and differences compared with general abstraction, however there is a mix of concepts in the current informatics textbook. The abstraction of computational thinking needs to connect with automation, so it is difficult to teach correct concept of abstraction with these textbooks. Therefore, this research conducted to investigate several informatics textbooks that were developed by the revised curriculum and to analyze the concept and examples of abstraction. As a result, some textbooks have that there is a mix of concepts about general abstraction and no connection with automation. This research suggests clarified abstraction and educational examples for cultivating computational thinking to improve this situation. This result will be basic recourse for the reconstruction of abstraction lesson to improving computational thinking.

  • In this research, Problem Solving and Programming - the chapter common among four different types of middle school informatics textbooks based on the national curriculum revised in 2015 - was analyzed to measure its effects on cultivating students' curiosities. Romey's analysis was applied to these textbooks on four analytic elements - texts, data, activities, and evaluation. The results showed that each type of textbook showed a differing degree of encouraging students' inquisitive tendencies on each analytic element; two out of four textbooks were well developed for texts, three for data, three for activities, and all four for evaluation. In terms of Romey's index points, two textbooks had low indexes of texts, such as 0.185 and 0.413. Data indices were extremely low in one textbook at 0.147. Three of four textbooks exhibited high indices of activities at 0.969, 0.608 and 0.627. Evaluation indices were high in all four textbooks at 1.333, 1.268, 1.274, and 0.764. These revised textbooks overall showed higher metrics than the previously designed textbooks with regards to promoting students' inquisitive nature.

  • Developing middle and high students' information literacy and creative problem-solving skills in this information-oriented society is very important and for this reason, the subject of informatics has been established. However, little research on creative problem solving literacy of informatics textbooks has been conducted. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to quantitatively analyze whether 'problem-solving methods and procedures' parts in informatics textbooks in middle schools present creative problem solving literacy or not and in what degree. Data were quantitatively analyzed using the Gil-Su Choi method. The result of data analysis indicated that all the textbooks turned out to be correct range in the category of the "composition of various learning activities," but got out of range in some categories such as "problem-solving process reflection" and "problem-solving strategy proposal". Also a few textbooks haven't satisfied in important indexes and activities. So, we suggest that more 'problem-solving process reflection' and 'problem-solving strategy proposal' parts should be included in the informatics textbook and more various forms of learning activities be utilized well as the ratio of activities needed primary and high mental processes be kept the balance.

  • Abstract In informatics subject, a good understanding of information representation and the structure of materials is the first step to acquire the basic principles of computer science. But few studies have ever focused on the educational significance of the structure of materials in informatics subject or how to organize materials in a manner to stimulate students to introspect. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the 'information representation and management' sections of informatics textbooks of the revised 2007 curriculum that have been in use since 2010 had an inquiry tendency or not. As a result of analyzing the textbooks by utilizing Romey method, one textbook was found to have an inquiry tendency in terms of texts, figures/diagrams, activities and questions at the end of chapters. If textbooks are just organized to convey knowledge, it might result in making students less interactive in class. Specifically, informatics is a subject to teach basic problem-solving skills by using IT, and the findings of the study suggest that students who get less interactive in class are likely to have less chances to learn about how to solve the given problems in diverse ways.
