Development of Selection Criteria for Informatics Textbooks in Middle School (중학교 정보 교과서의 선택 기준 개발)

  • According to the 2007 national curriculum amendment, new 'informatics' textbooks have been used since 2010 as a textbook for middle school first graders and will eventually be used in other grades. However, only a few studies that have evaluated the 'informatics' textbooks, have been performed. What is worse is the fact that none of the evaluating tools even exist. Therefore, we propose the criteria of selecting 'informatics' textbooks in middle school. Its contents can be summarized as follows: First, this paper classifies previous studies on textbook evaluation into general criteria of selecting textbooks, method of textbook analysis based on how inquisitively students can learn and previous studies which analyzed existing secondary school 'informatics' textbooks and propose the criteria of selecting 'informatics' textbooks in middle school. Second, using the proposed selection criteria for 'informatics' textbooks and other evaluation criteria, five kinds of informatics textbooks were analyzed. Furthermore, it is expected that we can use the selection criteria as a material to choose the new 'Information science' textbooks, and to suggest alternative directions of future studies in the area of evaluating 'Information science' textbooks.

Improving the secondary school informatics teacher education system by comparing the teacher education programs of Korea and Japan (한일간 교사양성제도의 비교 및 현황 분석을 통한 중등 정보교사 양성제도 개선방안)

  • The quality of teachers is a necessary and sufficient condition for education to accomplish its goals. As informatics education will be taught as a required subject in middle schools starting in 2018, it is more important than anything else to secure high-quality teachers. Accordingly, this study was conducted to compare the informatics teacher education system of Korea with that of Japan in terms of qualifications, licensing and promotion, qualification criteria for teachers, qualifications for informatics teachers and licensing methods. As a result of the comparison three improvements were proposed as follows: The title of the specialized subject must be changed to 'Informatics,' graduate-level education and minor curriculum training courses must be reinforced to enhance the expertise of the teachers, and the qualification system must be changed in such a way as to promote the expertise of the teachers. The improvements proposed in this study will surely contribute to the quality of secondary school informatics teachers.

Antimicrobial Effects of Flavone Analogues and Their Structure-Activity Relationships

  • It has been well known that the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae can cause fungemia in critically ill patients and flavone shows an antimicrobial effect on S. cerevisiae. Therefore, we have investigated the activities of thirteen flavone analogues on S. cerevisiae in our studies. Because flavonoids including flavones have antioxidative effects, we try to carry out the activity studies of flavone analogues in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the relationships between the structures of flavone analogues and their biological activities, such as antimicrobial and antioxidative effects, were elucidated using Comparative Molecular Field Analysis calculations. Of the flavone analogues tested here, 3,2'-dihydroxyflavone showed both good antimicrobial and antioxidative activities.

Glycosylation of Flavonoids with E. coli Expressing Glycosyltransferase from Xanthomonas campestris

  • Glycosyltransferase family 1 (UOT) uses small chemicals including phenolics, antibiotics, and alkaloids as substrates to have an influence in biological activities. A glycosyltransferase (XcGT-2) from Xanthomonas campestris was cloned and consisted of a 1,257 bp open reading frame encoding a 45.5 kDa protein. In order to use this for the modification of phenolic compounds, XcGT-2 was expressed in Escherichia coli as a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein. With the E. coli transformant expressing XcGT-2, biotransformation of flavonoids was carried out. Flavonoids having a double bond between carbons 2 and 3, and hydroxyl groups at both C-3' and C-4', were glycosylated and the glycosylation position was determined to be at the hydroxyl group of C-3', using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These results showed that XcGT-2 regiospecifically transferred a glucose molecule to the 3'-hydroxyl group of flavonoids containing both 3' and 4'-hydroxyl groups.
