Theoretical study of the optical properties of low voltage stacked cholesteric liquid-crystal displays

  • We study theoretically optical properties of thin layered stacked monochrome cholesteric liquid-crystal displays. Thin thickness of the layers (${\sim}1{\mu}m$) allows us appreciably to reduce driving voltage and use such displays in smart cards. Good selective reflection is achieved due to stacked structure. Dependence of the reflectivity of this type of displays on the quantity of the layers, their thickness, and liquid crystal birefringence is investigated.

  • In this paper, we present a tiled display system for tangible meeting. We built our system as a distributed system and use GPU based warping and image blending technique for real-time processing. For efficiency, we update specific area only, where the remote user exist, in real-time and blended it with static panoramic image of remote site.

  • We propose new approaches to thin film transistor fabrication that use carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires as active elements. These nanomaterials which are essentially studied in the context of the post CMOS era will certainly impact the active matrix display industry in the near future.

  • Integrating systems on TFT-LCD panels is more and more popular for the mobile display application. However, it may not be necessary to use LTPS TFT devices. A-Si TFTs are used to integrate systems on TFT-LCD panels, especially scan (gate) drivers. To further reduce the chip size of driver IC, the triplegate pixel structure is developed. Therefore, the number of the source lines is reduced to 1/3 times.

A Fast Response Smectic LCD using Induced Polarization

  • In this paper, a general performance of the PSS-LCD or Polarization Shielded Smectic Liquid Crystal Display is discussed. This smectic base LCD does not use any spontaneous polarization, but uses induced polarization just sa me with current nematic base LCDs. Specific initial molecular alignment as well as specific cell design realizes ext remely fast optical response speed with native wide viewing angle. Moreover, this performance is provided by full compatible electronics for current conventional LCDs. A general performance of the PSS-LCD is introduced herein.

  • Printed thin-film transistors (TFTs) have received profound interests as an alternative to their silicon counterparts for use in fabricating next-Gen microelectronics by virtue of projected low manufacturing cost and certain salient features (e.g., thin and lightweight characteristics, structural flexibility, etc.) that printed TFTs bring to device architecture. The economic advantages stem from engaging low-cost printing techniques (e.g., screen printing, gravure, flexography, etc.) for deposition and patterning in place of traditionally costly high-vacuum, high-temperature photolithographic processes. To render printing TFTs possible, solution processable materials are necessary.

  • We developed the advanced LTPS (A-LTPS) manufacturing process. The a-Si TFT process was combined with selectively enlarging laser crystallization (SELAX) technology to improve the carrier mobility in the region where the peripheral circuits are to be fabricated. A 2.4-inch IPS-pro LCD panel for personal digital assistant use was successfully fabricated using the developed technology.

  • The highly integrated nature of polymer based organic light emitting diode (POLED) microdisplay technology, coupled with low voltage and low power electroluminescent light generation, combine to offer a very promising technology for use in portable and personal electronics products. We briefly describe the technology before discussing how to engineer the color gamut using whiteemitting polymer materials, microcavity device structure and color filter absorbance.

  • One novel electrode-architecture has been adapted to fabricate transparent OTFTs. The device has more than 70% transmittance, yet reminds high performance. Furthermore, we also use transfer line method to prove that the device performance enhancement indeed contributes from the reduction of the contact resistances. It is anticipated that the transparent OTFTs would be very suitable to be the driving circuits for liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
