  • This paper focuses on a number of criteria that enable controlling the influence of geometric simplification on the quality of finite element (FE) computations. To perform the mechanical simulation of a component, the corresponding geometric model typically needs to be simplified in accordance with hypotheses adopted regarding the component's mechanical behaviour. The method presented herein serves to compute an a posteriori indicator for the purpose of estimating the significance of each feature removal. This method can be used as part of an adaptive process of geometric simplification. If a shape detail removed during the shape simplification process proves to be influential on mechanical behaviour, the particular detail can then be reinserted into the simplified model, thus making it possible to readapt the initial simulation model. The fields of application for such a method are: static problems involving linear elastic behaviour, and linear thermal problems with stationary conduction.

  • To investigate the nonlinear aerostatic stability of the Hutong cable-stayed rail-cum-road bridge with ultra-kilometer main span, a FEM bridge model is established. The tri-component wind loads and geometric nonlinearity are taken into consideration and discussed for the influence of nonlinear parameters and factors on bridge resistant capacity of aerostatic instability. The results show that the effect of initial wind attack-angle is significant for the aerostatic stability analysis of the bridge. The geometric nonlinearities of the bridge are of considerable importance in the analysis, especially the effect of cable sag. The instable mechanism of the Hutong Bridge with a steel truss girder is the spatial combination of vertical bending and torsion with large lateral bending displacement. The design wind velocity is much lower than the static instability wind velocity, and the structural aerostatic resistance capacity can meet the requirement.

  • In order to investigate the effect of turbulent intensity on combustion characteristics, new flame factor model was developed. The principal study is the evaluation of interaction of swirl, tumble and unstrutural component of flow characteristics and correlation between turbulent intensity and flame factor. Computational and experimental study has been, performed such as quasi-dimensional cycle simulation, three dimensional flow analysis, engine performance test and diagnostic simulation. From these studies, it was found that flame factor was a function of engine speed and turbulent intensity.

  • The aim of this paper is to illustrate which factors influence the martensite grain fineness made by subsequently surface carburizing of extruded component. The effects of surface decarburizing by annealing, residual stress, initial microstructure and crystal oriental made by forward extrusion were taken into account. The available evidence suggests that the residual stress inside crystal or the crystal orientation is the main factor that results coarse martensite while cold extruded component was treated by carburizing.

  • Sliding mode control (SMC) is an effective method of controlling systems with uncertainties which satisfy the so-called matching condition. However, how to effectively handle mismatched uncertainties of systems is still an ongoing research issue in SMC. Several methods have been proposed to design a stable sliding surface even if mismatched uncertainties exist in a system. Especially, it is presented that robustness and efficiency of SMC for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties can be improved by reducing mismatched uncertainties in the reduced-order system. The reduction method needs a new sliding surface with an additional component based on Lyapunov redesign technique. In this paper, a stable sliding surface which contains additional component to reduce the influence of mismatched uncertainties, is introduced. It is designed by using linear matrix inequalities that guarantees the stability of the system. A numerical example demonstrates the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • Recently, to ensure the high openness and prospect right of the building, curtain wall system is mainly applied to the high-rise buildings at domestic and overseas. As a result, the use of Structural Sealant is increasing. Structural Glazing Sealant is applied with the glass and AL-FRAME (Mullion) that the strong structural strength is required to hold. However, the structural sealant at the construction site in a variety of external influences, such as wind load, thermal load, uv, chemical pollutants etc, in case of storing condition, if structural sealant stored in high temperature for a long period time, it will not perform well compared with initial performance. In this study, the influence of the performance of one-component structural sealant evaluated for proper storage conditions at the construction site and how to use the non-intended.

  • In this paper the failure possibility and the error possibility are used to represent reliability of a technical component and that of a human operator, respectively. The failure possibility and the error possibility are fuzzy sets on the interval [0,1]. In a man-machine system, reliability of the technical component and that of the human operator are usually affected by many factors, e.g., the environment in which a machine is operated, psychological stress of the human operator, etc. The possibility is derived from not only the failure or the error rate but also estimates of these factors. The fuzzy reasoning plays an important role in the derivation. The reliability analysis is performed by the use of the possibility obtained by the present method. Moreover this paper discusses the sensitivity analysis which evaluates what extent the change of the estimation of each factor has an influence on reliability of a man-machine system. The important factors to be ameliorated are shown through the sensitivity analysis.

  • In this paper, a new technique which models the joints characteristics through reduction of DOFs of structures with joints using component mode synthesis (CMS) method is proposed. Bolt joints are modeled by mass-spring systems. Also generalized mass and stiffness matrices for this models are introduced. Because bolt joints have influence on eigenvalues of structures, exact eigenvalues from modal test are used. The results show that the behaviors of structures with bolt joints depend to a large extent on the translational DOFs and not on rotational DOFs of mass and stiffness matrices of bolts. Furthermore it is confirmed that lumped mass-spring systems as models of bolt joints are effective models considering the facts that joint characteristics converged to constant values in some iterations and eignevalues from proposed method are in good agreement with ones from modal test.

  • This paper analyses the response of rigid and semi-rigid steel-concrete composite joints under monotonic loading. The influence of some important parameters, such as the presence of column web stiffening and the mechanical properties of component materials, is investigated by using a three-dimensional finite element modelling based on the Abaqus code. Numerical and experimental responses of different types of composite joints are also compared with the analytical results obtained using the component approach proposed by Eurocode 4. The results obtained with this approach generally fit well with the numerical and experimental values in terms of strength. Conversely, some significant limits arise when evaluating initial stiffness and non-linear behaviour of the composite joint.

  • The purpose of this study is to make clear that the relationship between the directional properties of late arriving sound and listener envelopment (LEV). Psycho-acoustical experiments are performed with an objective measure of inter-aural cross-correlation(IACC) in order In predict whether LEV is perceived equally in two kinds of sound fields with horizontal or vertical component of late arriving sound. It is found that LEV is affected by not horizontal component of late arriving sound but also vertical one.
