  • Free vibration analysis using the method of NDIF (non-dimensional dynamic influence function), which was developed by the author, is extended to arbitrarily shaped polygonal plates with free edges. Local Cartesian coordinate systems are employed to apply the free boundary condition to nodes distributed along the edges of the plate of interest. Furthermore, a new way for applying the free boundary condition to nodes located at corners of the plate is for the first time introduced by considering the phenomenon of stress concentration at the corners. Two case studies show that the proposed method is valid and accurate when the eigenvalues by the proposed method are compared to those by FEM(ANSYS).

  • We examined the steady state solution for a strongly exothermic mixtures in some class A geometries subjected to different boundary conditions under Arrhenius, Bimolecular and Sensitised reactions. The solution of the governing nonlinear reaction diffusion equation was obtained using the variational method formulation executed in Mathematica package. The paper elucidates the influence of geometry, boundary conditions and types of reaction on the thermal ignition of the reactive mixture. Apart from validating known results in literature, the solution gave further insight into the influence of material properties and conditions on the occurrence of thermal ignition.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of the various inlet boundary layer thickness on convective heat transfer distribution in a turbine cascade endwall and blade suction surface. In addition, the proper height of the boundary layer fences for various inlet boundary layer thickness were applied to turbine cascade endwall in order to reduce the secondary flow, and to verify its influence on the heat transfer process within the turbine cascade. Convective heat transfer distributions on the experimental regions were measured by the image processing system. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the blade suction surface were increased with an augmentation of inlet boundary layer thickness. However, in a turbine cascade endwall, magnitude of heat transfer coefficients did not change with variation of inlet boundary layer thickness. The results also present that the boundary layer fence is effective in reducing heat transfer on the suction surface. On the other hand, in the endwall region, boundary layer fence brought about the subsidiary heat transfer increment.

  • A new proposition on the definition of the tropical cyclone (TC) which influences the Korean Peninsula (KP) is presented. The definition is based upon the TC track and intensity, 34 wind swath considering the TC size, and the line of 200 nautical mile (NM) from the KP shore which is the boundary of the official warning of Korea Meteorological Administration. Four types are proposed. First type is TC that hits the KP inland. Second is TC that falls within the 200-NM boundary. Third type is TC that passes outside the 200-NM boundary but large enough to significantly influence the KP. Last, the cases for a TC which are downgraded to the midlatitude cyclone and hit the KP are included. 30-year reanalysis reveals that 21 tropical cyclones should be included in the TC list that influenced the KP during the period from 1977 to 2006, which corresponds to 3.93 TCs per year. Among them, number of type I, II, III and IV TCs turn are to be 36, 47, 10, and 16, respectively. The net increase found in the current reanalysis is 2, 5, 7, and 7 for each type.

  • This study examines the impact of job stress on customer-oriented boundary-spanning behavior with the mediating effects of organizational commitment. The survey data was collected from 147 employees working at a hospital and analyzed statistically by using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. The result of this study are as follows. Hypothesis 1, Job stress has a negative influence on organizational commitment. Hypothesis 2, Organizational commitment has a positive influence on customer-oriented boundary-spanning behavior. Hypothesis 3, Job stress has a negatively significant impact on customer-oriented boundary-spanning behavior. Accordingly, Organizational commitment has the role of partially mediating the effect between job stress and customer-oriented boundary-spanning behavior. This means that employees working at the point of meeting customers must reduce their job stress in order to improve the service quality of a hospital and creating solutions to reduce job stress of hospital employees can increase customer-oriented boundary-spanning behavior.

  • An experimental study was quantitatively carried out in order to investigate the influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer in the near-wake of a flat plate. Tripping wires attached at various positions were selected to change flow conditions of a boundary layer in the vicinity of trailing edge. The flows such as laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.98C from the leading edge are imposed to investigate the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric wake. Measurements were made at freestream velocity of 6.0m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds number is $2.8{\times}10^5$. An x-type hot-wire probe(55P61) was employed to measure at 8 stations in the near-wake region. Test results show that the near-wake of the flat plate for the case of a laminar and transitional boundary layer is sensitive to mean flow shear generated after separation but for the case of turbulent boundary layer is insensitive.

  • The so-called boundary node method (or NDIF method) that was developed by the authors has been extended for free vibration analysis of arbitrarily shaped plates with free edges. Since the proposed method is based on the collocation method, no integration procedure is needed on boundary edges of the plates and only a small amount of numerical calculation is required. A special coordinate transformation has been devised to consider the complicated free boundary conditions at boundary nodes. By the use of the special coordinate transformation, the radius of curvature involved in the free boundary conditions can be successfully dealt with. Finally, verification examples show that natural frequencies obtained by the present method agree well with those given by exact method and other analytical methods.

  • Two compression ramp problems and an impinging shock problem are computed to investigate influence of turbulence models and eddy viscosity on the shock-wave / boundary layer interaction. A Navier-Stokes boundary layer generation code was applied to the generation of inflow boundary conditions. Computational results are validated well with the experimental data and effects of turbulence models are investigated. It is shown that the behavior of turbulence (eddy) viscosity directly affects both the extent of the separation and shock-wave positions over the separation.

  • Many lubricated systems experience boundary lubrication condition during operation. However, the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication are not clearly understood. In this work the factors which affect the friction and wear between boundary lubricated metallic surfaces are investigated. Experiments were performed using a pin-on-disk type tester with pure aluminum, pure copper, and SM45C steel as the disk material and steel, stainless steel and bearing ball as the ball. The experimental conditions were determined according to the Taguchi experimental method. From the experimental results, the major factors that influence the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication could be identified.

  • A boundary layer visualization was carried out in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on an oscillating airfoil. An NACA 0012 airfoil is sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point with oscillation amplitude of ${\pm}6^{\circ}$. A smoke-wire technique was employed to visualize the boundary layer and the near-wake. The freestream velocities are 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03m/s and corresponding chord Reynolds numbers are $2.3{\times}10^4,\;3.3{\times}10^4$, and $4.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. As the reduced frequency of K=0.1 is fixed, the corresponding frequency of an airfoil was adjusted in each case. The results reveal that the point at which the shear stress in an unsteady boundary layer separation disappears does not correspond with the position of the breakdown of the boundary layer, and that the breakdown of the boundary layer occurs further downstream.
