In this paper, to examine the propagation of inclined surface crack due to frictional heating, analytic model is considered as the semi-infinite elastic body subjected to the thermo-mechanical loading of an asperity moving with a high speed. Considering the moving of frictional heat source and convection on a semi-infinite surface having inclined crack, theoretical analysis was carried out to estimate the propagation characteristics of thermo-mechanical crack. Numerical results showed that stress intensity factor $K_\prod/P_0\sqrt{c}$ is increasing with increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, decreasing crack length and the maximum value of it is positioned at the trailing edge. So it is shown that the propagation probability of surface crack is high at the trailing edge of contact area as increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, as decreasing crack length.
In this paper, Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) effect is investigated using a new and integrated approach. Faster solution of time dependant differential equation of motion is achieved using numerical representation of wavelet theory while dynamic Infinite Elements (IFE) concept is utilized to effectively model the unbounded soil domain. Combination of the wavelet theory with IFE concept lead to a robust, efficient and integrated technique for the solution of complex problems. A direct method for soil-structure interaction analysis in a two dimensional medium is also presented in time domain using the frequency dependent transformation matrix. This matrix which represents the far field region is constructed by assembling stiffness matrices of the frequency dependant infinite elements. It maps the problem into the time domain where the equations of motion are to be solved. Accuracy of results obtained in this study is compared to those obtained by other SSI analysis techniques. It is shown that the solution procedure discussed in this paper is reliable, efficient and less time consuming as compared to other existing concepts and procedures.
The purpose of this study was to analyze daylighting performance in a semi-infinite size office space for lighting energy conservation. DOE2.1E was used for simulations for the model space of $12\times12\times2.6m$. Nomographs were developed which could simulate work plane illuminance, glare index, energy consumption rate and energy reduction rate for daylighting design. Major results of simulations are as follows ; 1) When blinds facing south were installed, 43% of workplane illuminance diminished, but the flare index didn't exceed the recommended max-glare value. 2) In a semi-infinite office space facing south. energy consumption rate in the case space of 500 lux workplane illuminance is larger then case space of 300 lux workplane illuminance. Therefore, energy reduction rate is increased when the semi-infinite office faces south and naintains 300 lux workplane illuminance level.

A mechanical lumped parameter model is proposed for the dynamic modeling of a semi-infinite reservoir. A semi-analytic transmitting boundary is derived for a semi-infinite 2-D reservoir of constant depth. The characteristics of the solution are examined in both frequency and time domains. Mass, damping and spring coefficients of the mechanical model are obtained to preserve the major features of the solution such as eigenfrequencies and the shapes of Bessel functions that appear as kernels in the convolution integrals. The lumped parameter model in its final form consists of two masses, a spring and two dampers for each eigenfrequency. Application examples demonstrated that the new lumped parameter model could be used for the time domain analysis of dam-reservoir systems.
The present research intends to study the effects of the seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on the dynamic response of various buildings. Two methods including direct and Cone model were studied through 3D finite element method using ABAQUS software. Cone model as an approximate method to consider the SFSI phenomenon was developed and evaluated for both high and low rise buildings. Effect of soil nonlinearity, foundation rigidity and embedment as well as friction coefficient between soil-foundation interfaces during seismic excitation are investigated. Validity and performance of both approaches are evaluated as reference graphs for Cone model and infinite boundary condition, soil nonlinearity and amplification factor for direct method. A series of calculations by DeepSoil for inverse earthquake record modification was conducted. A comparison of the two methods was carried out by root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) tool for maximum lateral displacement and story shear forces which verifies that Cone model results have good agreement with direct method. It was concluded that Cone method is a convenient, fast and rather accurate method as an approximate way to count for soil media.

Software reliability in the software development process is an important issue. In infinite failure NHPP software reliability models, the fault occurrence rates may have constant, monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing pattern. In this paper, infinite failures NHPP models that the situation was reflected for the fault occurs in the repair time, were presented about comparing property. Commonly, the software model of the infinite failures using the linear hazard rate distribution software reliability based on intercept parameter was used in business economics and actuarial modeling, was presented for comparison problem. The result is that a relatively large intercept parameter was appeared effectively form. The parameters estimation using maximum likelihood estimation was conducted and model selection was performed using the mean square error and the coefficient of determination. The linear hazard rate distribution model is also efficient in terms of reliability because it (the coefficient of determination is 90% or more) in the field of the conventional model can be used as an alternative model could be confirmed. From this paper, the software developers have to consider intercept parameter of life distribution by prior knowledge of the software to identify failure modes which can be able to help.
The bathymetric and gravity data were obtained in 2001 and 2003 during a survey of seamounts in the northwest of the Marshall Islands, western Pacific. The study areas are located in the Pigafetta Basin which is the oldest part of the Pacific plate and in the Ogasawara Fracture Zone which formed from the spreading ridge between the Izanagi and Pacific plates in the Jurassic. The densities of seamounts and the elastic thickness values of the lithosphere are calculated by using three-dimensional flexure modeling considering the constant sediment layer in the infinite plate model. Very low elastic thickness values (5km), relatively young seamounts, and old lithosphere in the east study area suggest the possibility of the rejuvenation of lithosphere by widespread volcanisms, whereas the elastic thickness values (15km), relatively old seamounts, and young lithosphere of the west study area are suitable for a simple cooling plate model of $300-600^{\circ}C$ isotherm. The gravity residuals of OSM6-1 and OSM6-2 suggest the possibility of different load density or elastic thickness. Relatively older OSM6-2 formed on the younger lithosphere with relatively thin elastic thickness, while younger OSM6-1 on the older lithosphere with relatively thick elastic thickness.

A Galerkin's finite element model incorporating infinite elements for modeling of radiation condition at infinity has been developed, which is based on an extended mild-slope equation. To illustrate the validity and applicability of the present model, the example analyses were carried out for a resonance problem in the rectangular harbor of Ippen and Goda (1963) and for wave transformations over circular shoals of Sharp (1968) and Chandrasekera and Cheung (1997). Comparisons with the results obtained by hydraulic experiments and hybrid element method showed that the present model gives very good results in spite of the rapidly varying topography. Numerical experiments were also performed for wave transformations over a circular concave well which may be an alternative to conventional wave barriers.

In order to establish a theoretical basis for the analyses of transient behaviors in stratified thermal storage tanks, analytical approaches to an improved one-dimensional model are made. In the present model the storage tank is treated as a finite region with an adiabatic tank exit, whereas it has been considered as a simple semi-infinite region previously. Application of the Laplace transformation and the Inversion theorem to the governing equations makes it possible to obtain an exact infinite-series solution, which is convergent only at sufficiently large time. Accordingly a complementary solution which is available for short times, i.e., the time range of this study is sought by an approximate method. The approximate solution which is rigorously validated through the examination of neglected terms in the solution procedure agrees quite well with the exact one. Moreover, it is simpler to use and more convenient to interpret the physical meaning of the solution. Comparison of the present solution with the previous ones shows relatively large difference near the tank bottom, which results from the more realistic boundary condition adopted in the present model. Some representative results by the approximate solution including effects of the Peclet number on temperature distrbutions are illustrated to show the utility of this study. In consequence, it is expected that the present results based on the improved model replace the foregoing ones as a new theoretical reference for studies of thermal stratification fields.
