This study aims to survey the fatal industrial accidents attributed to crane, and to present their preventive measures based on the results of the survey. The survey was on the basis of 60 fatal accidents caused by crane from January 1998 to July 2003. The results showed that 1) of varying types of crane, fatal accidents were most frequently caused by mobile no: 2) more crane accidents occurred on weekend of Friday and Saturday by a day of the week; 3) experienced crane operators with long length of work or the age of over 40 were more frequently subjected to fatal accidents compared to novice operators; and 4) crane accidents were more attributable to unsafe acts such as poor working method, non-observance for safe working rules, etc. than hardware aspects of crane itself. It is recommended that for reducing crane accidents, more practical education and training for crane operation be reinforced.
Since cranes are a kind of complex human-machine systems, it is almost impossible to completely secure safety with current technologies. Therefore, managerial interventions to prevent human errors are needed for safely operating a crane. The Occupational Safety and Health law states that cabin-type crane operators should have crane drivers' licence and crane-related operators (e.g., pendent-type crane operators, slinging workers) should take a special safety training. However, statistics on industrial accidents showed that fatalities due to crane accidents (185 accidents occurred during 2013~2017) were the highest among hazardous machinery and equipment. To effectively control the crane-related accidents, voices of crane workers need to be analyzed to investigate the current status. This study surveyed perceived causes of crane accidents and status of special safety training for crane workers of 387. The survey revealed that 24.3% of the respondents experienced crane accidents and 31.4% eye-witnessed crane accidents. 79% of the respondents pointed human errors such as improper crane operation and improper slinging as the first cause. Lastly, only 16.7% of the respondents took a professional special safety training; but the rest took lecture-based or incomplete education. The findings of the present study can be applied to improve crane-related policies and special safety training systems.
Crane is an important equipment for the transport of heavy goods in industrial sites, but it is also known as one of the most fatal machines. In order to reduce crane accidents, it is necessary to minimize human errors during crane operations. To achieve this, ergonomic design principles are recommended to be reflected from the crane design stage. The study analyzed the safety certification standards for crane that should be fulfilled at the crane design and manufacturing stage. This study selected five representative ergonomic design principles (feedback, compatibility, consistency, full-proof, and fail-safe) by surveying heuristic evaluation principles that are widely used for usability evaluation in early design stage. Next, the principles were applied to the safety certification standards to identify insufficient clauses. This study identified 12 insufficient clauses out of 119 in the current safety certification standards for crane and discussed their improvement directions to comply the ergonomic principles. The analysis results of this study can help of improving the safety certification standards and the method used in this study can also be applied to identify insufficient clauses in the safety certification standards for other industrial machines such as press machine and lift.
Background: In this study, the measurement of job stress of electric overhead traveling crane operators and quantification of the effects of operator and workplace characteristics on job stress were assessed. Methods: Job stress was measured on five subscales: employee empowerment, role overload, role ambiguity, rule violation, and job hazard. The characteristics of the operators that were studied were age, experience, body weight, and body height. The workplace characteristics considered were hours of exposure, cabin type, cabin feature, and crane height. The proposed methodology included administration of a questionnaire survey to 76 electric overhead traveling crane operators followed by analysis using analysis of variance and a classification and regression tree. Results: The key findings were: (1) the five subscales can be used to measure job stress; (2) employee empowerment was the most significant factor followed by the role overload; (3) workplace characteristics contributed more towards job stress than operator's characteristics; and (4) of the workplace characteristics, crane height was the major contributor. Conclusion: The issues related to crane height and cabin feature can be fixed by providing engineering or foolproof solutions than relying on interventions related to the demographic factors.
The half of njuries by carrying-unloading machinery was injuries due to crane. The purpose of this study was to analyze present condition of injuries by the crane, to investigate hazard management model, injury prevention technique, and to suggest safety countermeasures of crane working. The hazard management model is composed of 5 rules and 10 methods. The rules are to remove, separate, protect, make up and correspond. Prior to this crane countermeasures, general protection for head, foot and hand are needed. Hazard prevention affects on industrial management economically and psychologically. The preparation of safety countermeasures are very important for the prevention of industrial injuries, The countermeasures are setting-up of safety culture, active and rationale safety education. As the industrial safety and health system should be performed for the employees' health and life, the industrial competitive power and productivity would be improved.

Overhead cranes are the most widely used and have been identified as one of the main causes of fatal accidents. Although structural, mechanical and electrical safety standards for overhead cranes have been established to some extent, ergonomic standards related to crane controllers are rarely established. As a result, many crane accidents are reported to be caused by operator's error. To investigate the actual use of crane controllers in the industrial field, we surveyed 82 overhead cranes in 15 workplace and interviewed workers operating them. This study has presented the ergonomic problems related to the crane controllers in the field. As a result of investigation, it was found that the direction control signs, the sign language, and the button layout on the pendant switches and remote controllers are not standardized, which can cause a human error. To reduce human errors in overhead crane operation, ergonomic standards for controllers should be reflected on the government legislation or standards.
In this paper, a new nonlinear dynamic model is derived for a 2-dimensional overhead crane based on a new definition of 2-degree-of-freedom swing angle, and a new anti-swing control law is proposed for the crane. The dynamic model and control law take simultaneous travel and traverse motions of the crane into consideration. The model is first linearized for small motions of the crane load about the vertical stable equilibrium. Then the model becomes decoupled and symmetric with respect to the travel and traverse axes of the crane. From this result, a decoupled anti-swing control law is proposed based on the linearized model via the loop shaping and root locus methods. This decoupled method guarantees not only fast damping of load-swing but also zero steady state position error with optimal transient response for the 2-dimensional motion of the crane. Finally, the proposed control method is evaluated by controlling the simultaneous travel and traverse motions of a 2-dimensional prototype overhead crane. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is then proven by the experimental results.
Construction sites have gradually become bigger and bigger according to Korea economic growth. Also use of tower crane and other heavy equipment has been increased. The increased use of heavy equipment like tower crane is leading to fatality incident. This study will verify hazards to influence tower crane incident through structural and positive verification and find which hazard influence incident risk. The result of this study is as follows. First, while there is a significant difference between safety managers and tower crane operators for working environment, safety management, personal manage among risk factors, we can not find any evidence on the difference in perception of tower crane incident risk between them. Second, task manage risk and personal manage risk has a significant positive effect on perception of tower crane incident risk. Third, while site environment risk has a significant positive moderating effect of task type between risk factors and perception of tower crane incident risk, personal environment risk has a significant negative moderating effect between them.
The use of gantry crane systems for transporting payload is very common in industrial application. However, moving the payload using the crane is not an easy task especially when strict specifications on the swing angle and on the transfer time need to be satisfied. To overcome this problem, this paper describes development of an intelligent gantry crane system based on the mechatronic design. A lab-scale gantry crane is designed and then its intelligent controllers are developed. Fuzzy logic controllers are adopted, designed and implemented for controlling payload position as well as the swing angle of the gantry crane. The performance of the intelligent gantry crane system is evaluated on a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) environment. Moreover robustness of the proposed system is also evaluated. The result shows that the intelligent gantry crane system designed based on the mechatronic design approach has better performance compared with the automatic gantry crane system controlled by classical PID controllers. Moreover simulation result shows that the intelligent gantry crane system is more robust to parameter variation than the automatic gantry crane system.
