Several factors, including peak dp/dt of the ventricular pressure and maximum closing velocity of leaflet have been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold. In the present study, just before closing velocity of the leaflet has been studied as indices of the cavitation threshold, and cavitation erosion on the surface of a mechanical valve was examined by focusing on squeeze flow and the water hammer phenomenon during the closing period of the valve. A simple solenoid-actuated test device that can directly control the valve closing velocity was developed, and opening-closing tests of 3,000 and 40,000 cycles were performed at various closing velocities. There was a closing velocity threshold to occur erosion pitting of valve surface, and its value was about 0.4 m/s in this study. Cavitation-induced erosion pits were observed only in regions where squeeze flow occurred immediately before valve closure On the other hand, the number of the pits was found to be closely related to an area of water hammer-induced pressure wave below the critical pressure defined by water vapor pressure. Therefore, it was concluded that cavitation is initiated and augmented by the two pressure drops due to squeeze flow and water hammer phenomenon, respectively.
In this paper, we establish an analysis algorithm and a design procedure for a Vane-Wheel which is a freely rotating device behind a propeller, by using a panel method. Vane-Wheel's function is to extract energy from the propeller slipstream in turbine part which is inner part of the Vane-Wheel, and convert this energy into an additional propulsive thrust in propeller part which is outer part of the Vane-Wheel. Two parts must satisfy torque balance and thrust has to act to the ship's forward direction. A Vane-Wheel has large interaction effect with propeller since it is placed behind of the propeller. Therefore, in order to consider interaction effect correctly, incoming velocity to the Vane-Wheel in a circumferential mean wake was calculated considering induced velocity from propeller to the Vane-Wheel. Likewise, incoming velocity to the propeller was calculated considering induced velocity from the Vane-Wheel to the propeller. This process is repeated until a converged result is obtained.
Virtual reality (VR) sickness can have an influential effect on the viewing quality of VR 3D contents. Particularly, watching the 3D contents on a head-mounted display (HMD) could cause some severe level of visual discomfort. Despite the importance of assessing the VR sickness, most of the recent studies have focused on unveiling the reason of inducing VR sickness. In this paper, we subjectively measure the level of VR sickness induced in the viewing of omnidirectional 3D graphics contents in HMD environment. Apart from that, we propose an objective assessment model that estimates the level of induced VR sickness by calculating the difference between head movement velocity and global camera motion velocity.
In this study, the flow characteristics according to the shape of the vortex nozzle was studied by numerical analysis and the amount of microbubble generation was measured experimentally. The shape of the vortex nozzle is cylindrical, diffuser, and conical type. The axial fluid velocity in the induced tube gradually increased from the inlet to the outlet. In particular, the fluid velocity in the nozzle part increased rapidly. The velocity distribution of the fluid at the inlet of the induced tube showed that the flow rotates counterclockwise in the outer region and the inner center of the induced tube. At the outlet of the induced tube, the cylindrical and conical type showed rotational flow, and the diffuser type showed irregular turbulent flow. The dimensionless pressure ratio 𝜂 of the inner region of the induced tube was lower than that of the outer region. Also, 𝜂 near the outlet of the induced tube in cylindrical and conical type showed a similar tendency to the inlet area. At the outer region of inlet of induced tube, intense vorticity was observed on the wall and in lower region. At the inner region of inlet of induced tube, intense vorticity was observed on the inner wall of the induced tube and in the central region of the inlet of the induced tube. At the outlet of induced tube, in the case of the cylindrical and conical type, intense vorticity was observed near the inner wall, the diffuser type showed irregular strong vorticity inside the tube. The total number of bubbles measured was the most in the cylindrical type, and the microbubbles less than 50mm occurred the most in the conical type.
Effects of particle property variation of cone crack shape according to impact velocity in silicon carbide materials were investigated. The damage induced by spherical impact having different material and size was different according to materials. The size of ring cracks induced on the surface of specimen increased with increase of impact velocity within elastic contact conditions. The impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. In case of high impact velocity, the impact of SiC particle produced radial cracks by the elastic-plastic deformation at impact regions. Also percussion cone was formed from the back surface of specimen when particle size become large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. Increasing impact velocity, zenithal angle of cone cracks in SiC material was linearly decreasing not effect of impact particle size. An empirical equation, $\theta=\theta_{st}-\upsilon_p(180-\theta_{st})(\rho_p/\rho_s)^{1/2}/415$, was obtained from the test data as a function of quasi-static zenithal angle of cone crack($\theta_{st}$), the density of impact particle(${\rho}_p$) and specimen(${\rho}_s$). Applying this equation to the another materials, the variation of zenithal angle of cone crack could be predicted from the particle impact velocity.
The effect of periodic passing wake on the film-coolant flow issuing normally from a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The passing wake was generated by rotating thin circular bars. Depending on the rotational direction the test plate could be simulated as a pressure surface or a suction surface of a gas turbine blade. The phase-averaged velocity components were measured using an X-type hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity and injection hole diameter was 23, 500 and the velocity ratio which is the ratio of film coolant velocity to free-stream velocity was 0.5. The velocity-triangle induced by the wake was similar to that induced by the one generated at the blade trailing edge. The vertical velocity component induced by the passing wake, which approaches to the suction surface and moves away from the pressure surface, played a dominant role in the variation of the flow field. The variation in the phase-averaged velocity on the pressure surface was greater than on the suction surface, but the turbulence kinetic energy variation on the suction surface appeared larger than on the pressure surface.
This study focused on the non-synoptic, tornado-like wind-induced effects on flexible horizontal structures that are extremely sensitive to winds. More specifically, the nonuniform, intensive vertical wind-velocity and transient natures of tornado events and their effects on the global behavior of a long-span bridge were investigated. In addition to the static part in the modeling of tornado-like wind-induced loads, the motion-induced effects were modeled using the semi-empirical model with a two-dimensional (2-D) indicial response function. Both nonlinear wind-induced static analysis and linear aeroelastic analysis in the time domain were conducted based on a 3-D finite-element model to investigate the bridge performance under the most unfavorable tornado pattern considering wind-structure interactions. The results from the present study highlighted the important effects due to abovementioned tornado natures (i.e., nonuniform, intensive vertical wind-velocity and transient features) on the long-span bridge, and hence may facilitate more appropriate wind design of flexible horizontal structures in the tornado-prone areas.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of wind power generation by a vehicle-induced at the median strip on highway. In order to find out wind field information, a CFD method was used. According to the simulation results, the x, y, z-component of the wind velocity around a median strip are rapidly changed at near before and behind a moving vehicle. The x-component of the wind velocity appears high within the range of the length of the passing vehicle, and the wind direction appeared in the opposite direction at the behind of a vehicle. However, x and y-components of the wind velocity at the behind of vehicle are shown constantly. We confirmed possibility of wind power generation using a vehicle-induced wind at the median strip.
The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive. Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in the personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity components and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The results show that the front holes reduce now-induced noise and the position of pickup body affects flow near the window. In addition, il is possible for cooling of heat sources in an optical disc drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray.
This paper deals with a vibration control analysis of a rotating composite blade, modeled as a tapered thinwalled beam induced by heat flux. The displayed results reveal that the thermally induced vibration yields a detrimental repercussions upon their dynamic responses. The blade consists of host graphite epoxy laminate with surface and spanwise distributed transversely isotropic (PZT-4) sensors and actuators. The controller is implemented via the negative velocity and displacement feedback control methodology, which prove to overcome the deleterious effect associated with the thermally induced vibration. The structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear, secondary warping, anisotropy of constituent materials, and rotary inertias.
