Acidic air pollutants were collected to characterize indoor air quality in a residential area in the summer. All indoor and outdoor samples were measured simultaneously using an annular denuder system(ADS) in Seoul. The data set was collected from July 26 to September 11, 1997. The mean indoor/outdoor ratios measured from this study were : 0.34 for $HNO_3$; 0.91 for $HNO_2$; 0.22 for $SO_2$; 1.34 for $NH_3$; 0.78 for $PM_{2.5}(d_p$ <2.5 $mutextrm{m}$); 0.90 for $SO_{4}^{2-}$; 0.68 for $NO_{3}^{-}$ and 0.79 for $NH_{4}^{+}$. Indoor concentrations of $HNO_3$, $SO_2$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were highly correlated with the outdoor concentrations. The relationship between indoor and outdoor air is dependent, to a large extent, on the rate of air exchange between these two environments. A tracer-gas decay technique with sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_{6}$) as a tracer gas was used to estimate the air exchange of a private home in the summer. The average air exchange rate was estimated to be 23.7 hr(sup)-1. The deposition velocities for $SO_{4}^{2-}$, $NO_{3}^{-}$ and $NH_{4}^{+}$ calculated were 0.17, 0.69 abd 0.39 cm/sec, respectively.

Acidic air pollutants were collected to characterize indoor air quality at a private house in Seoul during the spring period. All indoor and outdoor samples were measured simultaneously using an annular denuder system. The data set was collected on twelve different days with a 24-hr sampling period in April and May 1997. The chemical species measured were HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$in the gas phase and P $M_{2.5}$ (dp 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), S $O_4$$^{2-}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ in the particulate phase. Indoor concentrations of HN $O_2$, N $H_3$, and P $M_{2.5}$ were greater than outdoor levels. However, indoor concentrations of HN $O_3$, S $O_2$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ were less than those found from outdoors. In the case of S $O_4$$^{2-}$, the indoor and outdoor concentrations were similar. Indoor concentrations of P $M_{2.5}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were dependent upon the outdoor concentrations. A tracer-gas decay technique with sulfur hexafluoride (S $F_{6}$ ) as the tracer gas was used to estimate the air exchange rate of a private home in the spring. The average air exchange rate was computed to be 2.87 h $r^{-1}$ .X> .
The main sources of the new house syndrome(sometimes it called sick building syndrome) are a concentration of formaldehyde (HCHO) and a concentration of total volatile organic compounds(TVOC). I had field measurements of indoor air quality in the apartment unit at medium-size cities(Y city, C city). I measured indoor air temperature, HCHO concentration in 16 units, TVOC concentration in 6 units and air tightness in 7 units. And I measured outdoor air quality, HCHO concentration and TVOC concentration. Mean concentration of HCHO was $357{\mu}g/m^3$(2006 standard=$120{\mu}g/m^3$), mean concentration of TVOC was $3,092{\mu}g/m^3$ and mean effective air leakage area was 193 cm2. There was a close relation between the indoor air temperature and HCHO concentration, between the indoor air temperature and TVOC concentration. Air tightness also had relation.
Eight aromatic hydrocarbons were quantified in a newly constructed building before occupancy during the period of November 1997 to January 1998. Air samples were collected in 6 L stainless steel canisters for 8 hours based on working hour. It was found that the measured total concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons decreases rapidly with time up to a steady-state value. However, the fractions for each aromatic hydrocarbon were greatly changed with time. The concentration ratios of indoor to outdoor for aromatic hydrocarbons are greater than 1 during early period of the measurement, and the ratios decrease with time. The concentrations of toluene, m+p-xylene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene are much higher than those of styrene, 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene, and 1, 3, 5-f trimethylbenzene in indoor air. The concentration fractions of m+p-xylene, ethylbenzed, and o-xylene in indoor air are about twice as hight as those in outdoor air measured during the similar period. It was concluded that the aromatic hydrocarbons were emitted from building materials, paints, and adhesives in an-built building.
The guidelines for indoor air quality of public transportations such as subway, train and bus was presented by Korean Ministry of Environment last end of year 2006 based on the great consequence of indoor air quality in daily life. Two main parameters, carbon dioxide($CO_2$) and particulate matters smaller than $10\;{\mu}m(PM_{10})$, were selected as index pollutants for the management of indoor air quality. The former pollutant, $CO_2$, is regarded as index of ventilation status and the major source of $CO_2$ in the train or subway is the exhalation of passengers. It is publically perceived that the high $CO_2$ concentration in a crowded subway will be reduced and ventilated with outdoor air by door-opening taken every 2 or 3 minutes when the train stops each station. However, there has not been any scientific proof and quantitative information on the effect of door-opening on the $CO_2$ reduction by ventilation with outdoor air. In this study, $CO_2$ concentration and number of passengers were measured at each station on the 3 lines of Korail metropolitan subway. In order to evaluate the effect of $CO_2$ reduction by door opening, the theoretical approach using the $CO_2$ balance equation was performed. By comparing the predicted data with monitoring one, the optimum $CO_2$ dilution factor was determined. For the first time, it was quantified that about 35% of $CO_2$ concentration in the subway indoor was removed by the door-opening at each station.
Indoor air quality can be affected by indoor sources, ventilation, decay, and outdoor levels. Various indoor and out-door combustion sources produce nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$), which is a by-product of high temperature fossil fuel combustion. Especially, the presence of gas ranges and smoking have been identified as major factors contributing to indoor $NO_2$ exposures. In this study, we compared an industrial complex area with a country area by assessing the personal exposure to $NO_2$with measurements of indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ levels in residences and by house characteristics and questionnaire. Personal exposure concentrations were significantly correlated with indoor $NO_2$ concentrations of residences in both the industrial complex area and the country area with correlation coefficients of 0.561 and 0.664, respectively, compared to outdoors. Multiple regression analysis, indicated that indoor $NO_2$ levels in residences were only affected by outdoor levels (p = 0.000) in spite of higher indoor sources such as smoking. Therefore, it is suggested that outdoor air quality as well as indoor air quality should be considered in the reduction of the personal exposure to air pollutants.

A comprehensive profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in public spaces is needed for interpreting indoor air measurements. Seasonal differences in profiles are critical for epidemiological study and risk assessment. The purposes of this study were to establish profiles for individual VOCs in 50 indoor public places in Korea and to determine seasonal variations in their concentrations. Air samples were taken during working hours. Seventy-two of the 91 targeted VOCs were identified using multiple standards. Six VOCs detected in all summer and winter samples were toluene, acetone, m,p-xylenes, ethylbenzene, benzene, and styrene. In summer, methyl ethyl ketone and 1-butanol were also found in all samples. In both seasons, the dominant indoor VOCs were toluene, m,p-xylenes, ethylbenzene, acetone, and isopropyl alcohol. Other chemicals associated with gasoline emissions were dominant in summer. Limonene was dominant only in winter due to the consumption of tangerines. The nine VOCs with the highest concentrations comprised 64.8% and 49.6% of the TVOC in summer and winter, respectively. Comparing two types of adsorbent tube, a single adsorbent tube with Tenax-TA had similar detection performance as a double adsorbent tube with Tenax and Carbotrap.
In regard to indoor air quality patterns, the government introduced various polices that were about managing and monitoring quality of indoor air as a major assignment, and also executed 'Indoor Air Quality Management Act' which was presented in the May, 2004. However, among the multi-usage facilities controlled by the Act, the school was not included yet. This study goal was to investigate PM 10 pollution patterns of the high school classrooms using a pattern recognition method based on cluster analysis and disjoint principal component analysis, and further to survey levels of inorganic elements in May, June, and September, 2004. A hierarchical clustering method was examined to obtain possible objects in pseudo homogeneous sample classes by transformation raw data and by applying various distance. Following the analysis, the disjoint principal component analysis was used to define homogeneous sample class after deleting outliers. Then three homogeneous Patterns were obtained as follows: the first class had been separated and objects in the class were considered to be sampled under semi-open condition. This class had high concentration of Ca, Fe, Mg, K, Al, and Na which are related with a soil and a chalk compounds. The second class was obtained in which objects were sampled while working air-conditioners and was identified low concentration of PM 10 and elements. Objects in the last class were assigned during rainy day. A chalk, soil element and various types of anthropogenic sources including combustions and industrial influenced the third class. This methodology was thought to be helpful enough to classify indoor air quality patterns and indoor environmental categories when controlling an indoor air quality.
As indoor air quality directly affects health and comforts of the residents, researchers from different countries have continued to explore criteria by which indoor air quality can be indicated in a scientific and quantitative manner over the past several decades. However, there are many possibilities that can deteriorate indoor air quality. Due to the uncertainty of influence factors, it is quite difficult to develop a correct evaluation model and quantitative method. Furthermore, the effects from the indoor air pollutants have different levels, leading to the difficulties to apply the regular standard. This study aims to propose evaluation criteria by using the FD-AHP analysis. Obtained findings will be beneficial to construct apartment buildings, commercial buildings and others health performance evaluation framework.
Kindergarten children are engaged in the age of physical immaturity as well as the rapid growth. The indoor air contaminants that are proved to affect even the full grown adults are obvious to have no little influence to immature small children in a growth period. In May 2004, for the multi purpose facilities and newly constructed apartments, the Ministry of Environment announced "Indoor Air Quality Control Law for the Multi Purpose Facility," which made the interests to be focused in the urgent understanding of current condition and preparation of measures about the indoor air pollution. In Dec 2005, the law was revised to obligatorily notify the amount of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compounds in the case of newly constructed apartments with more than 100 houses. However, since the kindergarten takes none of the classifications, even the current condition is not grasped although it is directly connected to the health of growing children. Therefore, the study aims to analyze indoor air pollution of one selected kindergarten in Incheon city.
