  • Thermal neutrality is not enough to achieve thermal comfort. The temperature level can be the optimal, and still people may complain. This situation is often explained by the problem of local discomfort. Local discomfort can be caused by radiant asymmetry, local air velocities, too warm and too cold floor temperature and vertical temperature difference. This temperature difference may generate thermal discomfort due to different thermal sensation in different body parts. Therefore, thermal comfort can not be correctly evaluated without considering these differences. This study investigates thermal discomfort sensations of different body parts and its effect on overall thermal sensation and comfort in air-heating room. Experimental results of evaluating thermal discomfort at different body parts in an air-heating room showed that thermal sensation on the shoulder was significantly related to the overall thermal sensation and discomfort. Although it is known that cool-head, warm-foot condition is good for comfort living, cool temperature around the head generated discomfort.

  • Purpose: This study aimed at improving the indoor environment of the office building by measuring the indoor environment and conducting a survey. Method: The measurement was conducted from January 13 to March 16 in 2012, targeting 44 sites in same office building located in Seoul, South Korea. The lists of measurement such as dry-blub temperature, relative humidity, formaldehyde (HCHO), asbestos, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle pollution (PM10) were measured. In addition, illuminance which belongs to light environment and noise in sound[acoustical] environment were measured respectively. Result: The buildings showed overall pleasant conditions. In terms of the thermal, air, sound, and visual environment, each measurements were satisfied with the requirements in standard, within pleasant ranges, except several sites. However, the survey results were revealed that the office workers were mostly dissatisfied with their indoor environment. Given that the measured values were mostly within standards, the results of survey might have resulted from a compensation mentality biased toward the subjects in psychological terms.

  • There are increasing developments and uses of functional building materials are recently developed and introduced to the test method for the materials. Especially, moisture problem has a major role are also being established in indoor air quality problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the water vapour adsorption/desorption property of a ceiling material. The variation of the temperature and moisture were measured with the application materials by mock up test based on JIS 1470-1. The result shows that water vapour adsorption/desorption property of ceiling material is appeared in changes of moisture adsorption and desorption in comparison with that of a general ceiling material. Therefore, in case of decreasing and increasing in humidity, these materials can be used as an finishing material to sustain comfort condition.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out for aluminum foam heat sink inserted into the annulus to examine the feasibility as a heat sink for high performance forced water cooling in the annulus. The local wall temperature distribution, inlet and outlet pressures and temperatures, and heat transfer coefficients were measured for heat flux of 13.6, 18.9, 25.1, 31.4 $kw/m^2$ and Reynolds number ranged from 120 to 2000. Experimental results show that the friction factor is higher than clear annulus without aluminum foam, while the significant augmentation in Nu is obtained. This technique can be used for the compactness of the heat exchanger.

  • The real time IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) management is very important for large buildings and underground facilities such as subways because poor IAQ is immediately harmful to human health. Such IAQ management requires monitoring, prediction and control in an integrated and real time manner. In this paper, we present three PM10 hourly prediction models for such realtime IAQ management as both Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Both MLR and ANN models show good performances between 0.76 and 0.88 with respect to R (correlation coefficient) between the measured and predicted values, but the MLR models outperform the corresponding ANN models with respect to RMSE (root mean square error).

  • In this study, the effects of heating control methods on heating control performance and energy consumption in the floor radiant heating control system of residential apartments were research by computer simulation. A general regression neural network(GRNN) control method for reducing indoor temperature overshoot and saving energy in floor radiant heating system is suggested. The GRNN control method shows good responses in comparison with the conventional and outdoor reset control methods for improving indoor thermal environment and reducing energy consumption.

  • With increasing concerns of indoor air quality, $CO_2$ concentration in the public transportation, such as train, bus, and subway, draws big interests. The $CO_2$ concentration in the indoor air is regarded as index of ventilation status rather than that of adverse health effect. In this study, we measured the time-series of $CO_2$ concentrations in the KTX cabin during the journey of Gyongbu-line (Seoul-Busan) and Honam-line (Seoul-Mokpo) with the number of passengers on board. At the same time, the concentration of particulate matter (PM), temperature, humidity and gaseous pollutants including HCHO and VOCs were monitored. It is found that the $CO_2$ concentration was correlated linearly with number of passengers and was highly correlated with tunnel regions where the ventilation unit (flap) was closed.

  • It is essential for vertical smart farms that artificially grow crops in an enclosed space to properly utilize air environment facilities to create an appropriate growth environment. However, domestic vertical smart farm companies are creating a growing environment by relying on empirical data rather than systematic methods. Using IoT to create a growing environment based on systematic and precise monitoring can increase crop production yield and maximize profitability. This study aims to construct a monitoring system using IoT and to analyze the cause by demonstrating the imbalance of temperature environment, which is a significant factor in crop cultivation. 1) The horizontal temperature distribution of the multi-layer shelf was measured with different operating methods of LED and air conditioner. As a result, there was a temperature difference of "up to 1.7℃" between the sensors. 2) As a result of measuring the vertical temperature distribution, the temperature difference was "up to 6.3℃". In order to reduce this temperature gap, a strategy for proper arrangement and operation of air conditioning equipment is required.

  • This paper conducted a study on how the heat radiation of light emitting diode(LED) luminaires affects the indoor temperature increase. The effect was compared with that of a 20 W compact fluorescent lamp(CFL) and a 50 W MR16 halogen lamp which are most widely used inside of cruises, a LED downlight and a 4W MR16 LED replacing each of them. We installed a luminarie inside a thermally shielded chamber, measuring the temperature changes under the same volume every 5 minutes and compared the result with theoretically calculated heat radiation. The temperature changes in the chamber was measured four times, on seven hours' period in order to keep sufficient time once the temperature reaches the thermal equilibrium state. The results showed that the temperature of the 20 W E26 CFL and the 10 W LED downlight increased by $21.1^{\circ}C$ and $10.4^{\circ}C$ respectively, while that of the 50 W halogen MR16 and the 4 W LED MR16 increased by $33.9^{\circ}C$ and $4.8^{\circ}C$ respectively. The experimental heat radiation were calculated from the results and the experimental heat radiation of the CFL and the LED downlight were 171.5 cal and 86.5 cal, and those of the halogen MR16 and the LED MR16 were 275.3 cal and 36.5 cal. Therefore, the heat radiation was reduced by 49.5% and 86.7%, respectively, by replacing conventional light source with LED. In conclusion, we can expect a reduction of power consumption in air condition system and the effect on indoor temperature increase by application of LED luminaires.
