  • synergistic action caused by iodide ions on the corrosion inhibition of aluminium (Al) in 0.5 M HCl in the presence of Azadirachta Indica (AZI) plant extract has been investigated using potintiodynamic polarization and impedance techniques. It is found that AZI extract inhibits the corrosion of aluminium in 0.5 M HCl. The inhibition efficiency increases with the increase in AZI extract concentration, until 24% v/v of AZI extract, then Inh.% is decreased with father increase in AZI extract concentration. The adsorption of this extract in the studied concentration is found to obey Frewendlish adsorption isotherm. The addition of iodide ions enhances the inhibition efficiency to a considerable extent. The increase in Inh.% values in presence of fixed concentration of iodide ions indicates that AZI extract forms an insoluble complex at lower AZI extract concentrations by undergoing a joint adsorption. But at higher concentrations of AZI extract, competitive adsorption is found between iodide ions and the formed complex leading to less Inh.%.The Inh.% decreased in presence of iodide ions with AZI extract than in presence of AZI extract alone at all studied iodide concentrations. The synergism parameter Sq is defined and calculated from surface coverage values. This parameter in the case of AZI extract is found to be more than unity, indicating that the enhanced inhibition efficiency caused by the addition of iodide ions.

  • In a previous study, the total phenolic content in ethanol extracts of medicinal plants that naturally grow on Jeju Island were analyzed with the extracts of Raphiolepsis indica leaf found to have the highest. The current study was carried out to evaluate the total flavonoid content, radical-scavenging activity, and the protective effect of R. indica extracts and solvent fractions on oxidative stress in HaCaT keratinocytes. More specifically, total flavonoid content and 2-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical-scavenging activity were measured to assess anti-oxidative activity, and protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were determined by 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay on the HaCaT cells. Of the various fractions analyzed, the ethyl acetate extract of R. indica showed the highest total flavonoid content (149.13 mg/g extracts) and the lowest remaining ABTS. In addition, the ethyl acetate fraction was significantly more resistant against H2O2 than the negative control. Our results therefore suggest that an ethyl acetate fraction of R. indica protects HaCaT cells against oxidative stress and could prove useful for developing functional cosmetic materials.

  • Paeksulgis (Korean rice cake), containing $0\~0.5\%$ Opuntia Ficus indica var. Saboten powder, was prepared to enable the quality of the mechanical and sensory characteristics to be tested. The pHs of the Paeksulgis without and with 0.05 to $0.5\%$ Opuntia Ficus indica var. Saboten powder were 5.99 and about 5.7 respectively. With regard to the Hunter's color values of the control Paekulgis, the lightness (L), redness (a) and yellowness (b) were 94.78, -0.01 and 5.58, respectively. The lightness (L) decreased with increasing Opuntia Ficus indica var. Saboten powder concentration, whereas the redness (a) and yellowness (b) were both increased. with regard to the mechanical characteristics of Paeksulgis, the strength hardness, adhesiveness and gumminess were highest in the control group. In the sensory evaluation of Paeksulgis, the control group had the highest score for texture (p<0.05), but the addition of Opuntia Ficus indica var. Saboten powder gave higher scores for color, flavor, moisture, consistency, after taste and overall preference than the control (p<0.05).

  • We investigated the antibacterial effects of Opuntia ficus indica extracts on foodborne pathogens, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes, on the medium of sliced apples. Pathogens were inoculated on sliced apples and immersed for 10 min in Opuntia ficus indica extracts. Each sample was packaged and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$ for 8 days. The populations of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes significantly decreased with increasing extract concentration (p<0.05). In particular, L. monocytogenes was reduced to non-detectable levels after 2 days in 50 mg/mL treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$ Opuntia ficus indica extracts therefore have antibacterial effects on the two foodborne pathogens. Sensory evaluation results indicated that treated apples had better sensory characteristics than did the control. Therefore, the results suggest that Opuntia ficus indica extracts could be useful as a natural food preservative to improve microbial safety.

  • This study has shown the screening of anti-bacterial activity of three Indian medicinal plant choloroform : methanol (50:50) solvent leaf extracts (i.e. Azadirachta indica, Ocimum sanctum, and Curcuma longa) with different concentrations (10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.625, 0.312, and 0.156 mg/ml) under in vitro conditions against fish pathogenic bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, Streptococcus iniae, Vibrio harveyi, V. anguillarum, and Edwardsiella tarda isolated from olive flounder farms, Jeju Island, South Korea. The anti-microbial activity of the A. indica and O. sanctum extracts yielded the zones of growth inhibition (ZI) was 3 and 1mm against A. hydrophila at concentration of 0.156 mg/ml when compared to that of tetracycline standard (3 mm). At highest concentration (10 mg/ml) of A. indica, O. sanctum, and C. longa, high inhibition was 9, 7, and 6 mm when compared to that of tetracycline (11 mm) against A. hydrophila. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of A. indica, O. sanctum, and C. longa at 0.156 mg/ml that yield 9, 10, and 13 CFU/ml for A. hydrophila, 16, 22, and 25 CFU/ml for S. iniae and 18, 22, and 23 CFU/ml for E. tarda compared to the tetracycline. At highest concentration (10 mg/ml) of the three extracts was better inhibiting the growth of A. hydrophila, S. iniae and E. tarda. A. indica, O. sanctum, and C. longa were determined to the potential antioxidant activityon the basis of their scavenging activity of the stable 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. A. indica extract was 0.625 mg/ml which indicated that the strong anti-oxidant activity. However, O. sanctum and C. longa extracts showed weak anti-oxidant activity at this concentration. Hence, in vitro assay among the pathogens, A. hydropila is better inhibitory activity of the extracts. It is evident that the Indian medicinal plants extracts were subjected to its effectiveness against A. hydrophila, S. iniae, and E.tarda at low concentrations. The obtained results in the present study suggested that the Indian plant extracts is a prevention tools for Korean olive flounder aquaculture pathogens and its need further advance investigation.

  • In this study, we investigated anti-oxidative effects of Duchesnea indica extracts by using Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). The extracts were prepared with 0 %, 30 %, 50 %, 70 % and 100 % aqueous ethanol respectively. The 30 % EtOH D. indica extract showed higher ORAC activity than the other extracts. Therefore, we performed in vitro studies on cytotoxicity of NIH-3T3 cells and MMP-8 collagenase inhibition using by the 30 % EtOH extract. The 30 % EtOH extract showed no cytotoxicity and significant inhibition on MMP-8 collagenase. And we performed clinical studies for the anti-wrinkle effect of the Di-Wrinkle Free Cream. The cream formula was prepared with 2 % arbutin and 1 % D. indica extract. Twenty one healthy women volunteers, ages of 35 and 50, applied the cream on their faces twice a day for 8 weeks. The skin was evaluated with PRIMOS (phaseshift rapid in vivo measuring of human skin) system and analyzed by the student's paired t-test. The wrinkles on the eye region were reduced by 13 % based on the PRIMOS system after 8 weeks. In the safety study of the Di-Wrinkle Free Cream, no symptoms were observed such as erythema, edema, scaling, itching, stinging, burning, tightness and prickling by visual observation and medical examination of volunteers for 8 weeks. Moreover, there was no noticeable skin disorder during experience period. These results suggested that D. indica extracts could be applied as cosmeceuticals effective for anti-wrinkle.

  • This study was conducted to investigate chemical properties of wild $Lactuca$ $indica$ (WL) and cultivated $Lactuca$ $indica$ (CL). The proximate composition, reducing sugar, free amino acids, organic acid, vitamin C, minerals, chlorophyll, and crude saponin were analyzed. WL and CL contained high levels of carbohydrate. The leaves and roots of CL contained higher levels of free amino acid than those of WL. Especially, the proline content of CL leaf was 12 times higher than that of WL leaf, and the arginine content of CL root was 100 times higher than that of WL root. The major organic acid and mineral of $Lactuca$ $indica$ were tartaric acid and potassium, respectively. CL showed significantly higher value of reducing sugar than WL. The vitamin C content of the samples ranged from 0.4 to 24.1 mg%, and CL leaf was the highest amount of vitamin C among the samples. CL leaf had a higher amount of chlorophyll than WL leaf, but WL root contained a higher amount of crude saponin than CL root. As in this study, CL showed better nutritional properties than WL, and these results will provide fundamental data in order to activate the cultivation of wild plants.

  • To evaluate growing degree days(GDD) as an index of growth duration of rice plants, 30 days old seedlings of 16 japonica and 14 indica/japonica varieties were transplanted six times from May 10 at the 10-day intervals at Gyeongsan in 1982. The number of days from transplanting to heading decreased as transplanting dates delayed in all japonica varietie and 4 indica/japonica varieties but that of 10 indica/japonica varieties decreased up to June 9 or June 19 transplantings and then it levelled off or increased with further delay of transplanting. However, GDD requirement was similar among transplanting dates at appropriate base temperatures; GDD could be better than calendar day system to classify maturity of varieties especially grown in a wide range of climatic conditions. Required GDD from transplanting to heading of all indica/japonica and early japonica varieties showened a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) compared to longer season japonica varieties. Among GDD methods, an accumulation of daily Max + Min temp./2 -$l0^{\circ}C$ showed the smallest CV for the duration from transplanting to heading, but for ripening period GDD calculated with adjusted maximum temperature when it was higher than $30^{\circ}C$ showed the best results. Heading date did not affect required GDD for maturity of japonica varieties, but in indica/japonica varieties GDD decreased as heading date delayed; at late transplantings ripening period of indica/japonica varieties was less extended compared to japonica varietes due to a decrease in grain weight.

  • This study was conducted to make the rice yield prediction model system as affected by densities of Aneilema keisak and Aeschynomene indica and to determine their economic threshold levels in flooded direct-seeded rice. When the density of A. keisak was 8 plants per $m^2$, the yield of rice reduced to 8% and as the density increased up to 96 plants per $m^2$, the reduced rate of rice yield reached to 45% and in A. indica, the reduced rate of rice yield were 20 and 77%, respectively. The rice yield loss models of A. keisak and A. indica were predicted as Y=553.2 kg (1+0.00913X), $R^2=0.912^{**}$ and Y=567.9 kg/(1+0.04434X), $R^2=0.961^{**}$, respectively. Economic threshold levels calculated using cousens' equation were 3.0 plants per $m^2$ in A. keisak and 0.6 plants per $m^2$ in A. indica.

  • To develop sustainable new natural anti-aging ingredients from Korean native plants, we investigated the cultivation potential of Nymphoides indica using the eco-friendly aquaponics system, and tested the anti-aging effects from N. indica extracts. N. indica could be grown in aquaponics system using floating leaved deep water culture method, and propagated through rhizome propagation. It was confirmed that the nitrate ($80{\mu}g/mL$), potassium ($63.5{\mu}g/mL$) and water temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) greatly affected the cultivation of the N. indica. In addition, synergistic effects were found when two major components (3,7-di-O-methylquercetin-4'-O-${\beta}$-glucoside & sweroside) were present at more than about $5{\mu}g/mL$. The extract had a significant effect on the recovery of skin cells damaged by environmental pollutant such as $benzo[{\alpha}]pyrene$, ammonium nitrate, formaldehyde. It also suppressed $PGE_2$, $TNF-{\alpha}$ and COX-2, and inhibited the production of MMP-1. Taken together, the results suggested that the standardized extracts of N. indica cultivated in the aquaponics has considerable potential as a new cosmetics ingredient with an anti-aging effect.
