Older or damaged structures can require significant retrofit to ensure they perform well in subsequent earthquakes. Supplemental damping devices are used to achieve this goal, but increase base shear forces, foundation demand, and cost. Displacement reduction without increasing base shear is possible using novel semi-active and recently-created passive devices, which offer energy dissipation in selected quadrants of the force-displacement response. Combining these devices with large, strictly passive energy dissipation devices can offer greater, yet customized response reductions. Supplemental damping to reduce response without increasing base shear enables a net-zero base shear approach. This study evaluates this concept using two incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) to show displacement reductions up to 40% without increasing base shear, more than would be achieved for either device alone, significantly reducing the risk of response exceeding the unaltered structural case. IDA results lead to direct calculation of reductions in risk and annualized economic cost for adding these devices using this net-zero concept, thus quantifying the trade-off. The overall device assessment and risk analysis method presented provides a generalizable proof-of-concept approach, and provides a framework for assessing the impact and economic cost-benefit of using modern supplemental energy dissipation devices.

The abutment of bridge on soft foundation makes lateral movement due to the settlement of back fill and lateral flow. To measure the displacement of such a abutment, there are a lot of indirect method for measurement such as survey of leveling or inclinometer gauge around the abutment. But all of them are not sufficient to confirm the ground behavior and measure the exact lateral behavior of structure. As making the structure and pile cooperatively by measuring the movement of lateral displacement, for measuring the abutment displacement precisely by using the incliinometer. In this work, we try to suggest efficient measuring method of abutment displacement and its application.

In this study, a method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was investigated. The Ramberg-Osgood constants were calculated for SA312, TP316, and SA-508 Gr.1a in an operating temperature of $316^{\circ}C$. Incremental plasticity, using stress-strain data obtained from experiment, and deformation plasticity, using the Ramberg-Osgood constants, were considered in a finite element analysis. Using incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, J-integrals and crack opening displacement values were calculated and compared. By comparing the results of incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, a suitable method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was confirmed.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of improper positioning single-peak and multi-peak lights on color change, microhardness of bottom and top, and surface topography of bulk fill and incremental composites after artificial aging for 1 year. Materials and Methods: Bulk fill and incremental composites were cured using multi-peak and single-peak light-emitting diode (LED) following 4 clinical conditions: (1) optimal condition (no angulation or tip displacement), (2) tip-displacement (2 mm), (3) slight tip angulation (α = 20°) and (4) moderate tip angulation (α = 35°). After 1-year of water aging, the specimens were analyzed for color changes (ΔE), Vickers hardness, surface topography (Ra, Rt, and Rv), and scanning electron microscopy. Results: For samples cured by single-peak LED, the improper positioning significantly increases the color change compared to the optimal position regardless of the type of composite (p < 0.001). For multi-peak LED, the type of resin composite and the curing condition displayed a significant effect on ΔE (p < 0.001). For both LEDs, the Vickers hardness and bottom/top ratio of Vickers hardness were affected by the type of composite and the curing condition (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The bulk fill composite presented greater resistance to wear, higher color stability, and better microhardness than the incremental composite when subjected to improper curing. The multi-peak LED improves curing under improper conditions compared to single-peak LED. Prevention of errors when curing composites requires the attention of all personnel involved in the patient's care once the clinical relevance of the appropriate polymerization reflects on reliable long-term outcomes.

This paper addresses a modified arc-length method for the nonlinear finite element analysis of a structure which is loaded in incremental and fixed forces, simultaneously. The main idea of the method is to separate the displacement term by the constant force from that by the incremental force. As the illustrative examples of the applicability of the present algorithm, a parametric study is performed on the nonlinear buckling behavior of composite cylindrical panels under the combined load of the incremented compression and the constant lateral pressure.

An optical rotary encoder is easy to implement for automation system applications. In particular, the output of the encoder has a digital form pulse, which is also easy to be connected to a popular digital controller. By using an incremental encoder and a counting device, it is easy to measure angular displacement, as the number of the output pulses is proportional to the rotational displacement. This method can only detect the angular placement once a pulse signal comes out of the encoder. The angular displacement detection period is strongly subject to the change of the angular displacement in case of ultimate low velocity range. They have ultimate long detection period or cannot even detect angular displacement at near zero velocity. This paper proposes an algorithm for detecting angular displacement by using a dual encoder system with two encoders of normal resolution. The angular displacement detecting algorithm is able to keep detection period moderately at near zero velocity and even detect constant angular displacement within nominal period. It is useful for motion control applications in case of changing rotational direction at which there occurs zero velocity. In this paper, various experimental results are shown for the angular displacement detection algorithm.
By applying the finite element theory which is capable of handling the geometrically altered structure in a successive manner, the linear relationship between incremental displacements and the magnitude of the initial stress field was derived. Based on this relationship, back analysis code having the capability of dealing multi-step excavation problem was built and verified With this back analysis code, the measurements of the incremental displacements in a particular excavation step make it possible to back-calculate the initial stress state. illustrative examples showed the applicability of this code to a practical problem.
It is important to forecast the final deformation of a tunnel during construction for evaluating its mechanical stability. In this study, the final deformation of a tunnel is forecasted by fitting tunnel deformations measured while excavating to a displacement function and exterpolating it. The tunnel for the study was built in two stages divided into an upper and a lower part. During the lower part construction of the tunnel, the displacement function forecasts the final incremental displacement well compared to the increment measured after completion of the tunnel. It is because the critical initial displacement occurred on passing the measurement pins can be adequately measured during excavating the lower part, which can not be measured during the upper part excavation of the tunnel.

This paper presents the numerical procedure for calculating non-uniform residual stresses based on relieved displacements obtained from incremental hole drilling. The relationship between the in-plane displacement produced by introducing a blind hole and the corresponding residual stress is established. Finite element calculations are described to evaluate the relieved coefficients required for the determination of non-uniform residual stresses. Validity of the proposed method has been tested through three axisymmetric test examples and two three-dimensional examples. As a result of . simulation on the test examples, it is found that this numerical procedure is well adopted to measuring non-uniform residual stress in the full hole depth range of the hole diameter from the surface. The accuracy of the hole drilling method with displacement measurement is discussed, comparing tile method with strain measurement
The effects of past earthquakes have demonstrated the seismic vulnerability of confined masonry structures (CMSs) to earthquakes. The results of experimental analysis indicate that damage to these structures depends on lateral displacement applied to the walls. Seismic evaluation lacks an analytical approach because of the complexity of the behavior of this type of structure; an empirical approach is often used for this purpose. Seismic assessment and risk analysis of CMSs, especially in area have a large number of such buildings is difficult and could be riddled with error. The present study used analytical and numerical models to develop a simplified nonlinear displacement-based approach for seismic assessment of a CMS. The methodology is based on the concept of ESDOF and displacement demand and is compared with displacement capacity at the characteristic period of vibration according to performance level. Displacement demand was identified using the nonlinear displacement spectrum for a specified limit state. This approach is based on a macro model and nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis of a 3D prototype structure taking into account uncertainty of the mechanical properties and results in a simple, precise method for seismic assessment of a CMS. To validate the approach, a case study was considered in the form of an analytical fragility curve which was then compared with the precise method.
