Welding characteristics of STS304 stainless steel and Inconel 600 using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser are experimentally investigated. Alloy 600 being used in steam generator tubing of pressurized water reactor(PWR) exposed to some corrosion environment, stress corrosion cracking can occur on this material. Presented here are the results from a series of experiments in which dissimilar metal welds were made using the gas tungsten arc welding process with pure argon shielding gas. But It is well known that solidification cracking susceptibility of austenitic alloys depends on the solidification temperature range and amount/distribution of solute rich liquid that exists at the terminal stages of solidification. An experimental study was conducted to determine effects of welding parameters and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds.

Fretting wear test in room temperature water was performed to evaluate the wear coefficient of Inconel 600,690 (Pressurized Water Reactor, PWR) and Alloy 800 (CANadian DeuteriumUranium, CANDU) steam generator (SG) tubes against ferritic and martensitic stainless steels. The main focus is to compare the wear behaviors between Alloy 800 and Inconel alloys. Test conditions are $10{\sim}30N$ of normal load, $200{\sim}450{\mu}m$ of sliding amplitude and 30Hz of frequency. The result indicated that the wear rate of Alloy 800 was higher than those of Inconel 690 at various test condition such as normal loads, sliding amplitudes etc. From the results of SEM observation, there was little evidence of plastic deformation layer that were dominantly formed on the worn surfaces of Inconel 690. Also, wear particles in Alloy 800 were released from contacting asperities deformed by severe plastic flow during fretting wear. Main cause of wear rate between Alloy 800 and Inconel 690 may be due to the difference of hardness between martensitic and ferritic stainless steel. The wear rate and wear mechanism of two tubes in room temperature water are discussed.
Time-resolved laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (TRELIBS) has been developed and applied to the qualitative analysis of the component materials of nuclear power plant. The alloy samples used in this work were carbon steels (A106 Gr. B; A336 P11; A335 P22), stainless steels (type 304; type 316) and inconel alloys (Inconel 600; Inconel 690; Inconel 800). Carbon steels can be individually distinguished by the intensity ratio of chromium to iron and molybdenum to iron emission lines observed at the wavelength raging from 485 to 575 nm. Type 316 stainless steel can be easily differentiated from type 304 by identification of the molybdenum emission lines at an emission wavelength ranging from 485 to 575 nm: type 304 does not give any molybdenum emission lines, but type 316 does. The inconel alloys can be individually distinguished by the intensity ratio of Cr/Fe and Ni/Fe emission lines at the wavelength raging from 420 to 510 nm. TRELIBS has been proved to be a powerful analytical technique for direct analysis of alloys due to its non-destructivity and simplicity.

Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X are the most promising candidate materials for the heat exchanger of next generation nuclear reactor. Surface coating and its effects on high temperature properties for the Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X under molten FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF) salt environment have been investigated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods of an arc discharge and a sputtering were applied, respectively. A study for the thermal stability of the surface modified Ni-Cr alloy substrates has been conducted. To evaluate the corrosion mechanism of Ni-Cr alloys in the molten salt, a ruptured Inconel pipe used for the molten salt transportation has been analyzed. The thermal properties of morphological and structural properties each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ in molten FLiNaK salt. The results showed that the TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coated specimens had the enhanced high temperature stability.

The Ni-based superalloy, Inconel 713, was oxidized at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 50 and 100 hours in air. It displayed excellent oxidation resistance, forming a few micrometer-thick scales. The major scale was ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. Other scales formed were $TiO_2$, $NiAl_2O_4$ and $Cr_2O_3$. Generally, uniform oxidation occurred over the alloy surface, resulting in the formation of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ with and without $Cr_2O_3$. Other oxides such as $TiO_2$ and $NiAl_2O_4$ sometimes also formed. Locally, nodular oxidation occurred at the nodules that consisted of diverse alloying elements. The scales were adherent at $800^{\circ}C$. However, they spalled a little at $900{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$.
The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. So, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. In this study, corrosion behavior of Inconel 713LC, Inconel MA 754, Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 in the molten salt $LiCl-Li_2O$ under an oxidizing atmosphere was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 72~216 hrs. Inconel 713LC alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys. Corrosion products of Inconel 713LC were $Cr_2O_3$, $NiCr_2O_4$ and NiO, and those of Inconel MA 754 were $Cr_2O_3$ and $Li_2Ni_8O_{10}$ while $Cr_2O_3$, $LiFeO_2$, $(Cr,Ti)_2O_3$ and $Li_2Ni_8O_{10}$ were produced from Nimonic 80A. Also, corrosion products of Nimonic 90 were found to be $Cr_2O_3$, $(Cr,Ti)_2O_3$, $LiAlO_2$ and $CoCr_2O_4$. Inconel 713LC showed local corrosion behavior and Inconel MA 754, Nimonic 80A, Nimonic 90 showed uniform corrosion behavior.
This study has evaluated the weld metal solidification cracking behavior of several Ni base superalloys (Incoloy 825, Inconel 718 and Inconel 600). Austenitic stainless steels(304, 310S) were also included for comparison. In addition, a possible mechanism of solidification cracking in the fusion zone was suggested based on the extensive microstructural examinations with SEM, EDAX, TEM, SADP and AEM. The solidification cracking resistance of Ni base superalloys was found to be far inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels. The solidification cracking of Incoloy 825 and Inconel 718 was believel to be closely related with the Laves-austenite (Ti rich in 825 and Nb rich in 718) and MC-austenite eutectic phases formed along the grain boundaries during solidification. Cracking in Inconel 600 was always found along the grain boundaries which were enriched with Ti and P. Further, solidifidcation cracking resistance was dependent not only upon the type of love melting phases but also on the amount of the phases along the solidification grain boundaries.

Hard and brittle materials, such as Ni- and Ti-based alloys, glass, and ceramics, are very useful in aerospace, marine, electronics, and high-temperature applications because of their extremely versatile mechanical and chemical properties. One Ni-based alloy, Inconel 718, is a precipitation-hardenable material designed with exceptionally high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, and corrosion resistance with outstanding weldability and excellent creep-rupture properties at moderately high temperatures. However, conventional machining of this alloy presents a challenge to industry. Ultrasonic vibration cutting (UVC) has recently been used to cut this difficult-to-machine material and obtain a high quality surface finish. This paper describes an experimental study of the UVC parameters for Inconel 718, including the cutting force components, tool wear, chip formation, and surface roughness over a range of cutting conditions. A comparison was also made between conventional turning (CT) and UVC using scanning electron microscopy observations of tool wear. The tool wear measured during UVC at low cutting speeds was lower than CT. UVC resulted in better surface finishes compared to CT under the same cutting conditions. Therefore, UVC performed better than CT at low cutting speeds for all measures compared.

Low temperature ${\delta}$-precipitation phenomenon below 2-step aging ($718^{\circ}C$, $8hr+621^{\circ}C$, 8 hr) temperature of cold drawn Inconel 718 alloy wire was investigated. The investigation was carried out on wires with a cold drawn ratio of 0, 20, 50 and 70% using OM, SEM, XRD, TEM, and DSC. In microstructures of 50 and 70% drawn wire, many precipitates were found along the grain boundaries and the twin boundaries in deformation band. From the results of the XRD and TEM analysis, the precipitates were identified as plate-like ${\delta}$-phase. From the results of the DSC analysis, it was also found that a temperature of ${\delta}$-precipitation decreases with an increase of the cold drawn ratio. We concluded that cold drawing of inconel 718 wire promotes the ${\delta}$-precipitation, and under the condition of a high drawing ratio, the ${\delta}$-phase could be precipitated at a temperature below the aging temperature ($718^{\circ}C$).

The Ni-based superalloy, Inconel 740, was corroded between 800 and 1100℃ for up to 100 hr in air and Ar-0.2%SO2 gas in order to study its corrosion behavior in air and sulfur/oxygen environment. It displayed relatively good corrosion resistance in both environment, because its corrosion was primarily dominated by not sulfidation but oxidation especially in Ar-0.2%SO2 gas. Such was attributed to the thermodynamic stability of oxides of alloying elements when compared to corresponding sulfides. The scales consisted primarily of Cr2O3, together with some NiAl2O4, MnCr2O4, NiCrMnO4, and rutile-TiO2. Sulfur from SO2 gas made scales prone to spallation, and thicker. It also widened the internal corrosion zone when compared to air. The corrosion resistance of IN740 was mainly indebted to the formation of protective Cr2O3-rich oxides, and suppression of the sulfide formation.
