  • The purpose of this paper is to develop automatic incident detection algorithm using image based detector in freeway management system. This algorithm was developed by using neutral network for high speed roadway and by using speed and occupancy variable for low speed roadway. The image detector system with the developed automatic incident detection algorithm can detect multi-lane as well as several detect areas for each lane. To evaluate this system, field tests to measure the detecting rate of incidents were performed with other systems which have APID and DES algorithm at high speed roadway(freeway) and low speed roadway(national arterial). As the results of field test, it found that the detect rate of this system was highest rate comparing to other two systems.

  • An acoustic signal-based, tunnel-incident detection system was developed and evaluated. The system was comprised of three components: algorithm, acoustic signal collector, and server system. The algorithm, which was based on nonnegative tensor factorization and a hidden Markov model, processes the acoustic signals to attenuate noise and detect incident-related signals. The acoustic signal collector gathers the tunnel sounds, digitalizes them, and transmits the digitalized acoustic signals to the center server. The server system issues an alert once the algorithm identifies an incident. The performance of the system was evaluated thoroughly in two steps: first, in a controlled tunnel environment using the recorded incident sounds, and second, in an uncontrolled tunnel environment using real-world incident sounds. As a result, the detection rates ranged from 80 to 95% at distances from 50 to 10 m in the controlled environment, and 94 % in the uncontrolled environment. The superiority of the developed system to the existing video image and loop detector-based systems lies in its instantaneous detection capability with less than 2 s.

  • Many traffic centers are highly hesitant in employing existing Automatic Incident Detection Algorithms due to high false alarm rate, low detection rate, and enormous effort taken in maintaining algorithm parameters, together with complex algorithm structure and filtering/smoothing process. Concerns grow over the situation particularly in Freeway Incident Management Area This study proposes a new algorithm and introduces a novel concept, the Displaced Flow Index (DiFI) which is similar to a product of relative speed and relative occupancy for every execution period. The algorithm structure is very simple, also easy to understand with minimum parameters, and could use raw data without any additional pre-processing. To evaluate the performance of the DiFI algorithm, validation test on the algorithm has been conducted using detector data taken from Naebu Expressway in Seoul and following transferability tests with Gyeongbu Expressway detector data. Performance test has utilized many indices such as DR, FAR, MTTD (Mean Time To Detect), CR (Classification Rate), CI (Composite Index) and PI (Performance Index). It was found that the DR is up to 100%, the MTTD is a little over 1.0 minutes, and the FAR is as low as 2.99%. This newly designed algorithm seems promising and outperformed SAO and most popular AIDAs such as APID and DELOS, and showed the best performance in every category.

  • The data quality and measurements along consecutive detector stations can vary much even in the same traffic conditions due to variety in detector types, calibration and maintenance effort, field operation periods, minor geometric changes of roads and so on. These faulty situations often create 10% or more of inherent difference in important traffic measurements between two stations even under stable low flow condition. Low detection rates(DR) and high false alarm rates(FAR) therefore sets in among many popular Automatic Incident Detection Algorithms(AIDA). This research is two-folded and aims mainly to develop a new AIDA for uninterrupted flow. For this purpose, a technique which utilizes a Simple Arithmetic Operation(SAO) of traffic variables is introduced. This SAO technique is designed to address the inherent discrepancy of detector data observed successive stations, and to overcome the degradation of AIDA performance. It was found that this new algorithm improves DR as much as 95 percent and above. And mean time to detection(MTTD) is found to be 1 minutes or less. When it comes to FAR, this new approach compared to existing AIDAs reduces FAR up to 31.0 percent. And capability in persistency check of on-going incidents was found excellent as well.

  • A new approach on the correction for Compton escape component in X-ray unfolding algorithm was investigated to obtain more accurate X-ray source spectrum. The X-ray detector used in this study was a planar type HPGe detector(EG&G ORTEC, GLP-32340/13-P-LP) whose energy response has been blown and ISO narrow beam series were employed as source spectrum. At lower energy Part of measured X-ray spectrum including the correction for Compton escape component more accurate unfolded spectrum was obtained by letting down the starting energy level of the collection in existing spectrum correction procedure to consider multiple scattering effects. It is, from this study, concluded that accurate correction for Compton escape component is needed in X-ray unfolding procedure since Compton scattering becomes more important as incident X-ray energies increase.

  • Background: A variety of inorganic scintillators have been developed and improved for use in radiation detection and measurement, and in situ gamma-ray spectrometry in the environment remains an important area in nuclear safety. In order to verify the feasibility of promising scintillators in an actual environment, a performance test is necessary to identify gamma-ray peaks and calculate the radioactivity from their net count rates in peaks. Materials and Methods: Among commercially available scintillators, $LaBr_3(Ce)$ scintillators have so far shown the highest energy resolution when detecting and identifying gamma-rays. However, the intrinsic background of this scintillator type affects efficient application to the environment with a relatively low count rate. An algorithm to subtract the intrinsic background was consequently developed, and the in situ calibration factor at 1 m above ground level was calculated from Monte Carlo simulation in order to determine the radioactivity from the measured net count rate. Results and Discussion: The radioactivity of six natural radionuclides in the environment was evaluated from in situ gamma-ray spectrometry using an $LaBr_3(Ce)$ detector. The results were then compared with those of a portable high purity Ge (HPGe) detector with in situ object counting system (ISOCS) software at the same sites. In addition, the radioactive cesium in the ground of Jeju Island, South Korea, was determined with the same assumption of the source distribution between measurements using two detectors. Conclusion: Good agreement between both detectors was achieved in the in situ gamma-ray spectrometry of natural as well as artificial radionuclides in the ground. This means that an $LaBr_3(Ce)$ detector can produce reliable and stable results of radioactivity in the ground from the measured energy spectrum of incident gamma-rays at 1 m above the ground.

  • This paper has suggested a technique for measuring VSWR at 1.8 GHz band for various modulated signals. By using directional coupler the power of incident and reflected wave is measured, and in order to minimize the size and cost of the measuring circuit, a SPDT(Single Pole Double Throw) switch is adopted to realize the circuit with just one detector and one A/D(Analog to Digital) converter. MCU(Micro Control Unit) is used to calculate the voltage reflection coefficient and VSWR, and the measured VSWR error has improved by approximately 0.2 with applying a simple bubble sorting algorithm to reduce the measurement error, the MCU process time and load.

  • Radiography image detector produces digital images by collecting the charges from the incident x-ray photons and converting it to the voltage signals and then the digital signals. The fixed-pattern noise from the nonuinform amplifier gains in the employed multiple readout circuits. In order to correct the nonuniform gains, a gain-correction technique which is based on the gain map is conventionally used. Since the photon noise remains in the designed gain map, the noise contaminates the gain-corrected images. In this paper, experimental observations are conducted for filtering the remained noise in the gain map, and a filter optimization algorithm is proposed to efficiently remove the noise. For acquired x-ray images from detectors, the filtered gain maps are evaluated and it is shown that optimization algorithm can improve the filtering performance even for relatively strong fixed-pattern noises, which cannot be removed by a simple filter.

  • Every object over $O^{\circ}K$ emits radiant energy based on its own temperature. Uncooled thermal imaging system displays the detected incident radiant energy as an image by signal processing. Recently, the uncooled thermal imaging system is applied to various areas such as medical, industrial, and military applications. Also, several researches are in progress to find new applications of the uncooled thermal imaging system. In this paper, we present effective method for controlling TEC-less detector in the uncooled thermal imaging system and also present the efficient control scheme for maximizing the accuracy of temperature measurement. The proposed scheme is to apply TEC-less and temperature detection algorithm in Uncooled thermal imaging system. In results of tests performed by using the actual chamber, we acquired images of better quality than the former system and temperature measurement accuracy was improved to less than $1^{\circ}C$.

  • Among the sensors mainly used for displacement measurement, there are a linear CCD(Charge Coupled Device) and a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) as a non-contact type. Their structures are different very much, which means that the signal processing of both sensors should be applied in the different ways. Most of the displacement measurement systems to get the 3-D shape profile of an object using a linear CCD are a computer-based system. It means that all of algorithms and mathematical operations are performed through a computer program to measure the displacement. However, in this paper, the developed system has microprocessor and other digital components that make the system measure the displacement of an object without a computer. The thing different from the previous system is that AVR microprocessor and FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) technology, and a comparator is used to play the role of an A/D(Analog to Digital) converter. Furthermore, an ATC(Automatic Threshold Control) algorithm is applied to find the highest pixel data that has the real displacement information. According to the size of the light circle incident on the surface of the CCD, the threshold value to remove the noise and useless data is changed by the operation of AVR microprocessor. The total system consists of FPGA, AVR microprocessor, and the comparator. The developed system has the improvement and shows the better performance than the system not using the ATC algorithm for displacement measurement.
