This study is focused on the characterization of an effective hydraulic conductivity in each hydrogeologic unit assumed as an equivalent continuum medium in the granitic area. Four boreholes of 3" diameter were installed and a Multi-packer system was facilitated in the selected borehole. Various in-situ tests including the fracture logging, constant injection and fall-off tests, slug and pulse tests were carried out. A hydrogeologic unit was defined into the upper and lower zones based on the variation of fracture properties and hydraulic conductivities. The difference of the result obtained by the various hydraulic tests and the effective characterization techniques on rock mass permeability are also discussed. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the upper unit was measured by two times(5.27E-10 m/s~7.57E-10 m/s) that of the lower unit(2.45E-10 m/s~6.81E-10 m/s)through the constant injection and fall-off tests.
As the groundwater flows along the fractures of crystalline rocks, it will be in contact with the fracture walls mostly coated by secondary minerals which are quite different form those of host rocks. The presence of fracture-filling minerals in crystalline rocks is important on the view point of radioactive waste disposal because of their great surface reactivity. The Surichi drill hole of 200 m in depth in the Yugu area composed mainly of Precambrian gneiss was selected to study the formation process of clay minerals on the fracture wall of gneiss, and their relation with present groundwater. The water-rock interaction in fractures resulted in the formation of gibbsite and clay minerals. They are formed by two different processes : (1) Incongruent dissolution of feldspar by groundwater diffused from a fracture path into rock matrix produced smectite and illite in situ, (2) on the wall of fracture, gibbsite, kaolinite, smectite and illite are formed by precipitation of dissolved species in groundwater. They show the paragenetic sequence such as gibbsite${\leftrightarrow}$kaolinite${\leftrightarrow}$smectite or illite. The paragenetic sequence of fracture-filling minerals was controlled by increase of pH of groundwater, decrease of fracture permeability by precipitation of fillings, and immobility of alkali or alkaline earths in groundwater. The groundwater from the Surichi borehole is a $Na-HCO_{3}$ type with pH range of 8.6-9.2. The sodium and bicarbonate in groundwater would be supplied by the dissolution of albite and calcite, respectively. The saturation index of groundwater and surface water calculated by WATEQ4F indicates that gibbsite and kaolinite are under precipitation to equilibrium state, and that smectite and illite are under equilibrium to redissolution environment. The stability relation of clay minerals in the $Na_{2}O-Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$ system shows that kaolinite is stable for all waters.
The microstructural features and mechanical behavior of directionally solidified $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fibers after extended beat treatment in oxidizing environment were investigated. The fiber was grown continuously by an Edge-defined Film-fed Growth (EFG) technique. The microstructure was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). The microstructure of the fiber in the as-fabricated state consists of highly oriented colonv and fine lamellar microstructure along the fiber axis. Tensile strength of the $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber remained unchanged with heat treatment at temperatures between $1200^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$ up to 300h. The weibulls modulus remained fairly constant after extended thermal exposure. The fracture toughness and crack propagation behavior were investigated. The fracture toughness ($K_{1C}$) of the $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber in the as-fabricated state were measured to be 3.6 ${\pm}$ 0.5 MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ by an indentation technique and 2.2 ${\pm}$ 0.2 MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ by assuming elliptical flaw of a semi-infinite solid, respectively. The $(Y_2O_3)ZrO_2/Al_2O_3$ eutectic fiber showed a radial (Palmqvist) crack type and exhibited an orthotropic crack growth behavior under 100 g load.

The development and maintenance of a sound bond are essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified. A standard or a verified bond strength measurement method is required at field for screening, selecting materials and quality control for overlay or repair materials, but no test method has been adopted as a standard. In this study, a concrete pull off bond strength measurement method for field application is proposed and evaluated. This study compares the splitting tensile test, slant shear test, nipple pipe direct tensile test, flexural adhesion test, briquette tensile test, jumbo nail pull-out test and core pull-off test with their test procedures. From these comparison and investigation, core pull-off test is selected as a main topic of this study because of it's suitability for in situ testing, simplicities in field application and clearness at interface boundary condition. Thus, the proposed core pull off test is evaluated to be the most appropriate method for field application in a simple manner. The fracture surface and fracture mode could be easily determined by visual observation of failure surface of the field specimen. The core pull off test was found to be sensitive to surface condition and latex contents at latex modified concrete.
The effect of thermal annealing on the in-situ growth characteristics of intermetallics (IMCs) and the mechanical strength of Cu pillar/Sn-3.5Ag microbumps are systematically investigated. The $Cu_6Sn_5$ phase formed at the Cu/solder interface right after bonding and grew with increased annealing time, while the $Cu_3Sn$ phase formed at the $Cu/Cu_6Sn_5$ interface and grew with increased annealing time. IMC growth followed a linear relationship with the square root of the annealing time due to a diffusion-controlled mechanism. The shear strength measured by the die shear test monotonically increased with annealing time. It then changed the slope with further annealing, which correlated with the change in fracture modes from ductile to brittle at a critical transition time. This is ascribed not only to the increasing thickness of brittle IMCs but also to the decreasing thickness of the solder, as there exists a critical annealing time for a fracture mode transition in our thin solder-capped Cu pillar microbump structures.

In order to establish the in-situ application of the artificial storage and recovery (ASR) technology which is used the property of the aquifer storage of groundwater. We carried out to the in-situ experiments such as borehole TV logging, pumping test and artificial hydraulic fracturing in volcanic island, Ulleungdo. In-situ experiments were conducted to divide the before- and after-hydraulic fracturing. Pumping test was achieved to confirm the two fracture zones, GL-13m and GL-21m, which are determined by the borehole TV logging. From the results of the before- and after-pumping tests, the hydraulic connectivity was confirmed to locate at GL-13m in the residual deposit zone of pumice media as alluvium. However, in the bedrock tone at GL-21m the hydraulic connectivity could be considered to faulty. Consequently, in this study area the artificial recharge has a little unsatisfied to geo-structural condition and desired to more detail investigation works.

Underground urbanization appears to be a promising solution in response to the shortage of construction sites in the above-ground space. In this context, an accurate evaluation of a construction site ensures the long-term performance of geosystems. This study characterizes potential sites for complex plants built in underground space using geophysical methods (i.e., seismic refraction exploration and electrical resistivity survey) and in situ tests (i.e., standard penetration tests (SPTs) and downhole tests). SPTs are conducted in nine boreholes BH-1-BH-9 to estimate the groundwater level and vertical distribution of geological structures. The seismic refraction method enables us to obtain the elastic wave velocity and thickness of each soil layer for each cross-sectional area. An electrical resistivity survey conducted using the dipole array method provides the electrical resistivity profiles of the cross-sectional area. Data obtained using geophysical techniques are used to assess the classification of the soil layer and bedrock, particularly the fracture zone. This study suggests that geotechnical information using in situ tests and geophysical methods are useful references to design an underground complex plant construction.
A definite shut-in pressure in hydraulic fracturing techniques is needed for obtaining the correct information on the in-situ stress regimes in rock masses. The relation between the behaviour of hydraulically induced fractures and the condition of remote stress is considered to be major reasons of an ambiguous shut-in pressure in hydraulic fracturing pressure-time history curves. This paper describes the results of a series of numerical analyses carried out using UDEC(Universal Distinct Element Code, Itasca), which is based on the discrete element method, to compare several methods for determining the shut-in pressure during hydraulic fracturing. The fully coupling of hydraulic and mechanical analysis was applied, and the effects of four different discontinuity geometries in numerical modelling have been investigated for this purpose. The effects of different remote stress regimes and different physical properties on hydraulic fracture propagation have been also analyzed. Several methods for obtaining shut-in pressure from the ambiguous shut-in curves have been applied to all the numerical models. The graphical intersection methods, such as (P vs. t) method, (P vs. log(t)) method, (log(P) vs. log(t)) method, give smaller values of the shut-in pressure than the statistical method, (dP/dt vs. P). Care should be taken in selecting a method for shut-in pressure, because there can be existed a stress anomaly around the wellbore and fracturing from the wellbore by a constant flow rate may have a more complicate mechanism.
Ground vibration generated repeatedly in blasting tunnel excavation sites is known to be one of the major hazards induced by blasting operations. Various studies have been conducted to minimize these hazards, both theoretical and empirical methods using electronic detonator, the deck charge method, the center-cut method among others Among these various existing methods for controlling the ground vibration, in this study, we investigated the cut method. In particular, we analyzed and compared the V-cut method, which is commonly used in tunnel blasting, to the double-drilled parallel method, which has recently been introduced in tunnel excavation site. To understand the rock fragmentation efficiency as well as the ground vibration controllability of the two methods, we performed in-situ field blasting tests with both cut methods at a tunnel excavation site. Additionally, numerical analysis by FLAC3D has been executed for a better understanding of fracture propagation pattern and ground vibration generation by each cut method. Ground vibration levels, by PPVs measured in field blasting tests and PPVs estimated in numerical simulations, showed a lower value in the double-drilled parallel compared with the V-cut method, although the exact values are quite different in field measurement and numerical estimation.
In this study we carried out the in situ test in order to explore the grouting effects of fracture zone on mechanical properties and permeability in tunnel. After consolidation grouting the rock mass averaged 2.30 in the modulus of deformation and 2.49 in the modulus of elasticity. The results obtained through this study are as follows. (1) With advance of the injection steps, the total cement take shows uniformity of the rock mass. (2) After consolidation grouting the improvement of permeability can be identified by reduction of Lugeon values. (3) Grouting injection can improve deformability and strength of rock mass. (4) More mechanical improvement appears for more deformable rock mass before grouting injection.
