  • The Pressurized water reactor owners group (PWROG) developed and applied a risk-informed in-service inspection (RI-ISI) program, as an alternative to the existing ASME Section XI' sampling inspection method. The RI-ISI programs enhance overall safety by focusing inspections of piping at high safety significance (HSS) locations where failure mechanisms are likely to be present. Additionally, the RI-ISI program can reduce nondestructive evaluation (NDE) exams, man-rem exposure for inspectors, and inspection time, among other benefits. The RI-ISI method of in-service piping inspection was applied to 3 units (KSNPs: Korea standard nuclear power plants) and is being deployed to the other units. In this paper, the results of RI-ISI for a Framatome type (France CPI) nuclear power plant are presented. It was concluded that application of RI-ISI to the plant could enhance and maintain plant safety, as well as provide the benefits of greater reliability.

  • In each country, the periodic ISI(In-Service Inspection) is required by the law to protect the public health and property from the potential accident of the nuclear facilities. To support the implementation of ISI program, the prescriptive ISI technical standards have been established. As the key parts of the ISI program, the non-destructive examination techniques are widely used to identify the degree of degradation of the pressure boundary components and welds. Recently, the risk informed-ISI program has been developed and implemented in several countries. Nonetheless, the existing ISI program which prescriptively decides the scope of inspection still has its own significance. In this article, the technical standards of ISI in leading countries like US, france, Canada, and Japan are reviewed and compared with the safety guide by IAEA. An outline to revise the domestic technical standards of ISI has been suggested.

  • The integrity of components and piping of operating nuclear power plants has been identified by in-service inspection(ISI) requirements and activities commensurate with standards and codes such as KEPIC MI or ASME Code Section XI. However, the other various degradation mechanisms not considered during design stage of nuclear power plants have been checked by enhanced ISI. The requirements of enhanced ISI have been voluntarily developed by the industry itself or strickly issued by regulatory body. Even though the requirements were developed by the industry, they should be reviewed by regulatory body for their application in nuclear power plants. The enhanced ISI activities and requirements of non-destructive examination(NDE) which reflect the degradation issues in nuclear power industry will be primarily discussed in this paper.

  • The importance and role of pre-/in-service inspection(PSI/ISI) for nuclear power plant(NPP) components are intimately related to plant design, safety, reliability, operation, etc. In this paper, for an effective and efficient management of large amounts of PSI/ISI data in NPPs, an intelligent database program(WS-IDPIN) for PSI/ISI data management of NPP was developed. WS-IDPIN program enables the prompt extraction of previously conducted PSI/ISI conditions and results so that the time-consuming data management, painstaking data processing and analysis in the past are avoided. Furthermore, development of ISI UT auto flaw evaluation and acceptance module based on ASME Code Sec. XI were presented. This module can be used for any angle beam examination from flat plate to spherical shapes as selected by the proper azimuthal angle. This program can be further developed as a unique PSI/ISI data management expert system.

  • In a previous paper, we have discussed the intelligent Windows 95-based data management program(IDPIN) which was developed for effective and efficient management of large amounts of pre-/in-service inspection(PSI/ISI) data of Kori nuclear power plants. The IDPIN program enables the prompt extraction of previously conducted PSI/ISI conditions and results so that the time-consuming data management, painstaking data processing and analysis of the past are avoided. In this study, the intelligent Windows based data management program(WS-IDPIN) has been developed as an effective data management of PSI/ISI data for the Wolsong nuclear power plants. The WS-IDPIN program includes the modules of comprehensive management and analysis of PSI/ISI results, statistical reliability assessment program of PSI/ISI results(depth and length sizing performance etc), standardization of UT report form and computerization of UT results. In addition, the program can be further developed as a unique PSI/ISI data management expert system which can be part of the PSI/ISI total support system for Korean nuclear power plants.

  • As the computer and computer graphic technology have been progressed, the virtual reality(VR) technology has been issued. The most important objective for VR system is to provide a reality to the user. Therefore, it is necessary to satisfy the perception of human. In recent years, more effective VR system has been studied and developed by many people. In this paper, the Information System of User Location(ISUL) is proposed. ISUL is used to improve a process of In-Service Inspection work. ULBIS provides a high degree of efficiency for In-Service Inspection process and makes inspectors get information about ISI exam report in web environment. In addition, ISUL provides a navigation, Isometric drawing reference viewer and Web-based ISI Database Reference System in web environment.

  • The design concepts of in-service inspection and maintenance are very important for the reactor system design of the nuclear power plant. The strategy of in-service inspection and maintenance should be reflected in the mechanical system design for the verification of the operability of liquid metal reactor KALIMER. In this paper the fundamental approaches of the in-service inspection and maintenance of the KALIMER are established to ensure the safety and reliability of the reactor system. The general method and requirement of the in-service inspection and maintenance for the reactor system and components are proposed and described to satisfy the intents of the ASME Section XI Division 3 and the design characteristics of KALIMER.

  • Ultrasonic microscope has been used to detect the defects on surface or inner solid. Conventionally, it has used at a single operating frequency. The resolution and quality of the measured images are determined by a characteristic of the transducer of the ultrasonic microscope. The conventional ultrasonic microscope has been used envelope detector to detect the amplitude of reflected signal, but the changes in amplitude is not sensitive enough for specimen with microstructure that in phase. In this paper, we have studied multi-frequency depth resolution enhancement with ultrasonic reflection microscope for the reflectors of a stainless steel reference specimen and a reference calibration block to be used as the material in nuclear power plants for ISI, PSI. Increased depth resolution can be obtained by taking two, three-dimensional images at more that one frequency and numerically combining the results. As results of the experiment, we could get enhanced images with the rate of contrast in proportion and high quality signal distribution for the image to the changing rate of depth for the reflectors of the two kinds of specimens.
