  • The SAR evaluation system with 9 stationary probes inserted into the object to be surveyed can calculate area SAR value based on the 9 measured electric field data. The results can be acquired in a few seconds by converting obtained area SAR to the volume SAR. The system can be very useful tool in the stages of handset development for mobile communication as well as in the handset production line because of its rapid SAR measurement ability. The validity of the measurement system is checked by showing that the measured SAR values agree well with reference SAR values suggested in the reference documents.

  • SqueeSAR is a new technique to combine Persistent Scatterer (PS) and Distributed Scatterer (DS) for deformation monitoring. Although many PSs are available in urban areas, SqueeSAR analysis can be beneficial to increase the PS density in not only natural targets but also smooth surfaces in urban environment. The height of each targets is generally required to remove topographic phase in interferometric SAR processing. The result of PSInSAR analysis to use PS only is not affected by DEM resolution because the height error of initial input DEM at each PSs is precisely compensated in PS processing chain. On the contrary, SqueeSAR can be affected by DEM resolution and precision since it includes spatial average filtering for DS targets to increase a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study we observe the effect of DEM resolution on deformation measurement by PSInSAR and SqueeSAR. With ALOS-1 PALSAR L-band data, acquired over Daejeon city, Korea, two different DEM data are used in InSAR processing for comparison: 1 m LIDAR DEM and SRTM 1-arc (~30 m) DEM. As expected the results of PSInSAR analysis show almost same results independently of the kind of DEM, while the results of SqueeSAR analysis show the improvement in quality of the time-series in case of 1-m LIDAR DSM. The density of InSAR measurement points was also improved about five times more than the PSInSAR analysis.

  • Successive Approximation Register (SAR) Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) seem to become the hottest ADC architecture during the past decade in implementing energy-efficient high performance ADCs. In this overview, we will review what kind of circuit techniques and architectural advances have contributed to place the SAR ADC architecture at its current position, beginning from a single SAR ADC and moving to various hybrid architectures. At the end of this overview, a recently reported compact and high-speed SAR-Flash ADC is introduced as one design example of SAR-based hybrid ADC architecture.

  • In this paper, the technical trends of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) were studied by investigating the journals and conference associated with the advanced technology of SAR. SAR has been first demonstrated in 1950. The main objective of SAR development is to overcome the limitations of real aperture radars. From 1950, many new concepts and technologies for SAR system is suggested and realized by many international researchers and engineers. New concepts for future SAR systems represented in the recent conference have been rearranged and analyzed.

  • A C-band ground-based rotational SAR system is presented in this paper. The rotaional SAR system is a test-bed for future rotational SAR systems which can be deployed in space and on a tower. The test-bed system is designed for imaging the electromagnetic scattering from earth surfaces and buried targets. This paper also presents the examination results of the generated SAR images. This rotational SAR system is basically consisted of the network-analyzer based HPS(Hongik Polarimetric Scatterometer) and a horizontally rotating arm. Several SAR images were obtained using the rotational SAR system for various target areas. To verify this system, we simulated the SAR images for the rotational SAR using the FDTD algorithm and compared between the measured and simulated SAR images. The rotational SAR system is operated at the center frequency of 5 GHz and various frequency bandwidth within 0.5~2 GHz to change the resolution of SAR images.

  • As SAR data have the strong point that is not influenced by weather or light amount compared with optical sensor data, they have high usfulness as temporary analysis fast and can be collected in case of like disaster. This study is to extract DEM from L-band data of JERS-1 SAR imagery using InSAR and DInSAR processing techniques. The accuracies of DEM extracted from the SAR data were evaluated by employing DEM derived from the digital topographic maps of 1:5000 scale as standard data.

  • This paper is made to suggest a future strategy for the Korean High Resolution Wide Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (HRWS SAR) satellite development by surveying the current trends for the SAR satellite technologies. From the survey, the latest SAR technology trends are revealed of using Digital Beam-Forming (DBF), SCan-On-Receive (SCORE), Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA), interferometry, and polarimetry for exploiting the SAR imagery. Based on the latest SAR technology trends and the foreign HRWS SAR development cases, the strategy for the future HRWS Korean SAR satellite development is suggested to develop the DPCA and SCORE technologies by using the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-6 (KOMPSAT-6) which is going to launch in a few years, and consequently to develop the HRWS SAR satellites which can monitor the whole Earth at weekly intervals.

  • In this paper, we propose SAR reduction methods based on power conservation relation, After defining SRF(SAR Reduction Factor) for a more quantitative discussion of effective SAR reduction methods, many kinds of simulation have been performed. We compare the SAR by a flip type handset with that of folder type one. It is found that in a typical position of handsets over a human head, the SAR when using the folder type is about 30 % smaller than that when using the flip type. The effects of ferrite material when using flip type handset are shown to be not considerable when using a folder type.

  • Interferometry SAR (InSAR) is a technique to generate topographic map from complex data pairs observed by antennas at different locations. However, to obtain topographic information using InSAR is difficult task because it requires series of complicated process including phase unwrapping and precise recovery of the SAR geometry. Especially, accuracy of the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) produced by repeat pass single SAR pair could be influenced by atmospheric effect. Recently, a new InSAR technique to improve accuracy of DEM has been introduced that utilizes low resolution DEM with a number of SAR image pairs. The coarse DEM plays an important role in reducing phase unwrapping error caused by layover and satellite orbit error. In this study, we implemented DInSAR (Differential InSAR) method which combines low resolution DEMs and ERS tandem pair images. GTOPO30 DEM with 1km resolution, SRTM-3 DEM with 100m resolution, and DEM with 10m resolution derived from 1:25,000 digital vector map were used to investigate feasibility of DInSAR. The accuracy of the DEMs generated both by InSAR and DInSAR was evaluated.

  • SAR data can be achieved independently of weather conditions or sun illumination which is main limitation of electro-optical sensor to get image. The information from imagery can be more enlarged using Shh data be-cause SAR data offers different information from electro-optical sensor. SAR data contains various distortions caused by the radar specification and geometric properties of data acquisition. These distortions should be removed to get the information with acceptable accuracy. In this study, we aimed to correct the radiometric distortion in Shh image caused by the geometric property of the object. For this purpose, we simulated the SAR image by modelling of the power of return beam which is variable according to the geometric configuration between SAR antenna and ground object. Dividing the SAR image by the simulation image, then, we can get the radiometrically corrected image. As a result of this study, we could minimize the effect of radiometric distortion in achieving some qualitative information from SAR image for the related field, such as Geospatial Information System.
