Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) nanocomposites were prepared with a novel method utilizing a macroazoinitiator (MAI). To induce the intergallery polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), the MAI containing a po1y(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment was intercalated between the lamellae of Na-MMT and swelled with water to enhance the diffusion of MMA into the gallery. The structure of the nanocomposite was examined using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and the thermal properties were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. The PMMA/Na-MMT nanocomposite prepared by intergallery polymerization showed a distinct enhancement of its thermal properties; an approximately $30^{\circ}C$ increase in its glass transition temperature and an $80\sim100^{\circ}C$ increase in its thermal decomposition temperature for a $10\%$ weight loss.
Polypyrrole (PPy)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of MWCNTs templates to improve the ammonia gas sensing properties. PPy morphologies, formed on the surface of MWCNTs, were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stabilities of the PPy/MWCNTs composites were improved as the content of MWCNTs increased due to the higher thermal stability of the MWCNTs. PPy/MWCNTs composites showed synergistic effects in improving the ammonia gas sensing properties, attributed to the combination of efficient electron transfer between PPy/MWCNTs composites and ammonia gas, and the reproducible electrical resistance variation on PPy during the gas sensing process.
An electrolyte supported SOFC cell was tested at $800^{\circ}C$ in air for 3600 h with an applied current density of $200\;mA/cm^2$ to examine possible cathode degradation issues. A scandium- stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) with additional manganese doping (ScSZ: Mn) was used as electrolyte. A strontium and copper-doped lanthanum ferrite (LaSrCuFe) and platinum were used as cathode and quasi-anode material, respectively. The DC resistance was logged over the complete testing period. Additionally, impedance spectroscopy was used from time to time to track changes of the cell in-situ. Post-test analysis of the cell using methods like scanning electron microscopy imaging and other electrochemical testing methods allow the identification of different degradation sources. The results indicate a promising combination of electrolyte and cathode material in terms of chemical compatibility and electrical performance.
The TiB2-reinforced iron matrix nanocomposite (Fe-TiB2) was in-situ fabricated from titanium hydride (TiH2) and iron boride (FeB) powders by a simple and cost-effective process that combines the mechanical activation (MA) and a subsequent heat treatment (HT). Effect of milling factors and synthesized temperatures on the formation of the nanocomposite were presented and discussed. A differential thermal analyser (DSC-TG) was employed for examination of thermal behavior of MAed powders. Phases of the nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The morphologies and microstructure of nanocomposite were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Phase composition and distribution were analyzed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Results showed that TiB2 particles formed in nanoscale were uniformly distributed in alloyed Fe matrix.

In the citrate reduction method of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) synthesis, pH of the reaction mixture can have a considerable impact on the size and size distribution of AuNPs. In this work, effects of pH variation upon the size and its distribution were examined systematically. As the initial pH was change from 5.5 to 10.5, it showed an optimal pH around 7.5. At this pH, both of the size and the size distribution showed their minimum values, which was verified by transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. This occurrence of optimal pH was discussed with the results of in situ monitoring pH during the reaction of AuNP synthesis.
We report on the growth, structural and transport properties of zinc-blende CrAs/GaAs/MnAs/GaAs multilayers on GaAs(001) substrates. Structural analyses using in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and exsitu cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy confirmed the realization of a zinc-blende crystal structure. Room temperature Hall measurements reveal that the as-grown multilayer exhibits p-type conductivity with a very low resistivity of $0.052\;\omega{cm}$, a high carrier concentration of $6.2X10^{19}\;cm^{-3}$ and a Hall mobility of $1.8\;cm^2/Vs$. We also observed a clear decrease of the resistivity in samples after low temperature annealing.
The vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method, where the "liquid" catalytic droplets collecting atoms from vapor precursors build the solid crystal layers via supersaturation, is a ubiquitous technique to synthesize 1-dimensional nanoscale materials. However, the lack of fundamental understanding of chemical information governing the process inhibits the rational route to the structural programming. By combining the in situ or operando IR spectroscopy with post-growth high resolution electron microscopy, we show the strong correlation between the surface chemical species concentration and nanowire structures. More specifically, the critical role of surface adsorbed hydrogen, generated from the decomposition of Si2H6 precursor on the interplay between nanowire / kinking and the defect propagation is demonstrated. Our results show that adsorbed hydrogen atoms are responsible for selecting -oriented growth and indicate that a twin boundary imparts structural coherence. The twin boundary, only continuous at / kinks, reduces the symmetry of the trijunction and limits the number of degenerate directions available to the nanowire. These findings constitute a general approach for rationally engineering kinking superstructures and also provide important insight into the role of surface chemical bonding during VLS synthesis.
The tension behavior of Nicalon/CAS glass-ceramic matrix composites was investigated. Infrared (IR) thermography was employed for two different types of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites, i.e., cross-ply and unidirectional specimens. During tensile testing, an IR camera was used for in-situ monitoring of progressive damages of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ samples. The IR camera provided the temperature changes during tensile testing. Microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to investigate the fracture mechanisms of $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites. In this investigation, the thermographic NDE technique was used to facilitate a better understanding of the fracture mechanisms of the $Nicalon^{TM}/CAS$ composites during tensile testing.
Carbon-silica membranes were Prepared by Pyrolyzing polyimide/silica composite obtained from ill-situ polymerization of alkoxy silanes via sol-gel reaction. In this study, effects of silica content and silica network in polyimide matrix were focused on the gas permeation and separation properties of the final carbon-silica membrane. The membranes prepared were characterized with a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), a solid state $^{29}$ Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^{29}$ Si-NMR), an electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gas permeation tests.
