  • The effects of microbial iron reduction and oxidation on the immobilization and mobilization of copper were investigated in a high concentration of sulfate with synthesized Fe(III) minerals and red earth soils rich in amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides. Batch microcosm experiments showed that red earth soil inoculated with subsurface sediments had a faster Fe(III) bioreduction rate than pure amorphous Fe(III) minerals and resulted in quicker immobilization of Cu in the aqueous fraction. Coinciding with the decrease of aqueous Cu, $SO_4{^{2-}}$ in the inoculated red earth soil decreased acutely after incubation. The shift in the microbial community composite in the inoculated soil was analyzed through denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Results revealed the potential cooperative effect of microbial Fe(III) reduction and sulfate reduction on copper immobilization. After exposure to air for 144 h, more than 50% of the immobilized Cu was remobilized from the anaerobic matrices; aqueous sulfate increased significantly. Sequential extraction analysis demonstrated that the organic matter/sulfide-bound Cu increased by 52% after anaerobic incubation relative to the abiotic treatment but decreased by 32% after oxidation, indicating the generation and oxidation of Cu-sulfide coprecipitates in the inoculated red earth soil. These findings suggest that the immobilization of copper could be enhanced by mediating microbial Fe(III) reduction with sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions. The findings have an important implication for bioremediation in Cu-contaminated and Fe-rich soils, especially in acid-mine-drainage-affected sites.

  • To find out the antero-posterior morphology of the upper face in Angle's class III malocclusion patients, 90 patients, adults in Heilman's Dental age, were used as samples and following results were obtained after the relative comparision of antero-posterior relationship of upper facial structures between Angle's class I malocclusion patients and Angle's class III malocclusion patients and of antero-posterior size of upper facial structures to horizontal and vertical structures in each patients. 1. After comparison of the distance from PMV line to anterior margin of maxillary sinus and cheek, which determines the antero-posterior position of the upper face, upper face in Angle's class III patients are underdeveloped relative to Angle's class I patients. The distance between orbitale and anterior margin of maxillary sinus were greater in Angle's class I patients, whic implies thart the upper face in Angle's class III are depressed. 2. Antero-posterior dimension of anterior cranial base from PMV line and vertical dimension of upper face are statistically insignificant between two groups. After comparing antero-posterior position of upper face to anterior cranial base, the upper face in Angle's class Et patients are depressed antero-posteriorly in relation to anterior cranial base. Following the comparision of antero-posterior position of upper face in relation to vertical dimension of upper face, the upper face in Angle's class III patients seem to be narrow antero-posteriorly

  • [ $MnO_2$ ]-Coated Sand(MCS) was prepared with variation of coating temperature, coating time, and dosage of initial Fe(III) with two kinds of sands such as Joomoonjin and quartz sand. An optimum condition for the preparation MCS was determined from the coating efficiency as well as the oxidation efficiency of As(III). Coating efficiency of Mn was strongly dependent on the coating temperature but quite similar over the investigated coating time, showing an increased coating efficiency at higher coating temperature. In contrast to coating efficiency, the oxidation efficiency of As(III) by MCS was severely reduced as increase of coaling temperature. By considering these results, an optimum coating temperature and time for the preparation of MCS was selected as $150^{\circ}C$ and 1-hr, respectively. Coating efficiency increased as the dosage of initial Mn(II) increased, while As(III) oxidation was maximum at 0.8 Mn(II) mol/kg sand. The solution pH was identified as an important parameter affecting stability of MCS, and dissolution of Mn from MCS increased as pH decreased. Oxidation rate of As(III) increased as the dosage of MCS increased as well as solution pH decreased.

  • Cell structure is based on proteins. Since the antibody is proteous substance, the continous low protein feeding decreases the resistance of host against pathogenic agents. The present study was designed to investigate the infectivity of protozoa to rats which were fed with variously prescribed diets. Experimental group was divided into 4 groups according to the level of casein in the diet, group I: casein 0%, group II: casein 5%, group III: casein 15%, group IV: casein 30%. Each animal was fed for 5 weeks followed by inoculation of protozoa in cecum and sacrified each 1 week later of the infection. Each diet group, non infected with protozoa was recognized as the control. Result are summerized as follows : 1. All the rats of group I died in 2∼4 weeks and 2 of 12 rats in group II were also died in the period. 2. The growth rate and FER were high in group III and IV compared with group II. Therefore low protein feeding decrease growth and feed efficaly ratio(FER). 3. The pH of caecal contents between the infected group and control showed no difference, but the values of group III and IV were higher than the group II. Low pH of the caecal contents provides a suitable condition for determining their susceptibility to Entameoeba histolytical trophozoite. 4. Amounts of serum total protein in group II, III and IV showed no significant difference with the control and infected group, but amounts in group III and IV were higher than the group II. Therefore, continuous low protein feeding decrease serum total protein. 5. Albumin, ${\alpha}$1, gloulin, ${\alpha}$2 globulin, ${\beta}$ globulin, ${\gamma}$ gloulin of group III and IV were all high to compare than the group II. Albumins of group III and IV of control was higher than infected group, but there was no difference in ${\gamma}$ globulin between the infected and control group.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the location and the shape of the mandibular lingula in skeletal class I and III patients using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography. Materials and Methods: The sample group included 190 skeletal class I patients and 157 class III patients. The location of the lingula in relation to the deepest point of the coronoid notch was classified into 3 types using panoramic radiographs. The shapes of the lingulae were classified into nodular, triangular, truncated, or assimilated types using cone-beam computed tomographic images. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: The tips of the lingulae were at the same level as the coronoid notch in 75.3% of skeletal class I patients and above the coronoid notch in 66.6% of class III patients. The positions of the lingulae in relation to the deepest point of the coronoid notch showed statistically significant differences between class I and class III patients. The most common shape was nodular, and the least common was the assimilated shape. Although this trend was not statistically significant, the triangular shape was more frequently observed in class III patients than in class I patients. Conclusion: The locations and the shapes of the mandibular lingulae were variable. Most of the lingulae were at the same level as the coronoid notch in skeletal class I patients and above the coronoid notch in skeletal class III patients. The nodular and assimilated-shaped lingulae were the most and the least prevalent, respectively.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine health status and mini nutritional assessment (MNA) according to self-esteem status of elderly in care hospital. The survey was carried out from $13^{th}$ to $31^{st}$ of September, 2014 in five care hospitals. Analysis was performed for 226 subjects. Evaluation criteria included demographics, clinical status, MNA, health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) and self-esteem. The SE I, SE II and SE III groups were divided by self-esteem scores. Data were analyzed one-way ANOVA, Duncan' multiple range test and Pearson's correlation using SPSS 15.0. Education level, religion, dental condition and medical endurance type were significantly different in all groups. Many elderly people were normal BMI ($20.94{\sim}21.67kg/m^2$). Self-esteem significantly increased in order of SE I, SE II and SE III. Mobility, usual activity and anxiety or depression were significantly different in all groups, and EQ-5D of SE II and SE III groups were significantly higher than that of SE I group. Comparison of MNA screening score in elderly patients was as follows : Score for food intake, psychological stress or acute disease, neuropsychological problems, pressure scores or skin ulcer, protein intake, mode of feeding, nutritional status and health status in SE I group were significantly lower than those of SE II and SE III groups. Mobility and drug intake of SE I group were significantly lower than those of SE III groups. Fruit and vegetable intake SE I group were significantly higher than those of SE II and SE III groups. MIS (Malnutrition Indicator Score) was significantly different among the SE I, SE II and SE III groups. We conclude that self-esteem score is positively correlated with protein intake, nutrition status, health status and MIS in elderly care hospital. To improve nutritional status of elderly in care hospitals, systematic nutrition management and self-esteem education program should be implemented.

  • To investigate the relationship between the calcification stages of mandibular canines and the skeletal maturity stage of the hand-wrist in subjects with normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion, hand-wrist radiographs and panoramic radiographs were taken from subjects of normal occlusions(94 males, 88 females) and Class III malocclusions(75 males, 76 females) who had no systemic diseases and no history of orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment. Fishman's method for the skeletal maturity stages of the hand-wrist and Demirijian's method for the calcification stages of mandibular canines were used and analyzed. The results were as follows : 1. In subjects with normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion, skeletal maturity of the hand-wrist and calcification of mandibular canines at various ages occured earlier in females than in males(p<0.05). 2. Comparing the skeletal maturity stages of the hand-wrist and the calcification stages of mandibular canines between subjects with normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion, there were no significant differences between the groups. 3. The correlation coefficient between the calcification stages of mandibular canines and the skeletal maturity stages of the hand-wrist. in subjects with normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion showed a high association(p<0.01). 4. In stage 4 of the skeletal maturity of the hand-wrist, the frequency distribution of calcification G stage among the various calcification stages was highest both in normal occlusion and in subjects with Class III malocclusion. However, there was no significant difference in the frequency distribution of calcification stages between the groups.

  • Objective: To evaluate the differences in maxillomandibular transverse measurements at either the crown or the estimated center of resistance (CR), and to compare values between normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion groups. Methods: Dental casts and computed tomography (CT) data from 30 individuals with normal occlusion and 30 with skeletal Class III malocclusions were evaluated. Using the casts, dental arch widths (DAWs) were measured from the cusp tips, and basal arch widths (BAWs-cast) were measured as the distance between the points at the mucogingival junction adjacent to the respective cusp tips. The BAWs determined from CT (BAWs-CT) images were measured from the estimated CRs of the teeth. Results: None of the DAW measurements or maxillomandibular DAW differences showed statistically significant intergroup differences. In contrast, the maxillary BAWs-CT and BAWs-cast were lesser in the Class III malocclusion group than in the normal occlusion group. The mandibular BAWs-CT were significantly greater in the Class III malocclusion group than in the normal occlusion group. Moreover, the maxillomandibular BAW differences on both CT and cast showed significant intergroup differences in all transverse measurements. Conclusions: The maxillomandibular DAW differences showed no significant intergroup differences. In contrast, the maxillomandibular BAW differences on both CT and cast showed significant intergroup differences in all transverse measurements. The maxillomandibular BAW differences at the estimated CRs, measured using CT or casts, can reveal underlying transverse maxillary basal arch deficiencies in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusions.
